Comfortable, cozy, relaxing, refreshing!

  • 5 of 5

Superior Solitude was the perfect getaway! We were just far enough from it all to "unplug" yet close enough to town/hiking trail when we felt like getting out. The home was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for a smooth stay. Bed was quite comfy. The night air was cool and quiet and the only sounds were of the waves lapping the shore. Our pups came with and enjoyed swimming along the shoreline and drying off on the enormous deck where there was always a sunny spot. We did not need to contact our hosts, but their numbers were readily available. Grand Marais is a quick drive up the road (13 miles). Try the APA at Voyager Brewing if you go (and they are dog-friendly). Highly recommend Superior Solitude!

Excellent Place Right on the Lake

  • 5 of 5

My wife wanted to stay on the shore of Lake Superior, and this place fit the bill perfectly. You’re right on the shoreline. We spent a good bit of time on the rocks along the shore (which were easy to get to and easy to walk on), but the view from the cabin and deck was excellent too.

The cabin was also close to the Cascade River State Park (maybe 5 minutes up the road) which we highly recommend you visit to see the waterfalls ($5 and I think the pass is good at any other state park for that day). We also visited the Grand Portage State Park right at the US-Canadian border to see the tallest waterfall in Minnesota (it’s around an hour north, free to walk to the waterfall, it’s mostly paved and has some boardwalk, and there are plenty of clean and modern rest stop facilities right there). On the way up to Grand Portage you’ll see a scenic pull-off to the right with a view that defies description. By all means pull off and check it out. Even cell phone photos of this view will make you the envy of everyone on your Contacts list.

The cabin itself was well-stocked in terms of kitchenware, towels, etc. We had everything we needed. The dishwasher was portable, but it was very quick and easy to use (instructions were provided). Beds and furnishings were comfortable. Everything was clean and well-organized. We brought some drinking water just to be safe, but didn’t end up using it as the water at the cabin was just fine.

The weather was quite varied. We had plenty of sunshine, but also saw a nice rainbow over the lake. There was a big storm our last night, with quite an impressive light show outside (nicely visible from the large windows).

The owners were very easy to work with. We had a great time and highly recommend this property.

Perfect North Shore Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an outstanding weekend at Superior Solitude. The scenery alone is worth more than you'll pay and the cabin is very comfortable and appropriately updated. Our dog loved to frolick on the rocks and into and out of the lake (pretty sure it was the best weekend of our dogs life), the deck gave you incredible views from dawn til dusk and the wildlife was awesome. The owners were quick and kind in their responses. My wife and I have been looking for a cabin that has that 'up north' feel but with lots of privacy that we can return to year after year. I think we found it, I cannot wait to come back!

If I had to find some complaints, and realize these are both pretty minor, I'd suggest a little more yard cleanup. It would be nice to have a place to throw a tennis ball with the pooch or to play bocce ball with the family. It is pretty well overgrown which does make you feel like you're in a cabin in the wild (sort of the point of going up north right?) but it would be nice to have a little breathing room outside. And I know there were fire concerns when we were up north but a fire pit is pretty essential to most of my weekends. I'm not sure if I just missed it, if it was removed until the fire concerns level off or if we should've simply built a fire on the rocks. Either way, nothing that is a deal breaker of any sort, I still easily give this place 5 stars.

I can't stress enough how much I loved this place!

Perfect north shore property

  • 5 of 5

The relatively lower price combined with what you come to the north shore for--crashing waves against ledge rock, comfortable queen and king beds, wood burning stove, unbelievable beauty, privacy, close to excellent food and massage--are why after 30+ years of coming to the north shore we have found our cabin of choice. Don't tell anyone about it so we can keep it our secret!
