Nestled in the hills that extend from the Chianti towards the Arno river valley, on the border between the provinces of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, lies Il Colombaio, a characteristic and charming old farmhouse surrounded by silvery-green olive groves.
The property is composed of three buildings: the farmhouse, the hayloft and the stable.
The farmhouse is partly inhabited by Andrea and Marina; it has an independent apartment on the ground floor, while the hayloft and the stable have been trasformed into two small houses. The buildings are surrounded by an olive grove and an extensive lawn where the swimming pool is located, in an isolated and panoramic position.
Il Colombaio offers you the chance to enjoy the everyday pleasures of life in Tuscany, the beauty of the Tuscan countryside and its authentic rhythms, as well as being the ideal starting point for exploring this region.
Whether you want to visit the popular sights in Tuscany, or to hike or bike amidst the hills of Chianti and the Crete Senesi, at the end of a busy day you can find the warm feeling of coming home and relax.
Each apartment is independent and has a private garden, equipped with table, chairs and sun chairs. Because your privacy is our priority, and we want you to feel right at your own home.
Il Colombaio is the ideal place for those who love ciclying: Andrea is an amateur cyclist, he knows all the routes in this part of Tuscany, and is always willing to provide help and suggestions and, on request, guided tours.
The famous vintage cycling event “L’Eroica” takes place in Gaiole in Chianti, just 12 km from here, the first weekend of October, during the traditional grape harvest.
About INTERNET - Please be advised that here, as well as in most of the Italian rural areas, the Internet connection may be slower than expected, and the data allowance is limited. This means that you can use Internet for browsing, e-mailing, voice calling, but you'll have to give up live streaming, up/downloading large files, online gaming and video calling. If these activities are your priority, we suggest you to search for an accommodation that ensures a reliable and unlimited connection (cities and towns are generally better served than rural locations).
Please understand that the quality of the internet connection does not depend on us: we share with our guests the same service that the Companies give us. As always happens, rural areas are left behind by technological advancements but, on the other hand, it is precisely this "slow time" that makes the Tuscan countryside so appealing as a holiday destination.
You can find more info on our web site: www.il-colombaio.it
We are a family of 3: Andrea, Marina and our daughter.
Marina purchased this chateau / country house in 2003
We think this is an ideal place to live. Cavriglia is surrounded by the most beautiful places in Tuscany: Chianti, Crete Senesi, the cities of Florence, Siena and Arezzo, just to mention the closest ones; at the same time Cavriglia is an “authentic” village, because it is only lightly touched by the tourist routes.
Our property combines privacy and comfort, the typical atmosphere of the old Tuscan farmhouses and the quality of being at hand. We are always happy to welcome guests who choose to stay in our region and help them, if they want, get the most from their holiday. Many travelers don’t venture outside the major destinations. For this reason, they sometimes go back home thinking that Tuscany is a mostly touristy destination with lots of tourists everywhere. Quite to the contrary. If you are ready to venture off the beaten path and see more than what you find in guidebooks, you will go home with a completely different image of this amazing region, certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
An absolutely fabulous find! What would we do without Holiday Rentals? We had a lovely week enjoying the peaceful, beautiful location. Il Fienile is a great little place full of rustic charm: every thing we needed to relax. Thanks to Marina for being a great host. Will certainly recommend this to friends and look forward to returning (Kev and Dawn,UK).
While we have been to Italy before, this was our first visit to Tuscany. We felt as if we were at our own private villa: the combination of daily sunny skies, the wine and food, the many excursions and coming “home” to il Colombaio these past two weeks have made this our “best vacation ever”. You can be certain that we will return (Ralph and Maggie, Canada).
It would be difficult to imagine a better centre for exploring the beautiful Tuscan scenery. Add to that the charm of the house and Marina’s and Andrea’s welcome and you have an ideal holiday location. (Andrew and Carol, France).
The il colombaie spot was a quaint authentic building in a beautiful area around Tuscany. Our spot was clean and a perfect size for 3 or 4 people. The pool is a wonderful addition and the town of Cavriglia is very close and has all you need.
