About the property

Beautifully Restored Trullo In Puglian Countryside On Outskirts Of Aberobello

Trullo Lina is in an idyllic rural setting only 3k m from the centre of Alberobello, and within a 15-minute drive to Martina Franca and Locorotondo. Standing at the end of a private track, 300 metres from the public tarmacked lane it is a haven of tranquility. Silence is only broken by bird song from the neighbouring wood and occasional tractors ploughing the land. It is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday, away from the stresses of modern life.

Stylishly and sympathetically restored, the trullo lies within its 1.7 hectares of land and has extensive stone terraces (600 sqm) all around with a stunning circular pool to the rear (10 metres in diametre). There are pretty shrub gardens to the front and back of the house.

Dating from the late 18th century, Trullo Lina was purchased in Spring 2013 having been abandoned for many years. Restoration was completed in January 2014 by local stone masons and craftsmen using century-old skills The 'modern' extension, added during the 1950s, was demolished and rebuilt. Every effort has been made to adhere to traditional design, materials and colours without compromising on modern comforts.

Trulli have thick stone walls and conical stone roofs to keep the interior cool in summer and warm in winter. In keeping with this design, the newly-built part has thick tufo stone walls lined with white stucco on the inside, and stone vaulted ceilings All the windows and doors have been crafted by a local carpenter. They are double glazed with internal panelled shutters to keep the house cosy in winter. Traditional iron grills have been fitted to the external doors and windows. Much thought has been put into equipping the trullo as a home not just a holiday rental. All the fixtures and fittings are of a high standard, and furniture has been chosen in keeping with the style of a typical trullo, whilst also providing sufficient drawers and hanging space for guests.

Trullo Lina sleeps 8 people comfortably (or up to 10 if including small children, making use of the sofa-bed and/or cot for an infant). There are 4 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a sitting room with fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen and a large dining room. There is central heating for the winter months.

Two of the bedrooms have double beds with bedside cabinets, drawers and hanging space. The other two bedrooms each have 2 x single beds and are furnished with bedside cabinets, drawers and hanging space.

The BATHROOMS are lined with local marble, and each has a walk-in shower, large sink with mirrored cabinet, toilet and bidet.

The KITCHEN is located in one of the original 19th century cones but has all the luxuries of a 21st century kitchen; stone work surfaces, hand-built cupboards, fan-assisted electric oven, large 6-ring gas hob, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, toaster and kettle. There are ample pans and utensils, crockery, cutlery, wine glasses and tumblers to cater for 10 guests.

The DINING ROOM is spacious, light and airy with stone vaulted ceilings and French windows to the front and rear terraces. It therefore has views over the extensive undulating land to the front and the swimming pool at the back. There is a large dining table and chairs, seating 8 adults comfortably, and 10 at a squeeze.

The main entrance leads into the THE SITTING ROOM which is situated in the largest, highest cone, and has beautifully restored stone walls, wood beams and lots of nooks and crannies typical of trulli. From the door and window there are far-reaching views across the front terrace to the olive grove beyond. In the summer it stays cool, and is a welcome retreat from the hot Puglian sun. In the winter it is cosy and warm, with a log fire. There is WI-FI, a TV, a docking station for MP3 player and a selection of books and DVDs for guests to enjoy.

To the exterior of the trullo are over 600 square metres of TERRACES laid with local stone and leading to the large circular SWIMMING POOL (with external shower). There is ample space around the pool for sunbathing on the sunbeds and deckchairs or taking a 'siesta' in the shade of an olive tree. There is a table and chairs and a large sunshade.

This spacious stunning terrace at the front of the house, looks out across the land and olive grove, and has a hand-crafted wrought iron gazebo to provide shade at lunchtime. After a day round the pool, this terrace is perfect for aperitifs and sunset dinners. There is a large square table seating 10-12 people.

There is a wide selection of restaurants in Alberobello and the neighbouring towns serving the renowned Puglian specialities. Whilst there is little reason to move from the pool apart from to buy supplies, the blue flag beaches and crystal clear water of the Adriatic and Ionian seas are within a 30 minute drive.

About Louise Allen

We are an Anglo/Italian family with 2 daughters. We live in London but the rest of our family live in Rome. The property is a second home for all the family, many of whom were born in Puglia.

