About Vicky Swain

I am English/Portuguese. I have been living in Portugal most of my life.

I love to hike.

Favourate places- Kashmir, Atlas mountains and Sintra mountains in Portugal. My passions are travel and hospitality, the Opera, good books, and chocolate :)

Vicky Swain purchased this villa in 1996

Why Vicky Swain chose Costa do Estoril - Cascais area

I fell in love with Cascais as a child while visiting family and purchased this home in 1996. Cascais is a slower pace than Lisbon, yet only 30 minutes away on the train. I love the fact that the house is 10 minutes walk in to town, yet has a lovely garden and pool space with good privacy.

What makes this villa unique

I love the windows in this home. Casa Catarina has sun shine all day streaming in. I chose this house as the street is quiet being a one way street. The house is situated in the center away from the road. I fell in love with the arched ivy entrance over the gate ways, which gives you a cottage feel. All my guests have commented on the comfort and feel good atmosphere of Casa Catarina. So far lots of Happy guests, and I look forward to greeting many more. See you soon! x Vicky .

Exceeded all expectations

Our party of four have just returned from 9 days in this beautiful property. It is a wonderful house, light, airy and spacious. The garden and the pool are even more beautiful than the pictures depict and there are seating areas both in the shade and the sun. Vicky and her husband are wonderful hosts, warm, friendly and helpful. The house is wonderfully well equipped, with every convenience (and then some) provided. It is lovely and cool at night and sunny and bright during the day. We surprised ourselves by eating at home on a few evenings, purely because the kitchen is so well equipped and if you don't feel like going out, there are some good TV stations and DVDs to watch also. The house was spotlessly clean upon arrival, and we immediately felt at home. In fact we never really wanted to leave! There are plenty of relaxing areas for your party to split up, so you never feel like you're on top of each other. The nearest supermarket, pharmacy and fruit and veg shop are only a few minutes walk away. It's a very pleasant 10 minute walk to Cascais itself, and taxis are plentiful at night for coming home, rarely costing more than €4 or €5. To add to all of that, we had wonderful weather for mid-late September, with no humidity and a little cool in the evenings which we loved. We would all have no hesitation in recommending this property. The reviews which encouraged us to rent it were correct in every sense and we would echo all the positive comments. Thanks again for everything Vicky!

A beautiful home for a relaxing vacation

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes pictures and descriptions can be misleading, but not in this case! All images are most accurate and describe this beautiful, generous and unpretentious place very well - with the exception of the living room, which is actually quite a bit larger than the photos suggest.

As a party of 6, spreading from teenager to grand parents, not only did we need space, but also extra privacy - and we found Casa Catarina to be perfectly suited. The beautiful garden is large and sunny, and the pool was used a lot from everyone.

The kitchen is straight forward and easy to use, and well enough equipped for some serious cooking, which is mandantory in a place such as this, given the fantastically fresh fish that can be bought in local shops or in the market hall. We had breakfast and dinner in the garden or in the house, depending on the temperature (and the amount of sunburn) - and the wind. This needs to be mentioned, because unlike our previous stays in this area, the wind could be bothersome. According to Vicky, this was due to the strange climatic conditions we've been plagued with throughout spring.

Sleeping was a revelation too, with comfortable beds, lots of fresh air and very little noise. There are some dogs in the neighbourhood that communicate frome time to time, but not more so than elsewhere in town, and at dawn the birds get busy too. What is completely absent is traffic noise, because the house is located in a dead end road. It is also very well insulated, both thermally and acousticly, so everyone could custom tailor his preferred setting to his liking.

Since this particular part of Portugal has so much to offer, every day was different. Yet we didn't even get close to see everything. You could easily spend a week or two in Lisbon alone! My tip would be not to overdo it on the first day, as the city is quite tiring (and simply too beautiful to do things in a rush).

Cascais itself is very pretty and lively and offers bars and restaurants for all tastes. The beaches north of Cascais (small ones) and south of Lisbon (huge) are all worth visiting, and countryside around Sintra is simply fantastic. Park Pena, located in the hills of Sintra, is a magic place, even more so than the Palace itself, and definetely worth a visit. Get there early, and the crowds aren't too bad!

Last but not least, Vicky is a very warm, charming and helpful host, around when needed and easily accessible via phone.

Higly recommended!

Lovely house - great host.

  • 5 of 5

Our Villa was spotless and beautifully decorated. One double bedroom downstairs, and two doubles upstairs. The 3rd upstairs bedroom was more suited to 1 person. The villa was cool throughout the day - regardless of what the temperature was like outside.

All the facilities: TV, Internet, Hot Water etc all worked perfectly. The pool isn't heated, but the kids loved it. The rooftop dining area was also popular - especially for breakfast. Supermarkets are no more than 10 mins walk away.

Our host was fantastic - she couldnt have done more for us, and often went above and beyond.

A lovely house with very supportive owner

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week here on a family holiday over Easter. Our first impressions of the house was that it was clean, airy and spacious and really well presented. The kitchen (and fridge) were large. The garden was a great sun trap, with an elevated terrace allowing us to stay in the sun for longer. The pool was nice but it is cold at this time of year!

Vicky was an excellent and friendly owner and support: very quick to reply to our questions and dealing with our minor issues, even down to providing a portable radiator to supplement the heating on the cold nights. Lots of good advice too on where to go so worth asking about what you like to do.

The house itself is on a no-through road but with easy access. It is only ten minutes walk up from the train and bus stations, a large supermarket and the edge of the town centre. It is a steady climb back but if you are loaded with shopping taxis are very cheap. A smaller supermarket is close by too.

We did not have a car for this holiday but didn't need one. Cascais has a free bike service although you have to be early or lucky to get them. We used Scooter na Linha in town for better bikes to do our longer rides along the coast and into the hills - cheap and great service. The trains are good for Lisbon and Belem, and buses run to Sintra, although for a family a taxi is faster and nearly the same price. Cascais itself offers good beaches and coastline walks, so all in all it is easy to spend a great week here. And have a fantastic base to return to.

Recreative, cosy and hearty

  • 5 of 5

Hello friends of Portugal/Cascais

although our stay in Casa Catarina was only one week, it was a fabulous time. From the first moment we contacted Vici, she was like a friend who did everything that we could enjoy our time in Cascais. Everything she has discribed at her homeaway page is the truth: The furniture of the house is hearty and cosy, we loved to cook and grill fishes, had breakfast too at the terrace mostly for hours. We were three couples that‘s why we were happy for separate bathrooms and enough space where we could retire!

Vici is an uncomplicated und open-hearted woman who was always helpfull when we need informationen, tipps and organizational support.

After hours of exploring Cascais and serveral sightseeing hotspots, the garden was our relaxing zone per excellence. We were the lucky one who could enjoy the flowers of May and the weather because the warmth was pleasant to all of us.

Don’t hesitate to contact her, because the house is fanatstic for families and couples. It is close to Lissabon and in less than 45 Min. you are in the city center by train.

Many thanks for the wonderfull stay in your Casa Catarina, Vici! We will contact you for the next holidays, hopefully for a longer time.

All the best for you.

Martin, Steffi, Corinne, Michael, Andi and me

One of the best holidays ever!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this house because it looked so inviting, more like a home than a holiday rent, we were not disappointed. Vicky welcomed us warmly and continued to be a great source of information about the local area and Lisbon throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble. The house and garden were a haven of peace after a hot days on the beach or sight seeing. The position of the house is perfect, out of the bustle of Cascais but within an easy walk so we didn't always have to drive. We are a family of 6 people all with different agendas but this holiday kept us all happy. Wonderful!!!
