Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, 2 person romantic getaway

Clarance Gonstead Guest Cottage was built for the world renowned chiropractor in 1952 by Architect, Herb Fritz Jr. in the Prairie Style of architecture made popular by Herb's Mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. The cottage is centrally located in town on two acres and separated from the main house. The exterior is clad in clay tile and lanon stone and the interior finishes are stone and tide water cypress walls with quarry tile and carpet floors.

The hilly local terrain, abandoned level rail road trails and off road trails in the state park provide opportunity for all levels of biking enthusiasts. Mount Horeb has an 18 hole golf course, public pool and almost weekly organized events within walking distance. The radiant floor heating system and the proximity to down hill and cross country trails make an ideal winter retreat, unfortunately we have had to fall in line with all the other inns and discontinue use of the wood burning fireplace to satisfy insurance restrictions so we installed a 4K television with a sound bar that provides the visual and auditory ambience of a variety of wood burning fire places and the floor provides the heat. You also have the flexibility of watching a movie on an internet TV.

About Joyce Wall

I am a retired Architect and my wife is a retired 4th grade public school teacher and we are both on to our second and third retirement jobs.

Joyce Wall purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Joyce Wall chose Wisconsin

We purchased the property because of the mature landscape and to prevent the landmark with it's historical connection to both Frank Lloyd Wright and Clarence Gonstead, from becoming 6 lots in a planned subdivision.

My wife walked across the street through the baseball diamond to work and I worked out of my home office for years so it was a good fit while raising kids.

What makes this cottage unique

Winter sunrise through the large sheets of glass, casts shadows on the field dressed lanon stone walls and reflects a warm tone off the low cypress ceilings. The radiantly heated floor and Music served up from an Ipod and played though the vintage stereo together with convenient proximity to down hill, cross country, skating and snow shoeing makes it a great romantic getaway for more energetic guests.

In the summer, the well placed mature landscaping provides cool shade and the thermal mass provides natural air conditioning so you can enjoy the interior environment or relax in a hammock under the filtered light of a mountain ash.

The proximity to Main Street and the Bike trail means that you can leave your car parked in the driveway to enjoy the Quaint downtown and traditional residential urban planning of the old town where sidewalks are not interrupted by driveways and garages are on the alley. Downtown is now home to the Duluth Trading Company and numerous art galleries with both traditional and European choices in dining. Locally brewed beers and wines offer more reasons to extend your stay.

Terrific cottage with iconic style

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a wonderful find - an opportunity of a lifetime for those who love Frank Lloyd Wright style. Joyce and Phil are such gracious hosts, providing helpful information about sight seeing, restaurants, and they even have bikes to use. There are cute restaurants and shops only a 10 minute walk away, and a fantastic bike trail. The home has every comfort you need, including a well appointed kitchen. Staying here was the highlight of our trip.

Perfect for our Stay

  • 5 of 5

We picked this area to visit so that, among other things, we could visit Taliesin. What better place to stay, than the Gonstead Guest Cottage! Designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright! Our hosts, Phil and Joyce saw to it that we had everything we needed, answered all our questions and provided complete privacy while still being available if help was needed. Mt. Horeb is a wonderful town. Very clean, safe and friendly with lots of restaurants and fun shops. Wineries and distilleries are also plentiful in the area. Fall color was just getting started and was beautiful.

A hidden treasure

  • 5 of 5

What an incredible stay! We cannot day enough about the amazing hospitality and amenities. The joy Phil and Joyce have in sharing their beautiful cottage is unmatched to anywhere else we’ve ever stayed. The architecture is second to none.

We were able to adventure to nearby Madison and get the fill of the city and come back in the evenings to a quiet and cozy space.

The only thing I’d change is that we would have stayed longer.

Going here will be a decision you never regret. The experience of a lifetime.

Living the Dream

  • 5 of 5

We once toured Wright's Taliesin, enjoyed it and wondered what it would be like to live there. Gonstead, designed by a Wright trained architect, provides that opportunity. The use of stone, wood and light in the apartment brings delight, peace and serenity to one's senses. It allows you to step back from the world, take a breath, and relax. It intensifies feelings and wonder that a Taliesin tour merely stirred. Joyce and Phil were gracious hosts. They have truly undertaken a labor of love and we who stay at Gonstead benefit. We regret that we used the apartment too much as a base for our outings instead of enjoying the property more. Although three days was not long enough, any longer would have made it difficult to go back to an ordinary, uninspired home. Thank you for making a place like this available.
