Why Gary & Barbara Stephens chose Kauai

Kapaa is centrally located with a 40 minute drive north to the end of the road, and another 40-minute drive to Poipu area or an hour's drive to the West end of the road at Polihale.

What makes this condo unique

Quiet, quiet, quiet. The sound of the surf and the trade winds rustling through the palm trees instantly soothes jangled nerves, and puts us in a state of wonderful relaxation.

Delightful Dream Destination

  • 5 of 5

3 middle-aged (67-68!) college girlfriends enjoyed one delightful week in Kauai. We had a beautiful view of the ocean, soothing sounds of the surf, and brisk ocean breezes every day and night in this corner 3rd floor condo. Although a little dated, we had every amenity we could have wanted. And though AC would have been nice at night, it was not really needed to stay cool and did not really detract from the comfort of the condo. It is well-situated to take advantage of sights and activities both north and south. The concierge services were excellent with one exception. She was not able to provide a contact for outrigger canoeing, which we were able to do quite easily.

Overall, we were delighted with our stay and would book it again!

Thank you Gary and Barbara

Comfortable paradise

  • 5 of 5

The property is exactly as advertised. The beds are extremely comfortable (a big plus) and the kitchen is well stocked with equipment and utensils. The condo is very clean (another big plus) and extra bath towels as well as beach towels are provided. The location is perfect and waking up to the sunrise over the ocean every morning is heaven. This condo is a top floor view property. Morning coffee on the lanai looking at the ocean and feeling the refreshing breeze is the best and we took advantage of the opportunity to do this everyday. The owners are wonderful and do everything possible to ensure a positive stay. This is the third time we have stayed in this condo and continue to love it. We highly recommend this condo if you like being on the ocean and sleeping well in the lovely beach town of Kapaa. We definitely recommend morning walks on the bike/walking path along the water in front of the condo. Verde is the best Mexican restaurant with locally sourced and organic ingredients. It is within walking distance and located next to the Big Save (our favorite local grocery store). Comfortable paradise!

Great location - both on the island and in the Pono Kai Resort

  • 5 of 5

This condo is Gary and Barbara’s “home-away-from-home” that they make available so that others can experience Kaua’i. It includes many of those little things that one has in one’s own home and is quite comfortable. Gary and Barbara are welcoming and gracious hosts (albeit done from 1000s of mile away), providing valuable information and items to make one’s stay enjoyable, including boogie boards, fins, masks, beach chairs, beach towels, coolers, and more. Great guest/customer service.

The condo has a great location – both on the island and in the Pono Kai Resort. With no continuous highway circling the island, Kapa’a is centrally located for exploring to the north and to the south. Old Kapa’a Town – with its boutique shops and restaurants - is easy walking distance, literally starting on the next block. We like kalua pig and lau lau and found a great place for that at Pono Market just blocks away. Three supermarkets are within a mile to the south. More restaurants and shops are also to the south. We had a great fish dinner at the Hukilau Lanai. A miles-long walking/biking path along the shore is right outside the condo. Bike rentals are available next to the resort. Also just off the condo is a nice swimming beach when the surf is calm (surf can get rough, especially in winter). The resort's 12 hole putting green right off the shore was fun. A surfing lesson at Hanama'ulu Beach was also an experience to remember.

Being an end unit on the top floor of the most northern building in the resort affords it an expansive view of the shore not available in other units. Having been to the islands >10 times (4 to Kaua’i), we’ve done many of the typical things that tourists do. Being able to watch and hear the surf was a high priority for us, and we got to do that. We spent many hours just relaxing on the lanai, savoring the waves, relishing the turquoise sea, hearing the rustle of the palms in the breeze... a lovely tropical experience!

Great Condo and Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Gary and Barbara’s condo for 10 days and it exceeded our expectations. It had everything we needed to feel at home including beach towels, beach chairs, and even a cooler for you day trips. The Kapaa location is the best central location on the island for all your day trips to all parts of the island. The highlight was a full day trip on a catamaran along the spectacular Na Pali coastline. The Dolphin restaurant in Hanalei was our best dinner out. We loved cooking great seafood from the local market using the convenient grills at the Pona Kai resort. The Olympic Café within walking distance was good for calling in carry out lunch orders when hanging around the pools at the resort. Each day started with breakfast on the lanai looking over the early morning sun over the ocean and then taking a great walk on the paved walking / biking trail just outside the condo along the beach. I was a little concerned at first that the condo did not have A/C but the steady tradewinds coming in off the coast kept the condo cool. We will definitely stay in this condo again if we ever have the opportunity to go back to Kauai.

Everything was Wonderful !

  • 5 of 5

We rented the unit for a one month period and were delighted with the accommodations !

First I must commend Gary on outstanding communications in regard to the rental. He responded in a very timely and professional way to all requests and was very accommodating when we had to modify the dates a bit due to flight issues.

The location on the Coconut Coast (East side) of the island is in our opinion is the best central location for seeing everything the island offers. You have sunrise every morning to enjoy from the lanai, as well as whale watching and other marine life to enjoy. We had one day where we watched a monk seal come in and take a 4 hour siesta on the beach only a few feet North of the condo. Whales are pretty much an everyday sighting (during winter season) , however after many stays on the Coconut Coast, this was the first time we had ever seen a school of Dolphins. We always bring a small pair of binoculars for watching the water.

Colorful Kauai Roosters + Chickens are present on the grounds, as they are anywhere on the island.

Condo was neat and clean. As mentioned in the other reviews here, it was probably the best equipped kitchen of any unit we have ever stayed in. Cookware and dishes were good quality. "Junk drawer" with lots of little niceties like scotch tape, a flashlight, sewing kit, rubber bands, note pad, pencils, pens, etc.

Furniture was comfortable and in good shape, as was the bed.

Being a corner unit gives you an extra window on the side of the living room, which makes the unit brighter and increases the breeze. It was also nice to have the lanai open to the north for an expanded view and breeze.

Beach chairs and equipment present for your use. There is a good selection of books, movies, and CD's for your use if desired.

Pono Kai is an older multi building condo with a mixture of individual owned and "corporate" owned units. Very well maintained with tennis courts, pools, putting green, exercise room, etc. There is an elevator to the 3rd floor if you wish to use it. We have stayed at other 3 story units on Kauai that do not have an elevator, and it was not an issue for us, but as we get older, we used the elevator for luggage. Laundry room located in the building on the first floor next to the elevator.

There is a white sand beach in front of the unit for sunbathing. The water is protected by a reef and swimming or snorkeling is much quieter than many of the near by beaches.

Mahalo Gary !