Marina was very accommodating to many changes in our schedule. She was helpful and also let us feel very private. The house has all you need but recommend to bring essentials like shampoo, dish soap etc if you are coming for a longer stay.
We were very happy there and would recommend and return to this spot again.
We had a most fabulous time at the farmhouse for 9 days. The views are amazing and you can take advantage of walking around there. If up to it, you can walk down to Cavriglia (the little town down the hill). Montevarchi, the nearest town is quite nice for shopping for food. We walked up the hill to the old church above and were surprised to see the little zoo with peacocks!!! The location is so central...Arezzo is the capital of old towns and within a 45 min drive, you can visit dozens of medieval towns. Of course, Siena and Florence are a must. We went down to the lake which was also very nice. The wine, the food and the vistas were all breathtaking. We miss it already. And thanks Marina for your kind hospitality. We will definitely be there again. Cheers, Daisy and Peter
We loved this place and hope to go back. It's in an absolutely beautiful, peaceful location, surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, quaint villages, ancient ruins, and all of the delightful things you might imagine about Tuscany. The stone cottage in which we stayed was homey, comfortable, and clean. The owners live on the property and were kind and helpful about providing directions and recommendations, and Marina spoke very good English. I especially enjoyed that the owners' two cats came to visit me daily and sat outside with me. There are many nearby villages and we had delightful times driving around and exploring them. It's also a wonderful place for taking walks through the countryside, into the nearby village, or up the road to the Roman ruins. We highly recommend it. The photos on the website accurately depict the place.
We had a very relaxing 4 days stay at the cottage. The location is great, though a car is definitely necessary. The nearby village of Cavriglia has a small but well equipped supermarket and a few restaurants (we dined at il Cenacolo and found the food to be of excellent quality and great value for money). The chianti wine region is practically on the doorstep and there are many possibilities for tasting sessions. All in all a great place!
We have just stayed at Il Colombaio for 2 weeks in the height of the summer, and we indeed had very hot temperatures especially at night (34 degrees). It was a great gateaway from our British summer and thoroughly enjoyed it. We drove all the way from England and made our journey part of the adventure. Once arrived at Il Colombaio, a little heaven amidst the Chianti hills, we knew we had arrived at a very cosy place. The apartment has all the basic requirements (lack of microwave or toaster but not essential for our stay).
We visited Siena, Arezzo, Florence, Cortona and the Chianti villages around but made the most of the swimming pool too! Be aware of the mosquitoes and come prepared with lots of repellent of all sorts.
We will consider coming back to Il Colombaio one day hopefully!
The farmhouse we stayed in was beautifully renovated and comfortable. The location in a rural setting on a hilltop in Tuscany is excellent. The swimming pool was also very nice.
Il Colombaio is located in the surroudings of Cavriglia, a small town at the gates of the Chianti, in the historic heart of Tuscany, equally distant from the cities of Florence, Siena and Arezzo which are approximately 40 km away. The property lies on the side of the hill that descends from Montaio to Cavriglia; Montaio is an ancient hamlet, where you can enjoy the panorama of the entire valley. Although Il Colombaio is located in the open country, it is only 1,5 km far from Cavriglia, 20 minutes walking. In Cavriglia you find coffee bars, restaurants, food shops, laundromat, bank and chemist.
Both the towns of Montevarchi and San Giovanni Valdarno are only 8 km away: here are railway stations and every kind of shops, stores and services, including the open-air market every Thursday morning, in Montevarchi, and every Saturday morning in San Giovanni.
The easy access to the motorway A1/E 35 Milan-Florence-Rome (the Valdarno exit is only at 13 km) allows you to reach numerous interesting spots within a short time, both in Tuscany and Umbria, while few kilometers south of Cavriglia you enter the suggestive territory of the Crete Senesi.
The point of reference for all cycling enthusiasts is "Tuscany Bicycle" in Gaiole in Chianti, 12 km away, where you can rent both modern and vintage bicycles.
