About the property

Tropical Hideaway

Tropical Hideaway is a luxurious and very private property, consisting of five boutique style accommodations surrounded by vibrant and mature tropical gardens. Set in over 4 acres of pristine natural forest all accommodations offer private facilities to the highest of standards including beautiful verandas with views that will literally take your breath away. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious and luxuriously appointed and well laid out kitchens allow you the convenience of preparing your own meals and to dine Al Fresco style on your own private terrace.

Located in an elevated hillside position high above the famous Princess Margaret Beach and with an incredible panoramic vista overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Admiralty Bay and the surrounding forested hillsides, the views are absolutely stunning and will not disappoint.

Specializing in couples and small groups, Tropical Hideaway can accommodate from 2 to 12 guests in what many say are the finest accommodations on Bequia with the finest views on Bequia. All are available to rent either individually or as a collective group and our prices are always highly competitive.

We offer an informal, private and relaxed atmosphere and we pride ourselves with our genuine friendly service and the experience we afford our guests. With over two hundred five star reviews on various well known sites these verified reviews offer an insight into the attention to detail and location this ‘Tropical Hideaway’ has and reflect our genuine intention that guests arrive as guests and leave as friends.

Tropical Hideaway has an 18m (58') wide panoramic Infinity pool and is often quoted as being one of the top ten pools in the Caribbean. The Infinity pool is a stunning feature of the property and with the environmentally friendly solar heating, the pool can be enjoyed at all times of the year. Typically our daytime pool temperatures are around 33 deg C in summer and 29 deg C in Winter. That’s an amazing 94 deg F falling to a very inviting 84 deg F in winter. The extra 3 degrees C created by our solar heating can make an enormous difference to your enjoyment of the pool. There is a swim up sunken pool bar, complete with fridge, ice-maker and sink, a preparation and serving area and a generous supply of acrylic beverage glasses. Underwater coral seats are conveniently positioned around the submerged bar and this is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of your own personal wine or indulge in your favourite drink or snack. Adjoining the pool is a Gazebo complete with a large daybed and the views from here are just incredible. A perfect place to relax and read a book or simply enjoy the spectacular scenery. The pool deck is tiled using natural stone coral and provides a safe, non slip and cool surface to walk on. Sun loungers, parasols, sunbathing mats and various chairs provide ample seating and relaxation areas around the pool. The pool and pool deck are west facing and receive the sun for most of the day. A cooling Caribbean breeze is usually present and the Gazebo and large parasols provide areas of shade for the hottest part of the day.

As the evening sun slowly sets and you look out over the Caribbean Sea, you cannot fail to be impressed. Sunsets from here can be amazing with the elusive 'Green Flash' often being seen. The setting is simply perfect and with underwater pool lights and discreet Led lighting enhancing the evening ambiance, the special moment can continue long after the sun has set.

Tropical Hideaway has a large barbecue area and our licensed on-site shop allows guests to purchase an excellent selection of fish and meats just perfect for the barbecue. We also offer a wide range of quality wines, beers and spirits and for your convenience all these and much more are now available on site and all at local supermarket prices.

Please note the very large Infinity pool together with the Gazebo, pool patio and barbecue area are shared by any guests who are in residence at the time.

All our accommodations have the latest 40" flat screen internet TV's that give access to our in-house entertainment system supplying high definition films, TV, music and internet radio. High speed internet and Wi-Fi is supplied in all areas. Professional quality ceiling fans are positioned over all the beds and for those really hot days when the cooling Caribbean breeze has taken a rest, you can turn on the bedroom air conditioner until the breeze returns. All indoor living areas and bedrooms are fully screened allowing you the convenience of a mosquito free environment with the ambiance of outdoor living and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.

Princess Margaret Beach is the nicest beach on the Island. Pristine and uncrowded and a short 20 - 25 minute walk down the road. A few parts of the road are steep. Most people walk down to town, the restaurants or the beach and catch a taxi back. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. Some guests walk both ways and some guests hire a car for a few days to explore the Island. Princess Margaret Beach is ideal for children and adults alike. It is very safe with turquoise blue, warm, calm waters. The beach is stunning with lovely white powdery sand. There is a very nice restaurant on the beach and there are numerous other restaurants and bars on the island. Snorkelling is good on both points at either end of the beach.

