We've just returned from a fabulous two-week stay at the lovely Rithymna Mansion and it was every bit as lovely as the photos suggest. The villa is very spacious and cool with lots of extra touches that make it a little more special than many other villas. For example, if you like to read, you will love the huge range of books (in English) that adorn the shelves, there's even a study! Every room has a view and access to a balcony or veranda. The villa occupies a prime position between two sets of mountains with the sea to the front of the property. Both sunrise and sunset can be enjoyed from the many vantage points outside. As others have already commented on, Maria is a marvel. She keeps the villa pristine without ever being intrusive. We have enjoyed many villa holidays over the years but this is definitely the cleanest and most well serviced - thank you again Maria! The pool is beautiful and very large, big enough to properly swim in. It easily accommodated the eight adults and one infant who made up our party and of course you can enjoy the view while you swim. Prines is a tiny village and only a short walk from the villa. We enjoyed many tasty meals and great hospitality at Veranta which serves traditional Cretan food and wine. It's always nice to meet the owner of a villa and we've met some lovely ones in the past but Giorgos is in a league of his own. We arrived very late to the property (after a trip to A & E and a delayed flight) but Giorgos was there to greet us with a smile and a delicious hot meal which was unbelievably welcome and unexpected! The fridge was stacked with an abundance of wonderful fresh fruit that we enjoyed for at least a week. We required assistance during our trip (unconnected to the villa) and Giorgos went above and beyond what would usually be expected, giving us his time without question. We will never be able to thank him enough. We don't give out 5 star reviews easily and so you can be sure that this villa deserves every single one. Just turn up and relax!

Incredible - everything about it was superb

  • 5 of 5

Giorgos is a fabulous host - before we even arrived in Crete he checked that we had everything we needed. He met us at the motorway junction to show us the way to the villa and stayed to show us around. WOW is the only word - the villa is beautiful and in immaculate condition, the pool is big and deep, the garden is lovely, the views are incredible - we fell in love with it immediately. When Giorgos said he had left a few things in the fridge for us we were astounded to see the fridge absolutely full of fruit, water, wine and beer - a very generous gesture.

The villa is very spacious and there are 4 double bedrooms, all with views. There were only 5 of us staying and there was plenty of space to spread out, but even if there were 8 people staying you would still find a quiet corner to yourself.

We used the BBQ one night and had several table tennis tournaments.

Maria looks after the house and she is lovely, and very discrete. We hardly knew she had been in except that everything was tidy !

The bonus for us was the very short walk to the village where there are 3 good restaurants.

We're telling everyone about it and can't wait to go again next year.

A piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Rithymna Mansion villa for twelwe days as a family of 4 persons (3 adults and a 7-year-old child). The whole stay at this wonderful place was absolutely perfect, one hardly does not know where to begin in describing it.

When we arrived in the evening with our rental car in Prines and couldn’t find straightaway the villa, we only had to make one phone call to Giorgos and he was immediately there to show us the right way. He also showed us around the whole villa and we were fascinated from the beginning on. The whole villa and also the pool area and the broad location around the house is not only very, very beautiful but also very clean and well-groomed. Giorgos had also bought us a lot of food and drinks that was already in the refrigerator when we arrived. So we already had the most important groceries we needed for the next day and also a lot more.

In the first two days we were kind of overwhelmed from the beauty and the magnitude of the house, the pool and the whole property. But only after a few days we really felt at home at this place. It is just so easy to feel at home there because everything is perfect and there is nothing that one would miss, the whole house is perfectly equipped. This is also due to Maria, who comes there every day and keeps everything around and in the house very well in touch, and you barely see her. We really liked her so much, she is a very nice person. There is also Vangelis who cleans the pool all three days early in the morning. He is also a very nice guy.

To the middle of Prines, it is only a short walk and besides that it is a wonderful village with very friendly people who live there, you find there everything you need. There are three nice tavernas and a little supermarket. And to the next beach it is a 15-minutes ride per car, where you have then a huge choice of beautiful beach sections to go at.

During the wohle stay, we felt very safe in this house and in the village. There is really nothing to worry about, I think it is one of the safest places in the world. This is also because Giorgos would be available for you at every time, if you have any questions or problems. It was also so nice to have dinner with him the last evening and to get know him better. He is such an awesome and gentle person.

We had the best vacation that we could ever imagine and we already booked for next year to come again, because we never want to go anywhere else.

