The White House is so named to distinguish it from the other two family cabins on the property that are green. It is also where we house our most distinguished guests so we thought it deserved a name with a sense of importance. The White House was originally a year round home built and lived in for years by an old Norwegian (American) bachelor named Hans who was also a WWII Vet. The house was solidly built and insulated to survive rugged Minnesota winters. It has a basement for storage. The interior of the house was completely remodeled when it was first sold about 10 years ago. It was purchased by a family member in 2012 who upgraded it again by adding central air conditioning, hard surfaced floors, and a 280 sq ft front and side deck. These improvements greatly enhanced the comfort of summer living, extended out the living space, and made the cottage more pet friendly.
The cottage has Internet connectivity, a flat screen TV with a cd player, and a large eclectic CD library. There are a variety of board and other games available. It has a well furnished full kitchen with core appliances, microwave, Caphalon pots, baking pans, dishes, etc. There is a propane grill for those who like to BBQ. A baby crib can be set up on request. Overall the cottage is designed and furnished to offer comfortable no worry vacationing and relaxing in a nice setting for our guests including kids and pets. It is sturdy, clean, and well furnished with quality beds , furniture, kitchen supplies, etc. but it is not fancy. It is for lake living. Come and kickback and relax and don’t worry if a little sand tracks in.
The White House is located on a beautiful acre + lot bounded in the back by woods and in the front by County Hwy 1. The back yard is a large grassy meadow. Baseball games have been known to occur in that meadow. Nice views of Ottertail Lake are visible from the front porch and it is a short 2 min walk across the road to the shore. Guests have access to approximately 70 ft of lake shore which has a picnic table and chairs, a fire pit, and a 75 ft dock. It is a wonderful swimming area as the sand lake bottom is shallow near shore and has a gentle slope that allows wading and playing out several hundred feet before the water is chest high. While there is not a boat lift available for guest usage, there is a very strong in water mooring available to attach a guest boat. It was designed to moor a heavy 21ft Bay Liner with an inboard motor in the late summer when the water level may drop too low to get the boat off the lift. (Note: because we and our neighbors have had some very annoying experiences with jet skis, we currently do not allow guests to moor those here. )
Fishing is possible from our dock or from the bridge over Dead River which connects Ottertail Lake to Walker Lake and is a 5 minute walk from The White House. The Potter’s Daughter – a wonderful and well known local artist – has her shop across the street and down a couple houses. Amor Park – a lovely county park with covered picnic areas, a swimming beach, slides and play area, and horseshoe pits – is less than 3 miles away. And as listed in other places there are many other parks, places to hike, fish, bicycle, golf, shop, eat out, go to a turtle race, or catch a movie within easy driving distance (if you somehow get tired of simply relaxing at the lake). Ottertail County is summer vacation country and there are many venues and activities for residents and visitors alike. We know the area and will be right across the street. Ask us.