Louise Allen purchased this villa in 2013

Why Louise Allen chose Martina Franca

We chose this property as we fell in love with 'trulli' the first time we visited Puglia in 1990. Although born in Rome, my husband's family are from Puglia and encouraged us to visit Alberobello with its famous trulli on our first trip to the South. It seemed fitting that when the family wanted to purchase a holiday home in a peaceful setting away from the stresses of London and Rome, Puglia, and in particular a trullo in Alberobello was the obvious choice.

The proximity of the international airports in Bari and Brindisi and of rail stations with connections to intercity trains (Monopoli and Bari) was another attractive feature of this area.

Although in the heart of the countryside the sea is never far away; the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic or the Ionian are within a 30 minute drive.

This particular trullo appealed to us as it is in a very quiet and private spot; set in its own olive grove extending to 1.5 hectares, it is only 3 km from the centre of Alberobello so easily reached by car or bike. Having already been extended in the 1950s, we were able to create a bigger home than is normally permitted. Retaining the original trulli and demolishing and rebuilding the 1950s extension, we created a spacious 4-bedroom, 2 bathroom home with ample living space and a beautiful swimming pool. The pool is visible from the house but set slightly apart and surrounded by dry stone walls in keeping with the surrounding countryside.

Although Alberobello has a particularly charming historical centre with some excellent restaurants, the nearby towns of Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Ostuni provide a wider choice of restaurants and interests. Each has its own character with charming old parts and interesting architecture.

What makes this villa unique

Trullo LIna is big enough for 2 familes to share or 3 generations of 1 family. Whilst holidays with friends and family are fun, there are moments when we all need to get way from each other.

The extensive private land surrounding Trullo Lina means that it is tranquil but not isolated. Children (with superivision if they are very young) are free to explore and climb in the olive trees whilst the parents relax by the pool. The land is a nature lover's paradise; birds Iizards, butterflies and wild flowers are in abundance. Depending on the season, cherries, apples, pears, walnuts almonds and figs can be picked from the trees andt wild rocket, asparagus and herbs can be gathered from the land

There are lots of private corners where one can escape, to sit and read or jusr relax under the shade of an olive tree.

Beautiful and stylish Trullo in peaceful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of four friends who appreciate having our own rooms and enjoy peace and quiet. We had a very enjoyable week at Trullo Lina. The interior has been tastefully renovated to a high standard and outside there is a very pleasant pool area and plenty of land to wander about in and pick delicious cherries. The kitchen is well equipped and stocked up with essentials. Louise and Anna Maria were easy to contact and friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Definitely recommended.

Delightful restored Trulli Near Alberobello

  • 5 of 5

The property is an extended and beautifully and expertly restored Trulli about 5-10 minutes drive form the lovely town of Alberobello. The finish in the property is excellent, a well equipped kitchen and plenty of space for our family of 5. The outside space is fantastic with large areas of paved patio to several sides of the residence and plenty of places to sit in the sun or shade. The large covered terrace is particularly pleasant. The pool is a great size and has loads of space around it. The location in its own olive groves is very peaceful and relaxing. A car is vital. The property was very clean and well prepared on our arrival and the meet and greet without problems.Communication with the owner was easy and prompt. Very happy to recommend this property.

Lovely family holiday

  • 4 of 5

We had a very good week in Trullo Lina, the property was well maintained and comfortable. The outdoor space was well laid out and the interior lovely and cool so no need for air conditioning. We were a party of 9 adults and were very comfortable, the owner was a bit worried about the water with so many of us (is delivered in a tank) but we did not have any problems. We had a pretty lazy time so didn't venture far but had good meals in Locorotunda, Monopoli and Alberobello and a great visit to the caves. The towns themselves are also very pretty in the centre. The driving was a bit hairy particularly in Monopoli so not for the nervous, you will definitely need a car though for this property. The nearest supermarket was a bit limited but had all the basics, there is a nice butcher in town and alimentari, I would recommend getting a map before going to Alberobello to look for the shops as we spent quite a long time wandering(very happily) through the streets without finding them. There is a great market on Thursday morning. We had a few minor issues but Louise was happy to answer queries and sort out. I would be happy to recommend this property to family and friends and may well visit again.

