The Depot at Mad Mt. Lodging is the latest idea from my creative spouse who never ceases to amaze me. His creativity and skill is brought out again in this project that we wish to share with our guests. Tim is the designer and builder and I am the maker and cleaner-upper of the sawdust and paint splatters, but together we have fun! Here we are in the snow with our dog, Sophie.
Tim purchased this Studio in 2003
Why Tim chose Deadwood
The Black Hills is a beautiful place to call home and raise our kids. I, Dawn, am a transplant from the Northwest around the Seattle area and Tim has lived here most of his life. We really enjoy the beauty that our Creator has made and we like to share our little bit of heaven with our many visitors.
What makes this Studio unique
The property is so conveniently located to all the many sights and activities in the Black Hills, we are sure that it will offer easy traveling as well as a comfortable and clean place to rest and relax. The cool, quiet nights in the summer and the beautiful sunrises in the winter become the envy of those living in Rapid City whose weather drive them into the "Hills!"

Clean & cozy space for 1-2 people with stunning views
The property is adorable! Fully stocked with necessities, clean & comfortable with a lovely view of the Black Hills. Charming decor abound and the bed and linens where uber comfortable. Approx 6 miles from civilization, but the drive is beautiful. Only issue was the space was cold despite utilizing the partially heated floors and wall-mounted heating until. The space does not have rugs or carpet, so much of the floor was cold and the mounted heater really only warmed a portion of the room.
What a great place. Perfect location. Lodging was perfect. Plenty of room. Love the
"depot" decorating. Pizza place south a bit was great to pick up and bring home. Very serene. The pup (and us) enjoyed the walk up the hill (Mad Mountain?). We will return!!Thanks!!
This is an awesome property. From the moment we walked in we felt at home. It has absolutely anything you would need. And location is great. A gas station and convenience store close by. And of course the view is magnificent! We can’t wait to plan another stay here. Highly recommend The Depot for a get away!
Very clean and lots of extras we didn’t expect.
We came came prepared having stayed at VRBO properties in the past. It was great to have the basic food extras. Very clean and comfortable. We have already told others about the property and will definitely use if we are back in future.
Nothing else needed
Our stay was absolutely perfect. The finishing touches to this studio were so welcoming and perfect - we absolutely loved it! I think the only thing we would have also enjoyed was a small table outside to enjoy our meals - trail riding right out your back door and plenty of things to go and see! Lovely owners that were a pleasure to meet - there when you needed them! We enjoyed our stay greatly and slept like babies - the bed was amazing as well - Thank You Tim & Dawn!!!
The Depot, this rental unit, is a throw-back to the time when the train system ran from Lead and the Homestake Gold Mine to the small town of Galena right past this location. In the time when buildings were built against each other with differing styles, owner's preference, and a wide range of purposes, this location recreates the feel of a Main Street in an old western town. We have added all the modern necessities, like "indoor plumbing," but have recreated the vintage feel to share a bit of history with each of our guests.
The sunrise will warm your hearts and the quiet evenings with the the bright stars will fill you with awe for our Creator. The roar of the motorcycles during Bike Week or the vintage cars during Kool Deadwood Nights can be appreciated from the front porch which will have front row views. We hope, that as you explore our little bit of heaven, that you will find the location convenient, the views spectacular, the history humbling, the people kind, and the food and entertainment fantastic. But most of all, the comfort this rental unit will provide you, at the end of a busy day, a restful place for you to relax while you are here!
Historic towns of Deadwood and Lead are popular locations to visit and just minutes north of the rental location. Mount Rushmore and the towns of Custer, Hill City and Keystone are great experiences and directly south of the rental location within an hour drive. Sturgis is a famous town for the motorcycling history and it is about 25 minutes away.
There are many attractions to entertain all types of visitors from live plays at Black Hills Playhouse, south toward Custer, to live concerts and festivals throughout the year in Deadwood and Lead. History comes to life with the "Trial of Jack McCall" and the mining museum and tours in Lead, as well as experiencing the small town feel with a stroll on Main Street in either Lead or Deadwood. Wildlife, reptiles, and farm animals can be viewed with a trip through Custer State Park, Reptile Gardens and Bear Country or Old MacDonald's Farm, for a few suggestions.
Dining and gaming can be enjoyed in various locations throughout Deadwood where the two can be found with many options. Red Water Kitchen in Spearfish and Alpine Inn in Hill City are personal favorites outside of the Deadwood and Lead area.
The Mickelson Trail offers biking, horseback riding, and hiking for a few minutes or many miles, depending on your schedule, with great scenery and wildlife like deer and turkeys. Bike rentals are available in Deadwood right along the trail for your fun and convenience. In the winter, the Mickelson Trail becomes part of the snowmobile trail system managed by the SD Game, Fish and Parks department.
A drive through Spearfish Canyon is a local favorite as the views are so great throughout the year with the changing seasons, an experience which never disappoints a person. Also, this canyon offers hiking and rock climbing areas as well as great fishing locations for either fly or cast fishing.
Speaking of fishing, there are a number of lakes in the area that support warm weather fishing and ice fishing both as well as swimming, boating, floating, and boat rentals. Some smaller lakes are stocked and maintained by the SD Game, Fish and Parks department for accessibility and parking.
The Fourth of July firework celebration display is offered in Belle Fourche, Lead, and Rapid City. As a rule, no individuals are allowed to ignite fireworks within the Black Hills National Forest, so these displays are popular for all ages! Arrive early for a decent parking spot and enjoy the holiday activities and fare until the display begins.
Winter snow skiing is found at Terry Peak, an easy drive from the rental location. Snowmobiling is another popular sport in the area with over 350 miles of groomed trails and snow machine rental providers in the area.
