For 50 years Hawthorn Cottage has welcomed couples to historic Somesville and Acadia National Park. Hawthorn Cottage shares with our home and Juniper Cottage two beautifully landscaped acres fringed with wild blueberry bushes. The lawn is open and sunny, with gardens and shade trees near the cottage and a shaded deck for observing Somesville's resident eagles and ospreys. You can walk to our library, repertory theater, museum, and to the ocean or Somes Pond for a swim. Rental weeks run Saturday to Saturday, except for JUNE, when we can be flexible.

Ken and I are retired art teacher and theater costume designer. We have owned Hawthorn Cottage since 1980, taking over from Chauncey Somes, whose ancestors settled the island. We have especially enjoyed sharing our love of Mount Desert Island and Acadia with our guests all these years. We hope you will join our large number of returning guests in savoring the best of Maine.

Cozy, very clean, wonderful owners
My husband and I stayed at Hawthorne cottage the first week of October. We absolutely loved it. Fully equipped, very clean, charming. It's nice to be on the quiet side of the island. Marilee and Ken are so nice and very helpful with any questions or problems that might arise. We would definitely rent this cottage again.
We so appreciate your kind words and look forward to sharing more suggestions for special places in Acadia when you return.
Oasis for peaceful reflection away from the crowds
Perfect setting, quiet and away from the noise and trafffic of Bar Harbor. The owners live nearby and were very friendly and welcoming. After a long day of hiking the sometimes crowded trails, this little piece of paradise is the perfect place to relax.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments. We, too, love the uncrowded special places in Acadia and are glad to share them with our guests.
We really enjoyed our stay and Marilee was so welcoming. Definitely. A 5 star.
Cottage was very clean and comfortable. Very quiet and relaxing and close enough to Acadia, Bar Harbor and other places we wanted to see in the MDI area. Marilee was great to work with. We will recommend the cottage to others coming to the area.
Even with the challenges that come with very hot east coast weather this summer, we have appreciated the expressions of comfort in Hawthorn Cottage.
Thanks for this nice review, and we hope you make it back soon.
Great little cottage!
This was the first time we have stayed on “the quiet side” of the island and we loved it. The cottage is away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor, yet convenient to any place on the island. It was immaculately clean and adequately stocked with essential linens and kitchen items. Best of all it had the most comfortable bed I have ever had in a rental unit! While we usually visit Mt. Desert in the Fall, we decided this year to go in August. Too many people! But the location of this cottage makes it a perfect solution to the crowd issue. We probably will never stay on the busy side of the island again. We highly recommend this two-person cottage.
We are delighted you are so appreciative of our cottage. Being nestled in Somesville is a delight we are more than glad to share with our guests. Thank you!
This Hawthorne cottage was the most quaint and cute cottage. Enjoyed staying here so very much. Anything you could ever need was readily available. The bed was gorgeous, and extremely comfortable. Marilee and Ken were very welcoming soon after we arriving. I hope to return to this cottage in the not too distant future. I would recommend this adorable place to any couple or single person.
Thank you for your thoughtful words, and, yes, do come for more adventures.
Absolutely loved our stay in this cottage, it was clean and well stocked, with fresh flowers in every room. Comfy bed and very quiet, yet close to all activities on the Island. Marilee was very helpful with any questions we had, I would highly recommend a stay here.
Sharing a bit of our island with our guests gives us such pleasure. Thank you for expressing your appreciation. Hope to see you again.
Somesville was the first village settled on Mt. Desert Island in the 18th century by Abraham Somes. It is virtually surrounded by Acadia National Park and sits at the head of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the east coast of the United States. The best thing about Somesville is its central location on the island, allowing equidistant drives to Bar Harbor's shops and restaurants, Northeast Harbor's historic summer homes and village, and the rustic charms of Southwest Harbor and the 'Quietside'. The island is alive with music, art, lobster and blueberry festivals, and friendly helpful people.