The Bequia board-walk is now complete allowing you to walk from the beach at Lower Bay over a small headland onto the stunning Princess Margaret Beach. You can then walk over Princess Margaret Beach to the next headland which now has a spectacular board-walk suspended from the rock face. This connects to the Belmont Walkway, passing several bars, restaurants, the two local dive shops, various small shops and cafes and eventually leads into town.

Local 'Dollar' buses travel the main routes with cheap fares to match the name. Taxi's are cheap and plentiful and our 3 local taxi companies provide fixed fares around the Island. Example fares are around 7 US to Princess Margaret Beach or 9 US into town (up to 4 people). We also offer our very own car hire service from $35 US per day.

Tropical Hideaway has without doubt some of the finest rooms on Bequia, and coupled with the spectacular panoramic ocean views and the beautiful evening sunsets, you soon realize you are enjoying, what many say, are the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia.

Our desire is to fulfill your dream and on that basis we invite you to read our individual room offerings and discover which of our amazing boutique style accommodations you prefer the most. We know you will enjoy the experience.

About Martin and Julie Mansfield

We originally arrived in the Caribbean in 1996 after making a 3 week transatlantic crossing aboard our sailing yacht 'Rainbow Spirit'. This was the beginning of another adventure and after sailing and exploring the Caribbean Islands for 2 years we eventually bought a 2 acre plot of land on the Island of Bequia. Having already committed to a world circumnavigation, we set sail again in 1998, went through the Panama Canal and spent the next three years travelling around the world with our three daughters. Although we visited hundreds of white sand, sun-drenched tropical islands, we found none of them compared to the special beauty and charm of Bequia. We returned in 2001 and finally made a start on building our 'Tropical Hideaway'.

Building in the Caribbean was never going to be easy and after the frustrations of 2 years turning into 3 years and 3 years turning into 4 years we finally finished construction in 2011. Eight years of full time building and a cost overrun of around 300%. The project was huge, far bigger than we ever imagined, but our hard work, frustrations, pain and suffering eventually paid off and we now have a remarkable property often quoted as having 'the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia'.

Our daughters have now left to start their own lives and adventures, returning when time and funds allow. Our eldest daughter is now married and lives in New Zealand. Our middle daughter started the first Spa's and treatment centres on Bequia and is now employed by the rich and famous from all over the world. Our youngest daughter is currently working at a safari lodge in a remote part of Zambia and returns to Tropical Hideaway for the December to April season where she offers her spa treatments and therapy work. As you can see, our wanderlust lifestyle has left a lasting impression on our daughters and they are all enjoying an adventurous and exciting life as we have done.

Martin and Julie Mansfield purchased this house in 1998

Why Martin and Julie Mansfield chose Belmont

Bequia truly is a unique Island. Large enough to be interesting and exciting, yet small enough to retain its local charm and uniqueness that only a small off the beaten track Caribbean Island can offer. It truly is an undiscovered paradise that some well known travel journalists are only just discovering and several well known newspapers and magazines have recently published articles and all describe Bequia as an undiscovered paradise, about to be discovered.

What makes this house unique

Specializing in couples and small groups we offer an informal, private and relaxed atmosphere and we pride ourselves with our genuine friendly service and the experience we afford our guests.Tropical Hideaway has one of the finest hillside locations on Bequia and coupled with the incredible heated Infinity edge pool, the spectacular panoramic ocean views & the beautiful evening sunsets, you soon realize you are enjoying, what many say, are the finest views on Bequia, from the finest accommodation on Bequia. The views are simply amazing and are forever changing as ships and yachts of all sizes and nationalities pass by on their journeys and adventures.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My experience at Tropical Hideaway was absolutely fantastic. The accommodations are above and beyond anything I have been offered in the area, the prices are very reasonable, and the property is absolutely breathe-taking. Martin and Julie are the most wonderful hosts; they really make it feel like home. I cannot recommend this property highly enough - I will most definitely be returning!

