The heart of the barn is a large main room (12 x 5 metres) with sitting, dining and kitchen areas, which opens onto its own private large terrace with a table and chairs under a shady pergola. From the terrace there are views of the garden and pool and you can barbecue with lovely views of the sunset.
There are three bedrooms: a ground floor double bedroom with en-suite shower room and two further bedrooms upstairs (one double and one with two single beds) and a full bathroom. Two additional mattresses and a cot can be provided in the upstairs twin bedroom if required to accommodate more children. There is also a travel cot available.
The kitchen has a 4 burner hob, an electric oven and a microwave. It has a fridge-freezer and dishwasher and it is fully equipped with cooking pots and pans for everyday life rather than just as a holiday home.
Our house with attached converted barn, built of white stone, is situated in a small bastide village in the middle of the Gaillac wine region near Cordes sur Ciel (one of the most beautiful mediaeval villages in France and in 2014 voted the French Village of the Year).
The original house is attached to a converted barn and both can be rented together (6 bedrooms – up to 14 guests), or the Barn can be rented on its own (3 bedrooms – up to 8 guests). Please note: the property will not be let to two separate groups. A large group would have sole use of the whole property. A smaller group renting the barn would sometimes share the garden and pool with the owners.
There is a very spacious shaded terrace with large table and chairs for dining al fresco which provides a suitable spot for barbecues. This terrace overlooks the landscaped garden of 2500 sq. metres with grass, trees and shrubs, and a 12 x 5 metre pool (available from mid-May to mid-September) with umbrellas and chairs. There are swings and a slide. A second, covered terrace provides further outdoor space when the whole property is rented.
The property rented as a whole would be ideal for a large family or two or more families holidaying together as it provides two kitchens, two large sitting rooms, six bedrooms and a games room, giving plenty of living space and a large garden.
Both the house and the barn have been tastefully converted and equipped to a very high standard. The house and barn have been awarded a 4 star classification by the Tarn Tourist Board (Comité Départemental du Tourisme du Tarn) to accommodate 12 people. However, the twin room in the barn is large and so, if there are children in the group, we are able to accommodate up to 8 people if the barn is let on its own and up to 14 people for the property as a whole.
Between the house and the barn is a games room with table football and a small snooker / pool table. Each sitting room has a TV receiving French, UK and international satellite free-to-air channels, a DVD player and a basic hi-fi system. Wifi is available in most of the property. There is a reasonable selection of English-language books for most tastes and some games, music and DVDs.
The utility room has a washing machine, ironing boards and irons. There is a tumble-dryer in the garage, accessible from inside the house. Each side of the property has its own entrance and there is parking for at least 4 cars. There is an outside shower room and WC (only available in summer).
We enjoy spending time in this gorgeous house in South West France which now belongs to our children. When we are away we make the whole property available for rental and it is ideal for two or more families. When we are here we like to welcome guests to the Barn - an almost self-contained part of the property.
John is a retired university professor and has a keen interest in gardening, local history, cycling and walking. Sara is a retired clinical psychologist and enjoys reading, walking, swimming and cycling. We also enjoy spending time with our children and grandchildren in the UK.
John & Sara Turner purchased this house in 2004
There is a safety cover on the pool but parents must take full responsibility for the safety of their children at all times, especially in the pool and when using the swings and slide.
Glass and other breakables are not permitted in the pool area
Only use toilet paper suitable for septic tanks
The Barn should be left clean and tidy at the end of stay - requiring only normal "end of let" cleaning
Although we welcome groups of friends, we do not accept stag parties, hen parties or other events.
Only the number of people specified in the reservation may stay overnight at the property.
Very well equipped, spacious barn for a family of 5. Lovely heated pool which got lots of use and a spacious garden for playing boules. Spacious terrace for eating outside in the shade. Great tranquil location but only ten minutes from the lovely town of Cordes sur Ciel and half an hour from the great city of Albi.
A warm and helpful welcome from the owners who were available to answer queries.
The only improvement would be a couple of air conditioning units upstairs as it was rather hot to sleep even with the fans provided, although downstairs was lovely and cool.
Would recommend to friends and family, thank you.
This property is really excellent both for couples or a group seeking a very quite location - but near to the midi-pyrenees adtonishing sites - as well as for a family, due to the very large garden and playing ground. And the pool (which we didn't use because we were out most of the day.
You'll find a very small village, fully equipped house (everything presented in the site is there!) and very near treasures like Saint Antonin, Cordes, Albi, Najac and more.
Sara and John will do their best, just ask.
Really hope to return one of these days!
We had a lovely stay at this converted barn which is furnished as a 'home from home' throughout. Jon and Sara who were on site for part of our stay were helpful and friendly and have obviously thought carefully about how to make their place really welcoming.
The pool was the best we have found during our stays at other places in France and we had the added extra of fruit and vegetables from the garden. We would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
The property is 18km from Albi (UNESCO heritage site) with its amazing cathedral. It is close to Cordes-sur-Ciel, Gaillac, Castelnau de Montmiral, Cahuzac sur Vère and St Antonin Noble Val. The village of Cordes is very lively in the summer and has many outdoor cafés with splendid views, interesting museums and the unique 'Jardin des Paradis'. Cordes has just been declared the winner of the vote for the village preferred by most French people (2014).
There are well marked paths for walking. The local markets sell fresh produce and there are small supermarkets in Cordes and Cahuzac sur Vère and large ones in Albi and Gaillac. Numerous local vineyards, including one in the village itself, offer the chance to taste and buy a range of wines.
