Mable Haardt Cottage, former home of ROBERT DAVIS. When Seaside was first created by Robert Davis, there were only five original houses in all of Seaside. This cottage on 34 Tupelo Street was the home of Seaside founder Robert Davis and now is called THE MABEL HAARDT COTTAGE. Now, the city is fully developed, but back in the early 1980's the city of Seaside was but a fertile seed of Mr. Davis' unique and expansive imagination.
"The Yellow House is one of the first two Seaside Cottages. It served both as the initial residence of Robert and Daryl Davis and as a model home for prospective buyers.
The house is based on prototypes from northwest Florida of which the architect, Robert Davis, had sketches and photographs. The design highlights the pitch and form of the roof which is gabled in the center with a surrounding hip roof covering the porch. The porch faces south to capture the prevailing south-southeast breezes and contributes to the passive solar design of the house by shading it in the summer when the sun is high and allowing the window glass to collect heat in the winter when the sun is low.
The initial concept promoted a large interior living space wrapped by a porch, and over time the porch was filled in as small spaces were enclosed. As gas stoves gained popularity over wood stoves, the kitchen was moved inside, and the same was true of plumbing to accommodate a flush toilet and septic tank. A small bedroom was partitioned off, and the porch is still used to accommodate guests. When originally built, a return air grill at the top of the ceiling allowed for fans to carry the warm air from the central space to the periphery to heat the partitioned spaces."
When you stay in the Mabel Haardt cottage you will be experiencing some of Seaside, Florida's earliest history. This house, only a minute to the beach and a 5 minute walk into the center of town. This two bedroom, two bath cottage is all on one level except for the loft. There is a king bedroom and private bath (tub only) and a double bedroom with a hall bath with shower and side exit. There is also a loft, with a twin bed, overlooking the living room, dining, and kitchen areas. There is a screened, wrap around porch complete with porch swing and rockers.

My grandmother, Mabel Haardt, purchased this house for me in 1992, when I was only 3 years old. She maintained until her death in 2003. Now I manage it with my mother Anton Haardt. I live in Charleston, South Carolina and visit my cottage often with a hands-on personal interest.

After looking at a number of properties in Seaside on Homeaway we rented the Mabel Haardt Cottage for Spring Break this year because of its proximity to the beach and the town of Seaside. The location of the cottage did not disappoint, but was overshadowed by our difficulties during our stay. We flew there from Philadelphia and had to contact the owner the day before our flight to learn how to check in. The cottage was charming with so much potential, but it needs a lot of maintenance work. The owner has made some upgrades, most notably a new couch, Wolf gas range and linens, but many aspects of the house need repaired/replaced. For example, the clawfoot bathtub in the master bathroom appeared to leak (it had a full pan of water under it when we arrived), one sink had only hot water and one had only cold water, many of the window shutters were broken and could not be closed for privacy, and exterior gates were hanging off their hinges. The concierge company seemed disorganized (they did not even call to give us check in information until the 4th day of our vacation.) However, none of these things would have prompted us to write a one star review. What did prompt us to write such a review was that one night we were awakened by a loud scraping sound of what we later learned was a rat trying to escape from the owner's storage closet in our master bathroom. The next day we called the owner and the concierge service and were assured that this problem had never happened before and that a pest company would be sent over. The exterminator came but had to come back at the end of the day because the owner didn't initially agree to authorize extermination services. When the exterminator opened the trap door to the attic to look around a significant amount of rat feces fell out. The exterminator baited traps and caught a rat. I texted the owner to let him know that the exterminator had caught a rat and was going to rebait the traps in case there were more. I never even heard back from the owner, nor did he offer in any way to reimburse us for any part of our stay given what had happened. As we had nowhere else to stay and did not have a flight back to Philadelphia for several more days we stayed at the cottage for the remainder of the week, but we would never return or recommend this property to others. A quaint cottage that, in our opinion, is poorly maintained and managed.
