Beautifully renovated 'Maison Maitre' ideal for larger groups or more than one family holidaying together. The property was built in the mid-19th Century at the height of the local Camembert industry. It still retains the original Fromagerie within the grounds and is surrounded by open countryside.
Set in approximately 1 acre, the house benefits from having no immediate neighbours, whilst still being conveniently located for access to the local boulangerie in the mornings!
Our Environmental Policy helps us minimise our impacts on the environment.
The house is set over 3 floors, with a large lounge, dining room and kitchen on the ground floor providing plenty of room for entertaining, and all rooms in the house are double-aspect, making the most of the delightful views. There are 5 large double bedrooms, 2 twin bedrooms, a large bathroom with roll-top bath and shower, and on the top floor a further shower room. There is also a separate cloakroom on the ground floor.
Free high speed Wifi throughout the property.
In keeping with this history a range of local products, many organic, are available for purchase from La Poterie, including cider, poire, honey and pate.
The local area: St Evroult Notre Dame du Bois is a charming village on the edge of a forest in the heart of the Orne, Normandy. It has a large boating lake, tennis courts, ancient Abbey ruins, campsite with mini-golf, as well as an excellent restaurant and one further café, offering lake views and good value food. The shop in the village sells most things and features a traditional boulangerie. Nearby Ferte Fresnel has a range of shops, a bank, chemist, garage and excellent restaurant.
In 1998 Luc Besson shot scenes for Joan of Arc in the village using the atmospheric abbey ruins as its backdrop. Besson is said to have fallen in love with the area whilst filming and subsequently purchased a chateau in the nearby village of Trinitie des Laitiers. More recently he filmed 'The Family' in the village and nearby Gacé featuring Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro.
The lake in St Evroult has a fishing, pedalos and swimming in the summer, plus bouncy castles and mini golf etc. The Foret de St Evroult has plenty of lovely walks and opportunities for horse riding and mountain biking.
Things to do: Throughout the year a range of events take place including food festivals, local fetes, night markets and music festivals. In L’Aigle the 3rd largest market in France takes place every Tuesday morning with clothes, gifts and a wide range of local produce is available. The French National Stud at Haras du Pin is worth a visit for its grand architecture, history and a chance to see the free horse processions and promenades, which take place on Thursdays. The village of Camembert and its museum are nearby. It’s also easy to visit the wonderful beach at Deauville and local fetes, Zoos, and chateau for the day. For great nightlife, shopping, restaurants and architecture visit Rouen about an hour away or Paris which is about 90mins on the train.

We fell in love with La Poterie and bought it despite it being in need of significant restoration after a house purchase in the UK fell through. We had a great time renovating the beautiful house and discovering its rich history.
The house and its history: Within the grounds of La Poterie lies the traditional Normandy colombage longhouse that the Hubert family originally lived in. This was their home from the 18th century onwards prior to making their fortune producing Camembert cheese. The original Fromagerie, where the cheeses were allowed to air, still stands in the grounds and is of regional importance. By the 1850s, when the cheese making business had sufficiently developed the family were able to build the two story Maison Maitre called ‘La Poterie’ within the grounds of their garden. This became home to several generations of the Hubert family until it was found to be too small. With profits up from the Camembert business, the family was able to remove the original roof and add an additional story to the house in the 1930’s to form the grand Maison Maitre that stands today!
Good afternoon,
As promised, a few more comments after our nice stay at La Poterie.
We had a pleasant Christmas family holiday at your house.
The weather was miserable, cold, wet and windy, but being used to Normandie and Bretagne that was no surprise. That did not prevent us from walking for hours in the many (totally soaked !) forests around.
The house is nicely decorated and what is great is that it feels like a house where people live, not just a place set-up for rentals only. We very rapidly felt at home.
The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen well equiped.
We managed to keep the house warm with just central heating and fire in the dining room, without help of the electrical stoves.
I appreciated the fact there were so many bikes available, although we did not have chance to ride them.
The house is big, and the rooms spacious, for us (party of 7 adults and 8 children (including babys)), the ground floor was too small. It was a bit difficult to sit at the same time in the dining room or sitting room. Also there was a lack of space for storage in the kitchen. Overall it was well equiped: big fridge, washing machine, dishwasher, tv, ....The rooms all don't have blinds or good curtains, so we had to darken the room. Matrasses are very good, the house is very good isolated, despite the rumorous nights with baby's we had a good night sleep. The contact with the owner was very friendly.
The area includes forests and lakes with activities for all the family. La Poterie is just 15 minutes drive from the town of L'Aigle, which has the 3rd largest market in France as well as all facilities including a large leisure centre with swimming pool. The house is 45 minutes from the gorgeous seaside resort of Deauville (although allow longer just in case), and just over an hour from Paris by train.
This is a perfect base for exploring the wide range of activities on offer on the edge of the Suisse-Normand, everything from Mountain Biking, Horse riding, canoeing, go carting and golf are nearby, with the region characterised by rolling landscapes and numerous villages and towns to discover. Many of these have excellent and affordable restaurants and bars to visit too.
The picturesque lake in the village has a small beach, pedalos, swimming and fishing. Minigolf is also available in addition to the numerous opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding in the Forest.
Other Activities: Mini-golf, pedalos.