Amazing Stay at Tropical Hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about Tropical Hideaway was amazing! From the beginning of the booking process Martin and Julie couldn't have been more helpful with information about Bequia and their property. The pool and view is spectacular as advertised - truly a remarkable and memorable experience just watching the day go by. We stayed in the Pool House and it was superb. Every amenity you could ask for was provided and the rooms very super comfortable and clean. The onsite grocery store has almost everything you could need. We can't recommend Tropical Hideaway strong enough. If you're considering a trip to Bequia you should stay at Tropical Hideaway and you will not be disappointed.

Luxury in paradise

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic holiday in Pool House at TropicalHideaway.

The owners Martin and Julie give a warm welcome and ensure your holiday runs smoothly by providing all amenities.

Clean and lovely apartment, comfy bed with lovely sheets, all the things that are important in a high standard accommodation.

The pool house is a fab size apartment with tons of space and cupboards etc and fab bathroom.

The infinity pool is amazing and sundowners round the pool bring back happy memories.

A well stock shop is on site with home cooked meals prepared in the kitchens.

These really do take the chore out of meal times and gives one the freedom a true holiday should have.

We have been to quite a few of the grenedine islands and stayed in well known luxury hotels, but believe me , this one has my vote.

Also the Island of Bequia is truly lovely, unspoilt and with a relaxed vibe.

Bequia also has a good choice of bar/restaurants too, especially compared with other small island luxury places.

Although in all honesty, most nights we were happy on our balcony enjoying Tropical Hideaway with a bottle of wine and one of the delicious meals as mentioned above.

Can't rate it highly enough really.

Wanted to leave a review because it deserves this. But please don't go when we want to!! Because we shall for sure return.

one of the best!!

  • 5 of 5

We have traveled to many different winter getaways for close to 30 years and this place is outstanding on all counts from the views, beautiful accommodations, amenities, staff, hosts, ambiance, right down to the details like quality soaps, towels, linens, pillows, and cookware - topped off with a great little onsite store. The hosts/owners & their 3 daughters put their hearts and enormous energy over many years into the meticulous design & hands on build of their tropical hideaway perched on the hill overlooking Princess Margaret beach and the bay. They did a magnificent job for all of us to enjoy with them. While we had complete privacy in "the pool house", we immediately felt the very friendly and helpful ambiance we had for our two week stay. ***NOTE WELL -- Martin has a quick sense of humor and it wasn't more than a few minutes til it was "game on!" -- lots of laughs lots of fun --

The TRUTH!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our most recent stay at Tropical Hideaway included 5 days in Palm Cottage (you can read that review if you choose) and another 13 days in my wife's favorite, the Pool House. We've been coming to TH since 2013 and consider it our home-away-from-home. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING about TH is five star. We'd give it 10 if we could. Nothing any place we have ever been even begins to approach the value for your money.

Specifically regarding the Pool House, it is obviously the closest to the most incredible infinity pool we have ever found in our extensive Caribbean travel. It is the only option at TH which provides two bedrooms (both w/AC) and therefore is the best option for family groups. It also has a full sized refrigerator and stove, as well as a washing machine. We think it is the best option for extended stays.

Bottom line...we can confidently assure you you'll love the island, Tropical Hideaway, and your hosts. You won't want to leave when it's time to go home. And you'll come back as soon as you can.

We are not alone in saying this. Almost everyone who has ever been there will tell you the same thing. Words like remarkable, fabulous, stunning...just aren't good enough.

We aren't the only people that come back again and again. There are LOTS OF US! So if you can't book when you want, book when you can.

You will not regret it.

We first took a chance on Tropical Hideaway back in August of 2013 because the reviews were so outstanding. It was so wonderful back then that we did not want to finish our carefully planned vacation in Mustique. We wanted to stay longer at TH. And since then we have returned time and time again.

