About Carolyn Henry

I purchased Casa de Alta Loma in 2013 as the fulfillment of a life-long dream to live close to a beautiful beach in an environment that soothes the soul. I have lived in and around Santa Cruz for a decade now and finally decided on just the right spot (Live Oaks) and the perfect home (Alta Loma). I use it often and enjoy the environment tremendously. I love to entertain my friends and family from the East Coast at the beach house - they just cannot get over how idyllic life in Santa Cruz can be. For example, the Saturday morning Ukelele and sing-along down on the beach is a unique way to entertain grandchildren as well as adults. We usually get coffee at the Kind Grind (right there on the beach) and just listen. My 4 yr. old niece has played along with the crowd. (Don't expect skilled musicians but do expect friendliness and old time sing-along songs.)

I was born and raised outside of Boston, MA and relocated to the West Coast to work in the Software Industry. I hope you come enjoy the house and all it has to offer.

Why Carolyn Henry chose Santa Cruz

The location is ideal. You can hear the ocean, the sea lions, and the gulls but not the young neighboring renters who are right down on the beach. It's a 2 minute walk to the harbor where you will find a favorite restaurant -- Johnny's Harborside. It's a 4 minute walk to the beach which is wide and long. I often run the entire stretch from my beach down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk all on the sand (at low tide!). It's about 13 minutes walk to the east entrance of the famous Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Driving gets you to a lot of popular destinations: E.g., Shadowbrook restaurant in Capitola is 3 miles away and SF and Big Sur are each about an hour and a half away, in opposite directions.

What makes this house unique

Casa de Alta Loma is a great place to BBQ and I do often. The deck is pleasant and cool in the summer and a convenient place to dine.

The back cottage is fully supplied for two so a couple who wants a little privacy from the crowd have an ideal option. (I have personal friends who fit that bill.)

I use the internet too much but it is nice to be able to have access anywhere on the premises.

For whale watching or just ocean cruising, the nearby berthed Chardonnay II is a 70 foot luxury sailing yacht offering two hour to all day excursions including champagne brunches and sunset cruises.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We had an absolute ball at this home. We used it mostly as a base camp for doing day trips, which it is perfect for. It would be equally fun as a retreat to stay in and just hide from the world. It's waking distance to great beaches, the boardwalk and restaurants. The bedrooms were clean and spacious. The furniture practical for kids but also gave a fun beach house vibe. The enclosed back yard gave the kids a place to play without fear of them wandering off. We were able to cook with all the kitchen equipment and loved having a grill! We had a few bumps in the road ( caused by my family) and Carolyn was gracious and kind in helping work it out. You can't go wrong with this place. ”

This cottage is ideal for getting family together.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is close to the beach, which other reviewers have said. The extra separate room was perfect for our son, his wife, and their newborn. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything needed, and there was an abundance of towels. Carolyn was super to work with, and answered all questions immediately. The bedrooms were great and the living area spacious. The deck area is very beautifully landscaped and is pleasant to sit on. We loved the cottage and only wished we could move it all to Michigan, so we could go there more often.

Great Santa Cruz beach house!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I grew up in Santa Cruz, and we take our kids there every August for a week to stay at the beach. Twin Lakes is our family's favorite beach, and this beach house was one of the best we've stayed at. Plenty of room, deck is awesome, easy walking distance to restaurants and beach. Our teenage son loved the guest cottage. Would totally recommend!

Old needs updating

  • 2 of 5

Older home not updated, garbage disposal did not work, one bedroom was really an office no closet no dresser. Down stairs bathroom was old and very slippery. Outdoor space was nice but hot tub very old. Three minutes to beach was more like 5 or 6. Was charged for broken chair we did not brake $209.00 for a 5 year old chair, owner would not respond and VRBO did not help at all. Parking was also a problem but usual for this area. Would not rent this property again. Will go back to local agency never a problem in over 40 years of renting from them.

Owner's Response: Dear future renters, please know that I take these comments very seriously and make every effort to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay for all guests. This particular renter had an enjoyable stay and wrote very kind remarks in our guest book onsite, but changed their perspective after a dispute over a broken chair. While unfortunate, I wanted to quickly respond here and relay that this is my first review below 4/5 stars in many years (4+) of renting this property, the home is exactly as pictured on the site (some of the old tile lends to the cottage charm), and the walk to the beach was never advertised as 3 minutes (3 blocks). All in all, I hope you weigh this review with the others that are very favorable and 5 stars. Thank you!

Convenient, easy walk to the beach, restaurants, comfortable accommodations. Really enjoyed it.

  • 5 of 5

Great location. Walked to Santa Cruz boardwalk first time, drove the second. Really enjoyed our stay. Tasty lattes at Java Junction, great dinners at Crows Nest, all within easy walk. Beach was busy but not too crowded, really nice size and wave action. Water was terrific! Spent a lot of time at the beach.