I will be bringing the Family to Seaside for our fourth stay at Mabel Haardt Cottage in as many years. For My Family, there is no other place to stay. It has become our "Home Away From Home" in Seaside. What you will find at Mabel Haardt is a beautiful and spacious, cottage that has the old world feel reflective of its history yet with all the modern conveniences where it counts. If you are one who likes to cook while on vacation, this kitchen with its Viking Range will not disappoint. The spaciousness and layout of this cottage are perfect for a family with children or couples that are traveling together. I cannot say enough good things about his cottage and its owner. If we have ever had an issue and the concierge was not immediately available, the owner was just a text message away. Any request that we have ever made has always been fulfilled in what I consider a very timely fashion. It has been a delightful experience every time. There have even been suggestions that I have made to the owner of things that could possibly be improved upon, and trust me there are not many. However, whatever reasonable suggestion I have made, the owner has always promptly fulfilled my request and has even gone as far as to update me after I have left. In fact the owner has even updated me in the middle of the year of improvements that have been made in anticipation of our return. What other accommodation do you receive that kind of personal service. This owner is not just about collecting the rent. He is about pleasing the guests and ensuring repeat business. He aims to please. As I have mentioned before, he has been successful in guaranteeing that we will not stay elsewhere when we visit. I think one of the highlights of this property is the prime location. It sits on Tupelo Street, which is one of the first streets as you enter Seaside, just steps away from 30A and what I consider to be the best Beach Pavilion in the area. Of course the convenience to the center of town and everything else imaginable are huge selling points for my family. Whether you are traveling with small children, teenagers etc, it just works. Travelers will not regret the experience they have when staying at this property in Seaside. This trip is a standing agenda item on my family's yearly calendar. Consistency and knowing what you are getting are big deals to me when I travel. I never have an issue with those two concerns when I travel to Mabel Haardt Cottage.
The description is perfect. This cottage was built by the developer of Seaside, and was one of the original model homes. The convenience to the beach and to Town Center is hard to beat. However, the house could use some updating. There is very little overhead lighting and few lamps -- so night time makes the cottage dark, and it is even worse if the weather turns cloudy/stormy.
There is only one indoor shower (which was disclosed), but the outdoor shower is not really usable as a "shower" -- it would work fine to rinse off from the beach.
The bikes provided all had flat tires.
I think the real complaint lies with the company that the owners use to rent the house -- Swan Tree 30A. I would go out of my way to make sure I NEVER rent a house that is managed by this company. we were NEVER provided our wrist bands that allowed us access to the beach by this company (which in Seaside is how the beach access is managed). Repeated calls to the management company went unreturned; when I finally reached a live person, he told me to contact the owner. I did that, and to their credit, the owner replied that she would check on the status -- and then never got back in touch to see if anything had been done.
Having rented in the area many times, this was the worst experience we have ever had -- but I blame the management company more than the property. in the future, I will call more reputable management companies directly (Vacation Owners, Cottage Rental 30A) rather than run the risk of doing business with Swan Tree again.
What an amazing weekend we have just had at the Mabel Haardt Cottage in Seaside. I have to say I was a little wary to book this cottage, as there had been some mixed reviews. However, the cottage and its owner exceeded our expectations. I am curious if the outraged reviewer even stayed in the same cottage, or perhaps was fishing for a discounted rate? Regardless, we did not encounter ANY of the problems that were mentioned. Before our arrival, we were contacted by the owner to arrange arrival meeting times with the concierge service, he was very helpful and even gave his personal cell incase we encountered any problems checking in and suggested a great lunch spot nearby. We arrived to a charming, clean beach cottage with modern amenities and furnishings. Even better, the cottage is a stones throw from the beach. We prefer to cook on our family vaca’s and were able to with pleasure, in what seemed like a true chef’s kitchen. The screened in porch offered the perfect dining experience, we could even hear the ocean as we ate! The owner provided bikes, and we spent countless each afternoon cruising around this historic neighborhood. We really did feel at home in this beach house and have already booked to come back at the end of the summer!
This home is convenient to the beach and downtown Seaside. It is charming and was plenty spacious for my family of four. Very nice kitchen appliances and cookware. There was an abundance of nice hotel quality towels. We enjoyed the available sand toys, boogie boards, and bicycles. It was a very home-like environment but the cottage needs a deep cleaning and some routine maintenance. I didn't receive any check-in information from the property management/concierge service till we were already en route (16 hour car ride for us). It would have been nice to have received this info. and details prior to packing our bags and departing from home. Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Seaside and at the Mabel Haardt Cottage but I would prefer a cleaner facility with a few upgrades before staying here again.
I stayed at the sweetheart home about a year ago for the first time. I noticed there were a couple of updates that would have really improved the place, but really enjoyed it despite that. The owner asked if there was anything I would suggest he do to better the home for guests. I thought this was incredibly attentive of him. I returned to the home in January, and am happy to report that there was a new couch, new porch swing and the owner had purchased bicycles for guests to use which saved me money on weekly rentals. I look forward to returning here with friends in the fall. I highly recommend staying here. The beach is two doors down. If you don't feel like getting sandy again at sunset you can sit in the Adirondack chairs to watch the beautiful sunsets. There's a Blueheron who frequents the beach here and has been in the forefront of many of my sunset pictures. You can walk or bike everywhere such an incredible spot! Many evenings we would just sit on our front porch and have wine and snacks it was such a nice homey place to be I look forward to my next trip to Sweethaardt!