It's impossible to use enough superlative language with TH. We love the proprietors, Martin and Julie. We love everyone on the staff. And we love the 3 Bengal cats. So we are coming back for Christmas and the New Year. As the title of this review states, Tropical Hideaway and the little island of Bequia are addictive. So be forewarned.

In our many trips to TH, we have watched Martin and Julie continually improve on what we first thought was near perfection. The packaged meals they now offer are better than most of the food you will get in local restaurants. The breakfasts on the upstairs patio are equally good and everything is reasonably priced. The landscaping is beautifully mature and lush. And some of the fresh fruit provided is grown on the premises.

All we can tell you is that the over two hundred 5-star reviews are telling you the truth. Tropical Hideaway is just want the name implies. As veteran Caribbean travelers, we have never found anything even remotely like it.

Beautiful Bequia (pronounced bek way) is an undiscovered paradise, the Caribbean of 20 years ago. Covering an area of only 7 square miles, Bequia lies in the warm tropical waters of the Caribbean Sea. It is just a short plane hop from the ever popular Barbados and next to the renowned Mustique, both favourite islands of the rich and famous. It is the largest of the Grenadine islands known also as the ‘jewels of the Caribbean’ and is blessed with several pristine, white sandy beaches many of which are totally natural and undeveloped.

If you want resort hotels, nightclubs and beaches full of sunbeds, don't come to Bequia. If you want to discover the undiscovered, visit our beautiful Island, enjoy the uncrowded pristine white sandy beaches, swim and snorkel in our safe and warm Caribbean waters and experience the genuine friendliness of the local Bequian people.

Bequia is an all year round destination with daytime temperatures consistently averaging between 24C (75F) and 30C (86F) throughout the year. A "chilly" evening in the winter months (January to March) might see a low of around 22C (72F) and in the summer months the temperature will occasionally reach 32C (90F).  Trade winds bring cooling breezes for most of the year and the famous Christmas Winds bring stronger breezes and livelier seas, perfect for the keen sailor.

The "dry" season from December to May coincides with the "high" season for visitors, with clear sunny skies, low humidity and minimal rainfall. The Island is totally reliant on rain for its water, so the arrival of the "rainy" season in May/June is always a blessing.  The warmer, summer months of May to November are a welcome mixture of occasional showers, sunshine and light breezes, with the isolated heavy downpour. Showers are usually short and mainly come in the night.

Bequia is far south in the hurricane belt, and although tropical storms will occasionally approach in the peak months of August to October, most disturbances either pass to the north or dissipate before they reach the Grenadine Islands chain.

Please note the so called “rainy season” is not a particularly reliable statement any more as the seasons have become very mixed and variable. The weather forecast for our part of the Caribbean typically states, ‘Sunshine with a mix of cloud and occasional showers’. It does reflect the changing climate and weather patterns and seems to be accurate for most of the year. At least the forecaster can never get it wrong.

Having two dive shops and around 24 dive sites, Bequia is a divers paradise. Our diverse marine environment includes relaxing reefs, wall dives, drift dives and even a few wrecks. You can still dive and snorkel away from the crowds in crystal clear waters with reefs that are still pristine. Our abundant and diverse sea life ranges from 100’s of species of Tropical Fish, Octopus, Sea Turtles and Sea Horses to name but a few. Bequia has it all and will satisfy beginners trying out snorkelling, scuba divers who wish to take a Padi course and experienced divers wishing to go on an exhilarating dive. Looking for an adventure? Try Discover Scuba with one of our two dive shops and enjoy a shallow reef dive with one of their experienced instructors.

We now have available our brand new forty page 2016 guidebook about Tropical Hideaway and the Island of Bequia. It has detailed information about local services, the fun things to do, our local restaurants, day trips to nearby islands and a wealth of other information invaluable for anyone intending to visit our beautiful island. To read our complimentary guidebook please go to the very bottom of this page or visit our website, scroll down the Tropical Hideaway 'Welcome' page and click on the guide book.
