We're on the third (top) floor (with elevator) in a corner unit with unobstructed views north south and east. Gorgeous sunrises from our lanai (balcony) and views of the beautiful mile-long sandy beach, with its walking, jogging, bicycle trail.

The Pono Kai Resort is located right in the quaint town of Kapaa. Why Gary & Barbara Stephens chose Kauai

Kapaa is centrally located with a 40 minute drive north to the end of the road, and another 40-minute drive to Poipu area or an hour's drive to the West end of the road at Polihale.

What makes this condo unique

Quiet, quiet, quiet. The sound of the surf and the trade winds rustling through the palm trees instantly soothes jangled nerves, and puts us in a state of wonderful relaxation.

Outstanding view end unit top floor location, very nice unit, excellent ammenities, well equiped

  • 5 of 5

THE UNIT: Top floor end unit on the beach at Pono Kai. Perfect. The units are above average size, but the END units have the extra window on the side. That gives the living and eating area a MUCH larger and brighter feel. And the top floor gies them a great view plus makes them very quiet. We did not hear others in the building. VERY comfortable bed. Good furniture. Sat on the lanai for many hours and watched the ocean. Saw GREAT moon-rises from the lanai with the moonlight spreading on the water! The breezes from the ocean makes air conditioning unnecessary--even during our stay the weather was hot, but inside we were fine with the sliding door and windows open. Clean unit.

THE RESORT: Pono Kai is very unusual in that some of its building are REALLY close to the ocean. {But there is no noise from the road, and a nice sounds of waves from the sea side). We just walked down the stairs (there is also an elevator) and walked across the bike/walking path and we were one a nice sandy beach that seemed quite safe for boogie boarding or wading and swimming close in. The resort is within walking range of most all of Kapaa. Right on the walking and bike path. You can rent bikes across the street. Be sure to bike the bike path or walk it. Resort has a pool and a spa, propane BBQ grills, and gold putting green, and shuffleboard, and two lighted tennis courts (almost no other players--and the courts were in petty good shape!!). The resort staff was very friendly. All amenities are free.

THE OWNERS: seem like extremely nice people who have put a LOT of thought into making thir unit into a great rental. In the unit there have boogie boards, snorkels, fins, beach chairs, two coolers, a safe, etc etc etc. And they are good communicators.

We just loved it there and will book them again on our next trip to Kauai. HIGHLY recommended

Delightful Dream Destination

  • 5 of 5

3 middle-aged (67-68!) college girlfriends enjoyed one delightful week in Kauai. We had a beautiful view of the ocean, soothing sounds of the surf, and brisk ocean breezes every day and night in this corner 3rd floor condo. Although a little dated, we had every amenity we could have wanted. And though AC would have been nice at night, it was not really needed to stay cool and did not really detract from the comfort of the condo. It is well-situated to take advantage of sights and activities both north and south. The concierge services were excellent with one exception. She was not able to provide a contact for outrigger canoeing, which we were able to do quite easily.

Overall, we were delighted with our stay and would book it again!

Thank you Gary and Barbara

Comfortable paradise

  • 5 of 5

The property is exactly as advertised. The beds are extremely comfortable (a big plus) and the kitchen is well stocked with equipment and utensils. The condo is very clean (another big plus) and extra bath towels as well as beach towels are provided. The location is perfect and waking up to the sunrise over the ocean every morning is heaven. This condo is a top floor view property. Morning coffee on the lanai looking at the ocean and feeling the refreshing breeze is the best and we took advantage of the opportunity to do this everyday. The owners are wonderful and do everything possible to ensure a positive stay. This is the third time we have stayed in this condo and continue to love it. We highly recommend this condo if you like being on the ocean and sleeping well in the lovely beach town of Kapaa. We definitely recommend morning walks on the bike/walking path along the water in front of the condo. Verde is the best Mexican restaurant with locally sourced and organic ingredients. It is within walking distance and located next to the Big Save (our favorite local grocery store). Comfortable paradise!

Great location - both on the island and in the Pono Kai Resort

  • 5 of 5

This condo is Gary and Barbara’s “home-away-from-home” that they make available so that others can experience Kaua’i. It includes many of those little things that one has in one’s own home and is quite comfortable. Gary and Barbara are welcoming and gracious hosts (albeit done from 1000s of mile away), providing valuable information and items to make one’s stay enjoyable, including boogie boards, fins, masks, beach chairs, beach towels, coolers, and more. Great guest/customer service.

The condo has a great location – both on the island and in the Pono Kai Resort. With no continuous highway circling the island, Kapa’a is centrally located for exploring to the north and to the south. Old Kapa’a Town – with its boutique shops and restaurants - is easy walking distance, literally starting on the next block. We like kalua pig and lau lau and found a great place for that at Pono Market just blocks away. Three supermarkets are within a mile to the south. More restaurants and shops are also to the south. We had a great fish dinner at the Hukilau Lanai. A miles-long walking/biking path along the shore is right outside the condo. Bike rentals are available next to the resort. Also just off the condo is a nice swimming beach when the surf is calm (surf can get rough, especially in winter). The resort's 12 hole putting green right off the shore was fun. A surfing lesson at Hanama'ulu Beach was also an experience to remember.

Being an end unit on the top floor of the most northern building in the resort affords it an expansive view of the shore not available in other units. Having been to the islands >10 times (4 to Kaua’i), we’ve done many of the typical things that tourists do. Being able to watch and hear the surf was a high priority for us, and we got to do that. We spent many hours just relaxing on the lanai, savoring the waves, relishing the turquoise sea, hearing the rustle of the palms in the breeze... a lovely tropical experience!

Great Condo and Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Gary and Barbara’s condo for 10 days and it exceeded our expectations. It had everything we needed to feel at home including beach towels, beach chairs, and even a cooler for you day trips. The Kapaa location is the best central location on the island for all your day trips to all parts of the island. The highlight was a full day trip on a catamaran along the spectacular Na Pali coastline. The Dolphin restaurant in Hanalei was our best dinner out. We loved cooking great seafood from the local market using the convenient grills at the Pona Kai resort. The Olympic Café within walking distance was good for calling in carry out lunch orders when hanging around the pools at the resort. Each day started with breakfast on the lanai looking over the early morning sun over the ocean and then taking a great walk on the paved walking / biking trail just outside the condo along the beach. I was a little concerned at first that the condo did not have A/C but the steady tradewinds coming in off the coast kept the condo cool. We will definitely stay in this condo again if we ever have the opportunity to go back to Kauai.
