Woodcroft, located in the village of Horgabost on the island of Harris in the archipelago of 'The Outer Hebrides' on the west coast of Scotland, is situated within walking distance of beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches.
Until 1957 it was an ordinary Hebridean croft. That year it was taken over by a couple, who slowly turned the place into the unique place it appears today.
A huge garden was planted in the 14 acre croft by one man over a period of 45 years. It is the perfect place to stay as a base for exploring the island and all it's possibilities. If you arrive in June-July, you can experience the blooming 'machair'.
The house has 2 large bedrooms on the ground floor, 1 small bedroom on 1st floor with a private toilet, a living room with views over the village, a large kitchen with all modern facilities and a bathroom with bath and shower. The house has oil central heating and an open coal fire in the living room. There is wireless internet connection as well as a TV and a dvd player. NO pets allowed.
You are welcome to phone up for further information.
Loved the tranquility, the beaches, the views, the sunsets, the cleanliness of the cottage, the wild life, the children running wild on the beaches with hardly anyone on them, the mountains, the eagles, Croft 36 banana muffins, the Anchorage fish and chips, comfortable beds, the wild mint at the top of the lane, the friendly faces of everyone we met, the ideal location woodcroft has to enjoy all of these things, and finding somewhere that grabbed my sole and kept a piece, so I'll have to return some day to feel whole again.
Woodcroft.is a comfortable, well located and well organised holiday cottage. We visited other parts of Harris and Lewis including Callanish and the coastline around Uig but Horgabost in the south west of Harris with its stupendous coastal scenery and wildlife was the best place to stay in our view.
We watched lapwings defending their chicks against gulls in the marshland west of Northton - unforgettable. The beaches are probably even better than those on Corsica. The Temple Cafe at Northton is great and the Co-op at Leverburgh is good for supplies.
We will return. We left some birdseed in the containers by living room windows - we couldn't find black seeds to buy for your visiting goldfinches.
Warm and welcoming with all mod cons, within easy reach of stunning scenery, great walking, beaches, wildlife, especially birds and of course plenty of sheep. Not to far to get supplies and /or to eat out, fabulous seafood.
Woodcroft was a warm, comfortable and well equipped holiday cottage. Woodcroft was located close to some clean sandy beaches and allowed us to tour both Harris and Lewis, places we last visited in 88. The cottage was also in a location that was good for wildlife spotting, walking and was a great location for both landscape and wildlife photography. We enjoyed our stay.
There are smaller eateries scattered around the island.
(Please note that supermarkets and other shops are closed on Sundays and other religious holidays.)
