Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Wick - North Winds

Self-Catering Cottage, Sleeps Two Adults and Two Children

North Winds was newly built in 2007 and is situated in quiet countryside with views overlooking the Pentland Firth, Stroma and the Orkney Islands.

The two bedroom modern bungalow contains a double room and twin room (with bunk beds) and is ideal for a couple or small families as it can sleep a maximum off two adults and two children.

The newly built two bedroom cottage is built to a very high standard and well insulated making it very easy to heat and stay warm. The house was redecorated in October 2013 to give it a fresh look and the decoration throughout is contemporary, light and airy feel.

The highlight of the property has to be the impressive Dining Sun Room with a large glazed gable end window giving panoramic views of the nearby country side and views over Stroma and the Orkney Islands. The dining room table seats up to 4 - 6 people where you can have your morning breakfast enjoy stylish evening dining or simply relax in the tub chairs provided.

The compact kitchen is as you would expect from a newly built house comes fully equipped with hob, oven/grill, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer and has plenty of cupboard space. The kitchen contains all necessary utensils and we are sure you will enjoy cooking in it.

The main bedroom is comfortably furnished with a double bed and large built-in mirrored wardrobe and is equipped with a flat screen TV for those who enjoy watching TV in bed. The small twin bedroom contains L Shaped pine bunk beds to maximise the use of the room and a small wardrobe making it ideal for kids although the bottom bunk bed may be suitable for an adult.

The main shower room is once again contemporary decorated with ceramic floor tiles and fully equipped with an electric shower and heated towel rail.

The lounge floor is finished with real oak flooring (as is the dining sun room) and contains a leather sofa, two seats and large flat screen TV and DVD player. There is plenty of light in this room as it contains an external set of French doors and double doors leading into the dining sun room.

Included in the price of your stay is water, electricity, heating (storage heaters), bed linen and towels.

There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer located by the built-in cupboard in the main entrance vestibule.

We are sure you will agree that the house offers a high quality accommodation with a very clean, modern, exquisite look and you will have many nights comfortable sleep in the peace and quietness which the location offers.

The house is adjacent to Burnside Cottage but is situated in a way where you have your own privacy and there is a separate driveway leading into the house with secure parking / turning space outside the house.

Outside the lounge French doors open onto a small patio area where you can enjoy sitting outside with table and chairs. The dining room also has an external door where you can sit and enjoy views off the ever changing Pentland Firth and if interested you will see various ships making their way through this channel of water between the Atlantic and North Sea.

We have had a very peaceful time in this beautiful little cottage. Weather was not too good - very foggy for a couple of days but we are used to it. We have really enjoyed this unuique spot and hope to return for 2 weeks next time! Thank you for our break and the contents of the welcome basket!

North Winds - Stunning

  • 5 of 5

Well not sure where to start! I stayed at North Winds from Saturday 2nd July to Saturday 9th July 2016 with my wife and son. On arrival we were greeted by Ethel and given a warm welcome as well as a tour of the cottage. There was a very generous welcome basket with some delicous local produce which was greatly appreciated.

The Cottage - spectacular views, spectacular scenery and really well appointed with all the mod cons you would require as well as being very clean and nicely decorated with comfortable furniture. Favourite spot was the dining room with huge windows and spectacular views, a great place to eat as a family and chill out with a glass of wine and a book in the comfy chairs. The kithchen is excellend, plenty of prep space and everything you need to cook as well as a large fridge freezer. The main bedroom is excellent with a large wall mounted TV and plenty of space for clothes in the wardrobe or drawers. The living room is very comfotable as well. All in all the cottage was perfect and was exactly what we were looking for!

This was my first visit to the far north of Scotland and North winds was an excellent base to visit Orkney, John O'Groats, Dunnet Headm Duncansby Head, Mey, Wick and Thurso. Beaches are stunning and the peace and quiet is perfect!

North Winds is somewhere I will definitely return to again and again! Thanks Ethel and David for a fantastic week

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

North Winds is exactly what it claims to be - a modern, well-appointed, well equipped holiday cottage, easily accessible and yet peaceful and quiet. But it has that something "extra" that turns it into a home, a place where within minutes of arrival you feel comfortable and relaxed. The welcome hamper full of local produce and with its two bottles of wine helps, of course, but there is something about the sheep feeding in the field just outside the living-room window and the magnificent view of the ever-changing Pentland Firth over to Stroma and the Orkney Isles that makes you think "This is it!".

We loved the ready access to the local towns, Thurso and Wick, the natural wonders of Dunnet Head and Duncansby Stacks and the glorious sands of the north coast. With cycling, walking and visiting we ran out of time and were unable to take the handy ferry over to Orkney. This and many other features will have to wait for our next visit. Thank you for giving us the chance to stay in such a beautiful spot in such a lovely home.

Car: necessary

The rural area of Gills situated on the far north coast of Scotland is the ideal base for exploring the county of Caithness or arranging day trips to the Orkney Isles. The globally famous John o’Groats (the end of the road) is only a five minutes drive away and the historic Castle of Mey (Queen Mother’s former residence) is also around five minutes away and we are literally only a few minutes away from the Gills Bay Car and Passenger Ferry. Also John o’Groats Ferries offer day tours to Orkney for passengers only and wildlife cruises.

The Castle of Mey holiday home to the late Queen Mother is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area and is situated only 3 miles west of Gills. Visitors can take a tour around the castle, enjoy the beautiful gardens, the new Animal Centre along with the Castle Shop and Tearooms.

To the east of Gills is the globally famous John o’Groats (the end of the road) where you can visit local craft shops, have lunch in the cafés, take wildlife cruises or just simply explore the shore line and take in the breath taking scenery. Duncansby Head is where the Atlantic meets the North Sea with its lighthouse and views southwards to the Stacks of Duncansby and the area provides beautiful walks.

West of Gills is Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on the British mainland, an area of strategic importance to the Navy in both world wars. Just to the west of the headland is the fantastic Dunnet Beach and sand-dunes. This is a mecca for surfers as is the nearby Thurso East beach – although the water is a little on the chilly side! Behind Dunnet is the forest with its walks and abundant wildlife and provides shelter on particularly windy and rainy days.

The nearest main towns are Wick and Thurso, both located around the same distance from Gills Bay (approximately 18 miles) or 20 minutes by car. Both towns have decent shopping facilities with Wick having a major Tescos store, petrol station and retail park. Both towns also have the choice of other supermarkets including Lidl and Co-operative along with various other unique shops.

Further west heading out of Thurso you can take excellent day trips as the north west coast road takes in some increasingly spectacular scenery with some fantastic beaches at Melvich, Strathy, Bettyhill, Armadale, The Kyle of Tongue and Durness.

The Orkney Islands are another major attraction to the area as Orkney provides many historic sites and places of interest including the famous Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae, the Standing Stones of Stenness, Scapa Flow, the Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel.

Our recommendation and the easiest option for getting too Orkney would be a day trip / tour from John o’Groats. John o’Groats Ferries operate a passenger ferry (only a 40 minute crossing) from John o’Groats to South Ronaldsay where a coach picks you up and takes you to all the places of interest on the Orkney mainland.

For those that wish to do their own tours can take the car ferry crossing from Gills Bay to St Margaret’s hope which offers you a more convenient alternative than driving to Scrabster for the NorthLink Ferries service to Stromnes. Pentland Ferries is the operator from Gills Bay who operate the catarmaran MV Pentalina which you will see on a daily basis when viewing out The Dining Sun Room window at North Winds.
