Description

Photos and Description of this holiday cottage in Lascelles - Santiago-St.James

Spacious, arty One-Bedroom Bungalow In a Quiet and Safe Seaside Residential Area

Santiago-St.James is a fresh semi-detached cottage on a beach-side estate in historic Jamestown. The first European settlers in the island of Barbados chose this area in 1625 because of its sheltered beaches, abundant victualing and healthy, beautiful surroundings. Four hundred years later it's still Barbados' most sought after place to stay - and Santiago-St.James is right there !! Serene, secluded, safe, salubrious, central, spick-and-span Santiago (which is in fact the Spanish for Saint James) and is inspired by the saint's legendary search for a way to the sea.

The semi-detached cottage is offered to guests on a self-cater basis (i.e. no daily housekeeping visits) so you can 'live like a local' - in complete peaceful and private abandon as if you were at home. A gorgeous beach, a town full of amenities, supermarket, restaurants, cinemas, banks, public transport, shopping and night life - all withing reach of a pleasant stroll.

The way to see Barbados is by bus. Santiago has covered parking at the front door just in case guests decide to do their reconnoitering in a rented car, but most days are so fine that the car very often and it just sits at home.

Play golf? Can't get your handicap down from 40? Across the street from Santiago is a full size cricket playing field where you can recreate your swing or just your stride with a daily routine in the company of curious monkeys, graceful egrets and playful mongooses.

Swim for your life? Why not do it in the company of giant leatherback turtles along the mile and a half of coral sandy gentle shore line from Discovery all the way up to Glitter Bay. Stop paddling and have a Bank's (the beer of the gods) at one of the beach bars along the strip - perhaps watch the last over of a one-day international cricket match on their screen.

Are you fascinated by wildlife? Please don't invite the monkeys in for breakfast !! Santiago is on the edge of a virgin forest that provides accommodation for a variety of indigenous birds, plants, in-shore fish, giant leatherback turtles as well as some unusual four-legged species just hanging about - horses, black-belly sheep and our own green monkeys. One of the advantages we enjoy is that there are absolutely no poisonous or vicious creatures in Barbados, and certainly none around Jamestown. Mosquitos are a bit of a nuisance, but they can be easily kept at bay.

Shopping is your thing? Santiago lies practically in the shadow of the island's most exclusive duty free mall: Limegrove LifeStyle Centre. Here are all the chic shops on the sheet plus: cinemas, bistros, concerts, and late night bars where you can rub shoulders with the other celebrities enjoying their anonymity. Truly underspoken sophistication because everyone is sure everyone else is famous . . . but all at very reasonable prices.

How about a little climatotherapy? A change of scene to help you manage a condition that we might suffer from at home . . . Don't we all need it sometimes? Well we have pure vitamin D pouring out of the skies in the sun rays that bathe the open air sunning deck at Santiago. Bring a good book or your favourite meditation style and get better the natural way !!!

There will be WiFi, Kindle downloading and internet TV to keep you informed and well 'red', but there'll also be Margaret and Lee - your so to speak - 'landlords' living just next door, and these two eccentric retired land lovers are at your service to help you learn all the survival secrets in the colony !!

A few things Santiago doesn't offer and we apologetic if they are important to you: No unhealthy over-chlorinated plunge pool, and no smokey outdoor barbecue. Tanya's pop-up restaurant around the corner serves the most delicious grilled fish, and the tranquil west coast shore is undisputably the best olympic size swimming pool you could want !!

Our rents during the Summer (June to November) are about US$ 100.00 per night which includes all taxes and utility charges. No gimmicks or stunts at the 'shrine of Santiago' !! Winters are usually heavily booked up, but still try us . . . the rent goes to US$ 120.00 in that high season. We like to know who's coming so we'll ask you to share some information about yourselves and your expectations.

The best word we've heard to describe Barbados is: 'therapeutic' ! And you couldn't want a more affordable arrangement in order to enjoy the other delights of this gorgeous island !!

About Margaret and Lee Farnum-Badley

Margaret is a celebrated local decorator and Lee is a retired ukelele playing university tutor. Both Barbadian, but born in South America and both in our mid sixties. Our children Maia, Alan and William-Lee are grown and far flung with their respective professions, and occasionally invade us in the summer. We built Santiago originally with the intention of using it as 'granny apartment' and for use by friends and family on holiday - so it's quite nicely equipped and kept fresh and spotless. Our pastimes include awareness meditation, social work, golf, fitness, Caribbean cruising, fine dining, reading. We delight in the research of Barbados' extraordinary history and the culture of the era of exploration and cultural development of the region. But perhaps above all we enjoy the company of travellers, who with their own stories always excite our admiration Our guests at Santiago always bring us much pleasure.