With best regards from Dagmar, Barbara, Laura and Johanna

Most amazing villa

  • 5 of 5

We booked this villa for 2 weeks as a family of 4 adults and 2 children. From the minute we arrived we were just blown away. The owner Giorgos met us at the villa to give us a grand tour. The villa is simply stunning and has everything you could possibly need plus more. the villa is so spacious it took is a few days to stop getting lost and the outside pool area is simply stunning with a pool fit for a small hotel! We noticed that the villa did not have a safe and Giorgos went out that day and bought one installed it the very next day, how's that for service! Maria, the housekeeper came most days (5out of 7) and kept everything spotless without ever getting in our way, in fact most of the time we hardly knew she was around. The fridge upon arrival was filled to the brim with beer, wine, soft drinks and the most delicious fruits, in fact it took us nearly 2 weeks to eat all of the fruit. A big bonus of this villa for us was that all cleaning products are provided for you (not that we needed to clean as Maria kept it spotless) but little things like washing powder and dish cloths were all available. My mum also broke her arm in the trip and Giorgos was so helpful in getting us to the hospital and speaking to the hospital staff via the phone, he even sent his mum to the hospital to ensure we were ok, a very thoughtful touch. We enjoyed a couple of lovely evening meals out with Giorgos and it is clear he only wants his clients to have the most amazing stay and talks passionatly about making his villa the best in the area. We loved it so much we have already booked to go back next year and can't wait.

Fabulous Family Home

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous family home surrounded by a beautiful well maintained garden.

Giorgos the owner made us very welcome and was proud to show us around his lovely home. We were greeted with an abundance of fresh fruit and a very well stocked fridge. A huge thank you to Maria who worked tirelessly to keep everything spotless and being so discreet. The pool and outside area are truly amazing with magnificent views across to the white mountains making it a perfect place to relax.

Yet an easy drive down into Rethymnon town where excellent restaurants and bars can be found. Also make sure you visit Giannikos

Taverna a short walk from the house. Thanks Giorgos for everything and letting us stay at your beautiful house.

Hope to return again sometime.

Take care and we send you our very best wishes.

Idyllic slice of heaven in Crete, a secluded palace and a home.

  • 5 of 5

I take a long long time deciding where to take my family each year, work is very tough on my time and the two weeks we get each summer is priceless to me. I like to have all the boxes ticked and not settle for missing wants.

I stumbled upon Giorgos and his once old family residence while looking at villas in Crete. The villa is situated in a small, and very friendly village. Set in Beautiful gardens with fruit trees and vines, it is the real crowning jewel of the few villas in the surrounding area.

If you were to be bought blindfolded to the villa and not leave your entire stay, I believe you may only see the lovely Maria (housekeeper) from your secluded rural fortress that is now home. You arrive and feel an immediate weight rise off you, all you need is only moments away with local restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores; but then you shut the regal gate behind you and it as though you have stepped into your own private palace.

Maria who looks after all house cleaning and keeps the house ship shape is a miracle work, or possibly magician. We stayed a full 2 weeks and she cleans everything top to bottom alternate days a week (all bedding, towels etc). What Amazed me was that unless you called out to say hello or needed something she was invisible. It is a huge house but with 8 in the family all in at the same time it was a great talent.

The Villa/home/palace wow!!! I do not have the words to fully describe it. You see gentle hints of the past and warmth from what was originally a full time family home. History is in the brick as they say. Giorgos has beautifully combined the modern with the traditional which is exactly my style. From arrival you want for nothing, the house, LAKE of a pool and all surrounding gardens are so perfectly cared for and tendered we fell into the illusion it was home! PERFECT!

Mr Giorgos, from booking to arrival and through stay he beyond exceeded all expectations. I have stayed in villas across the world for over ten years and never have I been met by such a warm, intelligent and caring man. The list of how he went above and beyond for us as a family is humbling and would embarrass such a gentleman. Simply the host and a good friend I am keen to see again soon.

During your stay make use of mr Giorgos's knowledge of his island. We were sent on so many beautiful adventures and ideally no tourist noise or feel.

This holiday for us was so much more, we found a home away from home and the best summer to date.

Prines is a small ancient village, with some houses dating back to Venetian times, having olive trees, oak trees and much vegetation. Located 5 km to the hillside to the west of the seaside town of Rethymno, and undisturbed by heavy traffic, it is an ideal location for those who love and enjoy a quiet, peaceful life. The Venetian occupation of Crete (1204 – 1669 AD) has left its traces on Prines, which, together with the nearby village of Vederi, are classified as “preserved traditional settlements”. In the north part of the village you see the old village spring and nearby the St. Nicolas church, built in the 13th century. The old houses of the village were constructed a century ago with stone and wood, according to tradition, with half a meter thick walls.
