This home was perfect for my husband and me for a long weekend . The home is very nice and had everything that we needed . The kitchen is very well equipped. Coral, the owner met us at the house when we checked in and gave us plenty of ideas for things to explore near the town . She also recommended some great restaurants ( Marcos is a local favorite !) the hiking was beautiful and the town of Brevard is very cute with quant shops. The home has an gas fireplace so we didn't have to buy wood . My husband and I plan on returning next fall!!
Beautiful property . Cabin was clean with great amenities . Quiet with wonderful views.
We stayed in Coral's Spirit of the Mountain retreat over Thanksgiving for 4 nights with a 16 year old girl and 13 year old boy. The layout of the cabin is very comfortable in that we all had our "own space" but were together the whole time. Our daughter loved the room upstairs, all to herself and our son loved the game room downstairs with his half bath and futon and pool table that we all enjoyed nightly. We enjoyed the gas fire in the living room daily and the kitchen had everything we needed by way of tools and pans to make our meals.
Coral met us on the first evening and was very gracious even after we were gone, when she mailed us my daughter's jeans that had been left in the dryer! The cabin was very clean and well kept. We were careful to follow the garbage rules since there can be bears in the forest and everything was provided to make our stay easy, including extra trash bags, paper towels, soap, dishwasher detergent, etc.
The location of the cabin is fantastic. It's very very close to Brevard, which is the cutest little town. The nearest grocery and Walmart are only minutes away and the proximity to both Dupont State Forest and the Pisgah National Forest is amazing. We were minutes from countless, fabulous hikes. Although the cabin is at the top of the mountain, it's still very accessible. We've stayed in some, where the road up was gravel, narrow and so steep that these flat-land-Floridians got nervous going up at night. This cabin has very good access and although steep, a very nice safe road with no traffic.
I have already recommended this cabin to a friend. Do not hesitate to book it. You will enjoy your stay at the top of this mountain. :)
We recently stayed at the Spirit Bear;the last week of June 2013.
It's a very nice cabin, very private with a nice view.
However, we were in need of a handicapped cabin. I have Lou Gehrig's
disease (ALS) and can only move my neck. Thankfully, I have a laser eye
communicator which enables me to type this.
The cabin is advertised as handicapped accessible. Like many places that
advertise as handicapped friendly, we have found that is simply not the
So, I wanted to clarify the particular features of this cabin that might
make it difficult for many.
There are steps into the cabin, we carry a portable ramp;so we were able
to get in. I should note that the owner of the cabin did notify us of the
steps before hand, so we were expecting these. We were led to believe that
the rest of the cabin was handicap accessible.
However, the door to the bathroom was too narrow to get in with the
wheelchair. Fortunately, we had a shower wheelchair that is a little more
narrow so i would have to be transferred to that to get into the bathroom.
Once I was in there though more problems arose. The toilet was not
handicapped equipped, it did not have a hand rail.
The shower was step, not roll in. There wasn't a handrail in the shower.
It did not have a hand held shower head. There was no room for shower
The master bed did not have room to pull wheelchair beside bed.
Until three years ago, I would not have had a clue what was necessary for a
person with disabilities to get around and the very difficult task of
finding a vacation spot.
In fact, most of the places that are on the handicapped vacation sites are
not truly suitable for the person with disabilities.
My purpose of writing this review is to make people aware that it is not
handicap accessible, as advertised. However, it is a nice cabin for those
who are not disabled.
My friend and I planned a last-minute getaway for a little mommy R&R. We were able to take advantage of the 40% discount since we booked our trip within 7 days of traveling. You could not ask for a better place to stay for $195/night! Coral, the owner, was quick to respond to my reservation inquiry and was extremely friendly (both on the phone and when we met at Spirit of the Bear). The cabin was clean, stocked, and so amazingly peaceful! If you spend a few minutes on the deck at night, you might be rewarded with a bear "sighting" (or at least the lights of a bear's eyes in the dark), its growl, and the distressed calls of its cubs...really!
If you make a trip to Brevard, be sure to eat at Cielito Lindo. The food was fantastic (and cheap). If it's a massage that you desire, La Petite Spa offers resonable rates for quality services. And finally, Hendersonville is a great place to spend an afternoon shopping and eating. Mezzaluna makes the best BBQ chicken pizza.
Thank you, Coral, for providing a place where we could renew our spirit.
There at the peak of fall - clean; spectacular views; s'mores over the campfire; relaxing atmosphere; very comfortable; fresh, crisp air - just breathe it in. White squirrel greeted us every morning outside front door of Spirit Bear cabin - amazing. Kids highly enjoyed also. Highly recommend.