We are inspired by the words of contemporary poet Leonard Cohen in this 'Anthem':

Ring the bells that still can ring!

Forget your perfect offering!

There is a crack in everything!

That’s how the light gets in!

Margaret and Lee Farnum-Badley purchased this cottage in 1982

Why Margaret and Lee Farnum-Badley chose Holetown

It was perfect as a fixer-upper for a professional couple. In fact it was quite fixed already. We just expanded on it. The locational advantages were and are simply incomparable !!

The Zac Brown Band has a song called 'Knee Deep' with lyrics that summarize the reason why we think you should be here too:

'Wishin' I was knee deep in the water somewhere

got the blue sky, breeze and it don't seem fair

the only worry in the world

is the tide gonna reach my chair

Sunrise, there's a fire in the sky

never been so happy - never felt so high

and I think I might've found me my own kind of

paradise'

What makes this cottage unique

The friendliness of Holetown, the amenities, the sea, the natural environment with its monkeys and egrets, the access, the safe streets and hiking trails - the whole atmosphere of Jamestown is so conducive to healthy therapeutic living that we said: 'This is definitely THE Way to live !!'

Guestbook comments from the owner

"More than a vacation in a charming and very comfortable cottage, Santiago offered us the way to find and enjoy a totally "Bajan" lifestyle in a safe, private, relaxed haven. We felt we were a welcome part of a great family of happy people. You owe yourself the delightful experience of letting yourself GO stay at Santia-GO !!! Thank you Margaret and Lee."

Lovely Property in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable stay in this very well equipped, comfortable and ideally located property. Margaret is the most gracious hostess and has literally thought of everything to make your stay enjoyable and clearly takes great care to ensure that guests have a trouble free time. The property is very clean with great comfortable large beds! The location in Holetown is excellent and close enough to all the local amenities which are all within walking distance. A five minute walk will take you to Settlers beach which is a lovely beach for swimming and relaxing, together with some nice walks. The bus stop is literally at the end of the road which will take you anywhere around the island. I cannot say enough good things about our hosts Margaret and Lee. We arrived as guests and left as friends. We look forward to hopefully returning again next year.

The pretty apartment in a very nice Caribbean house was neatly furnished and equipped with all you need for a pleasant stay. Outside we could relax on a small terrace with a well tended garden. The hosts are very friendly and courteous and we really felt in good hands.

It needed only a few minutes to the varied shopping possibilities of Holetown which is really an exclusive place to be. We found many nice little restaurants, beautiful and clean beaches with some areas for snorkeling and we enjoyed our stay at Santiago St. James very much.

Yes, well maintained and in prime location.

The apartment had all the necessary implements required (microwave, blow dryer, iron and ironing board) to name a few which made my stay very comfortable. The location was near to all the facilities (designer stores, grocery stores, restaurants and the sea). I also found the location to be very safe for at times, I would be returning to the apartment between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm and I did not fear walking in the street at those times.

While Santiago's location in relation to the numerous quaint amenities of Holetown is a plus, the town's historical character gives the area a special romantic character. We guarantee its location is unmatched for your enjoyment of the whole island because you'll have easy access to her places of interest as well as to the charm: climate, friendly people and natural beauty.

Margaret and I live next door and so you'll have our immediate response for any queries or assistance. Jamestown Park is a quiet residential subdivision of St.James within walking distance of the most beautiful beaches and the town centre. It is secure and private except for the monkeys that might violate your peace at daybreak when they chatter on the way to their favourite mango tree !! All windows are fitted with security bars and mosquito mesh and of course as mentioned, we'll be here to serve you should any emergency or nuisance arise.

Good Value is our aim, because we would like our guests to become members of a community of regular visitors that call Santiago their "Barbados home" !!!

Notes:
The island's West Coast and Holetown in particular has long been a popular resort for the rich and famous. Rubbing shoulders with international stars and celebrities at restaurants, nightclubs, beaches and - yes rumshops - is becoming something of a pastime. Barbados is unique because its lifestyle allows everyone to enjoy a vacation that features a complete anonymity and perhaps even suggests a 're-invention' of the self. The general practice is to let everyone be themselves and not attract attention to their fame. No paparazzi, no autograph hunters please . . . . everyone here is a celebrity !!!
