Torquay:

Torquay's waterfront is the focus of life in the town. Here you'll find the palm-lined promenade, seafront gardens, a lively harbour and an international marina. The new Living Coasts attraction adds to the variety of the new waterfront and the illuminated bridge is a great backdrop to a relaxing evening drink. Yet within minutes of Torquay town centre there are beautiful beaches easily accessible by foot, road or sea.

There is an abundance of pavement cafes, Torquay pubs, Torquay restaurants and nightlife in Torquay, good quality shops and a host of attractions to suit every interest.

The English Riviera is a resort in the truest sense of the word, attracting visitors of all ages and interests throughout the year. Undergoing a water front regeneration and a number of new attractions in Torquay and accommodation schemes, Torquay has something for everyone and for all ages, at all times of the year.

Torquay has been one of the UK 's top holiday destinations since Victorian Times when the gentry promenaded, bathing huts were wheeled down to the beaches and anyone who was anyone had an attractive villa overlooking the sea.

It was the Victorians who first used the English Riviera name to describe their favourite resort and their legacy remains to this day with sparkling white villas perched on the verdant hilltops, beautiful gardens around the seafront and elegant Victorian facades along the main streets.

Don't be fooled by the Victorian ancestry however, Torquay is also a vibrant and forward thinking resort attracting visitors of all interests, from Art and Culture afficionados to marine enthusiasts.

Torquay's famous seven hills provide the backdrop to a waterfront scene that matches anything you'll find on the French Riviera.

There are 22 miles of coastline, cliffs, coves and beaches and walks to rival any in the South West of England, with a climate that belongs somewhere much further south. There are opportunities for surfing, safe swimming, diving, sailing, angling and wonderful opportunities to study the natural wildlife at your leisure

Stunning views are to be seen just about every where across Torbay, out over the English Channel, along the 40 miles of Lyme Bay to Portland Bill or inland towards the Ten Tors Dartmoor. Torquay is an ideal base from which to visit Dartmouth, Totnes, Exeter and Plymouth, all of which are only a few miles distant.

Along the 22 miles of English Riviera coastline are 19 beaches and coves. Some, close to Torquay town centre are wide, open stretches of sand with beach facilities such as cafes, beach huts and watersports. Many are smaller and more secluded.

Several of our beaches hold coveted awards for cleanliness and water quality. Torbay is a naturally sheltered bay, creating a safe haven for ships of all shapes and sizes in stormy weather. Occasional easterly winds create our own winter storms however and this is when beachcombers make their best finds. Keep an eye on the Torquay weather page.

Stretching from the South side of Brixham to Maidencombe, the coast path around the Bay offers excellent and varied walking, with circular walks or point-to-point, with spectacular sea views and an exotic range of flora and fauna.

Torquay is a place to relax, to soak up the atmosphere, to take in the scenery, in Torquay parks and gardens to enjoy the experience of a Torquay holiday in a classical English seaside resort, at all times of the year.

There is a good choice of activities in Torquay to choose from and there is a complete range of accommodation in Torquay to suit every taste and budget. Torquay nightlife has a rich variety of evening entertainment provided throughout the Bay, all year round.

South Devon:

South Devon has a coastline of spectacular rugged cliffs and headlands, interspersed with lower-lying areas, sandy beaches and the five distinctive river estuaries of the Dart, Avon, Yealm, Erme and Salcombe.

The coastal scenery also includes reed beds, sand dunes, shingle ridges, mud flats, salt marshes, and the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. This variety provides habitat for a diverse range of wildlife. The South West Coast Path National Trail running along the whole stretch of heritage coast, provides access to spectacular scenery, long views across bays and the English Channel, interesting beaches, and a scattering of coastal villages & historic towns such as Salcombe & Dartmouth.

Review by Sandra from Surrey: "Beautiful apartment, spotlessly clean, in wonderful surroundings!"

Golf:

There are several Golf Clubs in the area, the nearest one being Torquay Golf Club, Petitor Road, St Marychurch,Torquay, Devon TQ1 4QF = 2.5miles.

Torquay Golf Club is an extremely popular venue for visitors and societies alike - due to the excellent service and friendly welcome provided. It is a delightful parkland course with stunning views over Lyme Bay to the east and Dartmoor to the west.

Torquay makes a great short break for Golfers in both summer and winter. When many other courses are snowbound or unplayable the clement Torbay weather ensures that a full 18 holes can be completed!

Other Golf Clubs nearby include:

Churston Golf Club, Dartmouth Road, Churston Ferrers, Brixham TQ5 0LA = 6 miles.

Churston Golf Club’s biggest asset is the course itself. Not only is the 18 holes laid out and presented in a fashion that is always pleasing on the eye, Mother Nature has ensured that the sub strata of shillet and shale are perfect for golf course drainage. This excellent drainage allows for play 365 days a year and the warm climate means the surfaces of the greens are in tip top condition 12 months of the year unlike so many other courses.

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club, Blackawton, Dartmouth, Totnes, Devon TQ9 7DE = 19.5miles.

Golf just doesn’t come any better! -

Designed by Jeremy Pern, Dartmouth Golf & Country Club offers 2 exceptional golf courses, both created with sweeping fairways, ample all year round tees, and of course superb greens created from the dramatic surrounding landscape, all built to USGA Championship specification.

Newton Abbot Golf Club, Stover, Newton Abbot, TQ12 6QQ = 11.2miles.

The Course Designed and influenced by James Braid (5 Times British Open Champion)

The peace and tranquility of Stover Golf Club, located on the edge of Newton Abbot is a convenient treat for golfers in the south west, with easy access from the A38 and M5. The course is one of the best parkland courses in the south west. The beautiful parkland golf course features a wide variety of holes, elevation change, mature trees, streams and picturesque ponds.

Our 18 hole 5959 yards course off the back tees consists of two loops of nine holes which both come back to the clubhouse. The course design was influenced by '5 times British Open Champion - James Braid' and provides easy walking, narrow tree lined fairways but contains subtly contoured greens that present a fair but challenging test of golf for all enthusiasts.
