Warm, well-equipped house in lovely location, beautifully presented

  • 5 of 5

Spent 7 nights here in February as two families of 4. House is in the lovely village of Shaldon. Well located on the coast. Good pub, restaurants, shops, and chippy nearby. House lovely and warm, well done out with classy decor and very well equipped. James made sure we knew where to go and how operate everything. Very attentive indeed, inlcuding coffe and cake on arrival. If you're looking to stay on the coast give Hawks Cay a look.

Fabulous place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Hawks cay is a lovely, clean, comfortable and well equipped holiday rental. Everything is of a high quality and clearly a lot of thought has been given to the interior design. It is a fabulous place to stay and certainly enhanced our holiday experience.

Location

The Shaldon ‘to do list’ include a visit to the family-friendly Shaldon Zoo, Shaldon Cliffs Pitch & Putt. It is an easily accessible location for enjoying coastal walks, classic beach days, scenic picnics or a thrilling day out on the water with a boat/kayak rental, water sports and sailing. The passenger ferry takes visitors across the estuary to Teignmouth. Guests can explore more of the South Devon coast, by hopping on the Teignmouth Circular (operated by the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company). A host of other attractions also await guests enjoyment, including botanical gardens, the lively appeal of Torquay and a treasure trove of National Trust sites.

Shaldon is very well connected, with road links, close proximity to Exeter Airport and easy access to the mainline train stations in Teignmouth and Newton Abbot.

Shaldon:

Shaldon has a very close but welcoming community. A tightly woven fabric of small backstreet with lots of small cottages, it remains one of the best kept secrets in Devon. House prices actually reflect this however.

It is quintessentially English especially when you see the locals playing bowls on the small central village green. You could even think the Spanish Armada may be appearing off the Ness at any moment! The green, as you would expect is overlooked by the local pub and each Wednesday in the season there is a local gift market, the 1785 day! People dress up in Georgian costume and there are often entertainers, including local musicians.

The green is central to the Village and leading off from this you can explore further inland (but not too far) or walk to the water edge where at low and mid tide you can walk down the estuary. The estuary stretches across to Teignmouth its larger neighbour and can be reached by Ferry from the beach! The main channel is relatively deep water which is why you will see the occasional larger industrial boat moving up of down the far channel under guidance of the Shaldon and Teignmouth Pilot.

In 1909 the ferry moved into the modern era and installed an engine. No more oars and when the tide is in flood you may imagine they were relieved when fuel replaced muscle! ! The boats have been traditionally painted black and white for 300 years and remain this way today! Records show that a ferry has been operating since the 13th century! That’s before the Pilgrim Fathers reached their new home!

Further Activities & Attractions Include:

Boat Rentals/Charters, Canoeing/Kayaking, Crazy Golf/Pitch & Putt, Exceptional Views, Gallery, Grocery Shopping Nearby, Museums, National Trust Properties, Playground, Public Transportation, Restaurants & Bars, Rowing Boats, Train Station, Waterfalls, Winery Tours, Wildlife Centre and Zoo.

Golf:

Shaldon:

Shaldon Approach Golf, The Ness, Ness Drive, Shaldon, Teignmouth, Devon TQ14 0EY.

Shaldon Approach Golf is considered one of the best approach courses in the South West, with breathtaking views of Teignmouth and the Teign Estuary. Shaldon is an 18-hole course and has hole distances of 60 - 120 yards ( 7 holes over 100 yards).

Teignmouth:

Teignmouth Golf Club, Haldon Moor, Teignmouth, Devon. TQ14 9NY.

Teignmouth Golf Club is justifiably proud of its heritage. The course was designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1924, some 9 years before he completed his most famous work at the Augusta National, home of the US Masters.

Teignmouth’s course is situated near to the South Devon coast and, at 800 feet above sea level, it commands spectacular views of the sea and nearby moors.

The 18 hole moorland links presents a great test of golf for players of all abilities. Features include six varied and challenging par 3s and no fewer than 11 two-tier greens, a true MacKenzie trademark.
