This place is drop-dead gorgeous: on the top floor of an historic palazzo on the Grand Canal in which Lord Byron once lived. There are venetian plaster and silk wall coverings, beautiful antiques and Oriental rugs, interesting and eclectic art. The two bedrooms are spacious, with lots of closet and drawer space, and very comfortable beds -- one a king, the other with two twins. The bathrooms are well-designed -- one with walk-in shower, the other with a full jacuzzi, and the kitchen is new, modern and well equipped. But all of that pales before the view -- right on the Grand Canal, facing the San Polo vaporetto stop, with a view of the sunset each evening. Once you start watching the continuous action, it is hard to tear yourself away.......
Which is good, because there is one major drawback: the apartment and that view is accessed only by four very steep flights of stairs. Once you get back from a day of walking Venice, you think twice about going out again for dinner. Which brings us to the next relatively minor drawback: television viewing is limited to a few pretty bad local Italian station. No world news -- which is increasingly important these days.
The palazzo is located in San Stephano, surrounded by upscale art and decor shops, wonderful small tavernas, and a number of food shops. Both the Rialto Bridge and San Marco are a short walk away, but you are sequestered from the hoards of tourists.
All in all -- this is a five-star experience.....minus one star for lack of elevator and cable tv. We were told that both were in the planning stage.
