Sat at the edge of Argyll Forest Park in the Cowal peninsula at the foot of the magical Puck's Glen, Stravaigin Lodge is a self-catering Scottish log cabin just ten minutes north of Dunoon and within walking distance of Benmore Botanical Gardens and Loch Eck.

One of just 18 privately owned lodges, collectively known as Lamont Lodges, Stravaigin Lodge is a perfect base for exploring any number of gloriously tranquil glens and riverside walks. Or if you're looking for something a little more adventurous the magnificent Beinn Mhor is just up the road while the surrounding forests, rivers and lochs are the perfect place for fishing, mountain biking or quad biking.

We stayed here ourselves for my 40th then were lucky enough to see a for sale sign the following year....the rest is history.

What makes this cabin unique

The lodge could not be in a better location. Just a hop over on the ferry from Glasgow but already it feels miles away from the city. From the lodge reaching the Arrochar Alps or Otter Ferry is a short drive. The scenery and wildlife is what makes this place so attractive to me and partner Catherine.

Okay but

Very well placed for exploration of the Trossachs park and the lochs .

The cabin is well equipped but the furniture and carpets a bit tired and seems to suffer from damp , bedding was damp on arrival and the whole cabin needed to be warmed up to feel homeley.

The main bugbear is electricity, which has to be paid for in addition to the rental, one weeks stay cost a additional £ 45 over the rent, the only source of heating is from storage and convection radiators and an electric fire , there is no double glazing, this leaves you with no other means to stay warm or do washing ,and I can see it would be very expensive in colder months, a butane gas or wood burner fire would help, and maybe solar for water ,

No wifi and data signal is non existent , this really needs to be brought up to date.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to hear you weren't as happy with the place as you could have been. Firstly, the issue of dampness. Was this really the case? Or was it just very cold? Sometimes in winter when you arrive the bedding does feel as though it is very slightly damp but is just extremely cold. In any case, it shouldn't have been cold OR damp. I have instructed the cleaners to pre-heat the lodge since mid-September when it started getting cold so they have obviously not done this. I can only apologise. With regards to electricity, there really is not much I can do about this. This is the rate at which the lodges are supplied. Likewise double glazing is not much use either because these are log cabins and the heat is lost through the walls so quickly. Two or three of the eighteen lodge owners have had their lodges double-glazed and found that it does not make much difference to the amount of electricity they use, unfortunately. As regards doing washing, I'm not sure I understand. There is a washing machine which runs on electricity and is plumbed into the water supply and is completely independent from the heating. If you are referring to washing dishes then there is a water heater. The switch for which is clearly marked in the kitchen. We have considered a wood burning stove in the lodge. One other lodge has one but they do not rent theirs out. We decided, since we let our lodge out that it would simply be too dangerous to have a wood burning stove for guests to use. Besides, our current insurance premium, due to the lodges being made of wood, stipulates that no open flames should be within 3 metres of the lodge (and not inside at all - hence the battery powered tea lights). Lastly, wi-fi. Nowhere did we say we had wi-fi. However, we are in the process of getting a phone line connected and internet with it. This process was started many months ago, as long ago as January in fact. Openreach, however, are being slow to get things sorted. It should be complete with wi-fi before the end of the year. So they tell me. In any case, I do take your points on board and those that can be dealt with I shall attempt to fix immediately. However, I feel I must state that everything about our holiday rental property is reflected in the price. Other lodges in Cowal are hired out for twice our price. Thanks nevertheless for booking a stay at our lodge

Fantastic relaxing stay!

The lodge was a brilliant stay. We went in October so weather was cooler but the lodge was warm and cosy. It was equiped with everything you need so felt like a home from home. It's well furnished and cleanliness was of an excellent standard. Our children loved it and it gaves us some great family time together. The walks around were great and being able to wash and dry clothes when we had been caught in the rain was great! Definately will be returning!

beautiful location

Stayed here with my husband and our greyhound austen. Had a fantastic week. The lodge was spotless and very well equipped. The walks around pucks Glenn were amazing and right on the doorstep of the lodge. We took a ferry across to the Isle of bute and had a lovely day out, also spent a day at otters Cove. To many things to mention but overall a beautiful lodge, everyday a red squirrel came and one day a deer walked right past the back of lodge. Returning this year and looking forward to it.

Great little getaway

I stayed at the lodge with my friends for 3 nights. The lodge was very well presented and well equipped. Very clean, very quiet. Loved watching the bats outside at night. Only complaint was the weather and the resultant midges. Gordon was very helpful. Highly recommended
