I can also recommend activities and refer you to booking site which can plan for you day tours fit to your interest. Me and my boyfriend Hrafn have been renting out our holiday home for three years now with a good reputation and we decided to help our friend and colleague Steinar with his two beautiful cottages Sydri-bru and Solbakki. If you need to hire a car I can give you quote from the car rental autorental.is, which is a small family operated car rental we run.
This is a lovely home in a fantastic location!
The house was spotless when we arrived. It has a nice open layout and more than enough room for our family of four. The kitchen was fully equipped. The hot tub was amazing and a great option to have after a long day exploring the country. Our children also really enjoyed the trampoline. The radiant heating through the floor works perfectly. We also really appreciated that we did not have to buy toilet paper, paper towels, dishwasher detergent, or laundry detergent.
The location was perfect for us. There is a wonderful view from the house itself. It also is very close to Selfoss with its great grocery stores and restaurants, as well as to horseback riding and local hikes. The proximity and easy access to the Golden Circle and the Ring Road made it easy to take day trips to lots of sights in the south of Iceland, as well as into Reykjavik itself.
Þórunn was extremely welcoming and helpful, and we can't thank her enough!
This is a very spacious house, nicely furnished and very well equipped. We found everything we needed and more. Dishwasher, washing machine, chest freezer, large fridge were all there. The location is great, as are the views. We enjoyed our day trips and we enjoyed the terrace and hot tub afterwards.
Þórunn is very helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. Thanks to her directions and advice, we had no trouble finding the place, and the locations of nearby supermarkets and restaurants.
We stayed a week, and wished we could have stayed longer.
Seven of us friends stayed in the golden cottage as we called it, but it would be also perfect for a family. We spent lots of time in and around the house, a sprawling single storey property with everything we needed for a homely, well-positioned stay in mid-summer. Peaceful, cute terrace for enjoying the 24-hour light, especially the glow of the evening sun, and we made good use of the hot tub! Great bright communal room, glazed all the way around for more views while playing late night games. Hard to remember to go to bed when the sun never sets...
We cooked lots of food ourselves and found the kitchen very well-equipped, as if you'd kitted it out yourself. Massive fridge and a separate chest freezer in the utility room. Surprise hit was the toastie-maker!
Perfectly located for amazing sights including Gullfoss, Geysir, hot streams of Hveragerði, crater lake Kerio and the historic Thingvellir national park. On the doorstep of the Grimsnes area is unspoiled beauty in every direction, whether you wander across the mossy, wild flower-filled fields that wrap around the cottage, or simply drive around and follow your whims. Further afield, several hours drive east is the ice lagoon, which is just about doable there and back in a day, particularly when there is no sunset to beat. The destination and the journey both more than worth the time, with varied and other-worldly landscapes a given around every corner.
One very minor downside is we found the house a little too warm. The Icelanders seemingly have free access to limitless geothermal underfloor heating and are very comfortable like this, or simply fling open the windows to cool down. But being from England, we are used to more freshness, especially at night, and had to ask for it to be turned down (wasn't as simple as turning a dial on the wall). They were absolutely fine and helpful about this, even if they didn't really understand why we wouldn't want to be lovely and piping hot all the time! Our contact Þórunn was extremely sweet and helpful, and we were able to keep in touch easily by phone and email for any queries. The best choice for supermarkets was in the fairly large town Selfoss, 15 mins or so drive south of the cottage.
After five nights we moved on to Reykjavik for a taste of the city. An absolutely unforgettable trip which left us planning our next visit, almost the minute we got home!
The cottage was just perfectly suited for our group of 8. It was spacious, very clean and bright inside thanks to large windows. The kitchen is a treasure trove - we had large enough pans to cook for so many people, the stove is huge, there was a toaster and even a waffle iron. The house is equipped with games (in Icelandic) and also boasts a huge poker case. Finally, the hot pot is just amazing after a long walking trip. We used it a lot and enjoyed the nice view from the terrace.
Þórunn is a great host. She waited patiently for us to arrive (which was a lot later than scheduled) and was always available whenever we called her.
As for the surroundings: There is loads to explore. The famous Þingvellir is close by and definitely worth a visit, as are Strokkur and the Gulfoss. Reykjavík is closer than we thought and you can spend a relaxing day there. Two more highlights: A walk to Eyjafjallajökull is within a 1,5-hours drive. And one of the highland routes (the easiest one) starts close by. A must see!