Beautifully relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We as a family of 8 stayed at Trulli Lina for a week at the beginning of July. Louise the owner was great at communication from the start of my enquiry right up to the detailed directions on how to reach the trulli.

It's quite simply stunning. The trulli is spotless and is extremely well equipped - one of the best kitchens I've used in 15 years of property rentals throughout Italy. In fact it's well equipped throughout. ( my only bug bear would be to have extra pillows). The pool is divine and the seating areas surrounding the trulli are just beautiful.

It is remote however, so best to use coordinates on sat nav for accuracy.

The neighbouring towns and villages are gorgeous, with some of the friendliest people I've met in Italy. The food served in local restaurants is excellent.

We would love to return.

Beautiful trullo, fantastic setting, hugely relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Trullo Lina is magnificent!

We have just returned from a week’s stay (end of June 2016) as a family of four (with a four-year-old and a nearly two-year-old) plus one set of grandparents who joined for a couple of days. The house, grounds and location were perfect for us to have a relaxing and enjoyable time.

The trullo is very well configured and in excellent condition. The decoration, finishes and furniture are all to a high standard playing on the character of the building but also modern enough to make it feel fresh and appealing. All four bedrooms are of a good size and comfortable (two with double beds).

The location is beautifully rural and tranquil whilst being close to the conveniences of Alberobello (a very pleasant country lane drive) and within easy driving distance of the coast and Puglia’s various attractions. It took us about an hour to travel from/to Brindisi airport. A car is essential!

The pool is large and was a good temperature in the near 30oC outside heat. Our boys would happily spend all day in it! It was clean, tidy and safe (being fenced / gated). The surrounding gardens have matured since the website photos were taken and were very well maintained. The shaded terrace areas are a welcome retreat for lunch etc. The surrounding olive groves and fields are fun to walk around and we were able to pick cherries and pears.

We were made to feel welcome (local cheese and wine already in the fridge!) and would have loved to have stayed much longer!

Trulli lina Alberrobello, un havre de paix

  • 5 of 5

Trullo Lina sits in its own private olive grove, just 3 km from Alberobello, on the edge of the Valle d'Itria in the heart of Puglia. Alberobello is a UNESCO world heritage site famous for its trulli houses with their conical shaped roofs.

The Valle d'Itria is scattered with quaint white towns of Greek origin; Locorotondo which sits on a hill top inside its round walls, Cisternino and Ostuni. Martina Franca is renowned for its Baroque architecture, summer music festival and chic boutiques,

Le Grotte di Castellana are a short drive away. These stunningly beautiful caves are the deepest in Europe, and a welcome respite from the heat on a sweltering day in July/August!

Matera famous for its 'Sassi' - rock dwellings, and the location for the film 'The Passion of Christ' is an easy day trip, as is Lecce, often referred to as the 'Florence of the South' due to its ornate baroque architecture.

The Salento to the South is blessed with a stunning coast line where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet at the quaint seaside town of Santa Maria di Leuca at the tip of the 'heel' of Italy. On the Adriatic coast, picturesque Otranto overlooks a pretty harbour. It has a charming old town with typical narrow winding streets, and is steeped in history having been Italy's main port on the East coast for over 1,000 years. The church has a beautiful mosaic map of the Mediterranean whilst a glass cabinet displays the skulls of the hundreds of Catholic martyrs slain by the Otoman invaders in Medieval times.

On the other side, a stretch of the Ionian coast is known locally as 'the Maldives' due to the white sand and clear limpid sea; and not far away is Porto Selvaggio - a national park and area of outstanding beauty with sea caves and coral reefs.

Gallipoli (meaning 'beautiful town' in Greek) is a working fishing port which sits on an island in the Ionian Sea and is connected by a bridge to the mainland and new town. The picturesque historic centre is surrounded by high walls which were built to protect it against attacks from the sea. In the summer, bars and restaurants make the most of the island's ramparts, looking out to sea.

The rural landscape of the interior is dotted with unspoilt towns and villages and is home to many vineyards housed in the historic masserias World-class wines can be tasted and purchased. There are also many 'agriturismi' where you can escape the midday sun and enjoy a long lazy lunch made with fresh local produce.

Being blessed with beautiful countryside and coastline, a rich history, and world class cuisine Puglia has all the attributes for an unforgettable holiday.
