About Chris Schoneveld
Chris is born and raised in The Hague, Netherlands. He studied geology (PhD) at Leyden University in the Netherlands and had a career with Shell until his retirement some years ago. He lived in many countries but decided that France would be the best place to live permanently. Chris is married to Anna, a French/Greek/Australian woman. Together they have a son called Alec. He is six years old and attends a French school. He is fully bilingual since we speak English at home. Soon he will be trilingual since he attends a bilingual (Spanish/French) school. Spanish is important since Eysus is only half an hour drive from th Spanish border.
Chris Schoneveld purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Chris Schoneveld chose Eysus
We first lived in the Provence for a number of years. However, after we discovered the Pyrenees with its beautiful lush nature and, importantly, the lack of wind (we grew tired of the dry landscape and the mistral in the Provence) it was not difficult to make the switch, especially after we found the water mill in the most idyllic location on the planet. We renovated the water mill for the last 7 years because it was hardly livable when we bought it. With a surface area of some 2200 ft2 is was a bit too big for the three of us. So we decided to share this beautiful place with other people and the idea of a gite was born.
What makes this Cottage unique

Unique property, tumble dryer much appreciated. Comfortable furnishings.
I can understand and agree with much of what Christopher N. write in his review in June 2019.
The gite is in a beautiful location and overall we enjoyed our stay.
We had two issues. Firstly as Christopher states in his review , there were no written instructions on how to use any of the appliances. We were unable to view the TV as the parental security lock was on and Chris the owner , was unable to supply the password or rectify the problem another way.
This was particularly annoying as we were unable to watch the Tour de France. We had experienced several earlier stages live and so viewing on TV was important to us.
The downstairs bedroom did have a moisture problem despite having a humidifier running continuously.
The bedding was fine, however the bathroom floor was constantly wet and the room smelt mouldy.
As Christopher states in his review (and we agree ),we cannot recommend this holiday property until the above issues are corrected.
Communication with owners was outstanding. Beds are super comfortable and the location is wonderfully quiet. Great rental for large family or 2 couples.
Great character but very poor presentation
This property has great character and some very positive aspects but overall we can only rate our stay as a '2 Star' experience.
The reason for this low rating is due to a number of issues concerning the presentation and care of the gite. During our stay and after leaving we raised a number of problems we encountered with the owner but these have not been satisfactorily resolved. The property owner was not in residence during our stay and it appeared to us that he took little interest in maintaining the gite to the advertised standard.
The major problems we experienced were to do with dampness of the bed in the downstairs bedroom which had a literally wet mattress and sheets.
It was clear that the gite had not been occupied for some time. The external appearance was very untidy and overgrown.
There were deficiencies in the kitchen equipment and linen (partly rectified after contact with owner) and no instructions on how to use the oven/grill or the satellite TV which was was only solved after some lengthy discussions and visit to the local satellite service company (e.g. the input channel was incorrectly marked 'PC').
The gite gives the appearance of an owner who has lost interest in this venture and we cannot recommend this holiday property unless the above issues are corrected.
Have rented in southern Europe for years. This was by far the most beautiful, comfortable and magical place we have ever stayed in.
We are very pleased that you have enjoyed your stay and we appreciate your positive review. Thank you very much.
Our stay at the moulin was fantastic!
It was the perfect central location to explore the Pyrenees and Basque areas. We enjoyed walking around Eysus and frequent trips into Oloron. Everything in the house worked perfectly. The stream provided many hours of enjoyment. We hope to be able to return soon. Thank you for sharing your home with us.
