About this property

Charming, Comfortable and Convenient, near everything midcoast has to offer

t

Smack in the middle of the prettiest village in Maine. The Oar House, on a quiet side street is near everything mid coast offers: Ocean scenery, lighthouses, hiking , boating, whale watching, shops and antiques, great restaurants and arguably the most famous Lobster Shack in Maine, Reds Eats is a short walk away. Authentic 1918 shingled cottage with two spacious bedrooms on the second floor, a full bathroom on both levels. Beautiful eclectic furniture, artwork, good linens ,well equipped kitchen.
Beautifully furnished with a mix of contemporary and antiques this house exudes charm. There is artwork everywhere and from everywhere. The owners and ancestors consists of Sea Captains, sailors, pilots, diplomats, miners and artists, the house reflects their travels and talents. The house is two stories and may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues or small children. The master bedroom has an Antiques West Indian 4 poster high bed with a queen mattress. The second bedroom has an brass bed converted to a queen. The pretty upstairs bathroom has a claw foot tub and shower combo. There is a comfortable Daybed in the private first floor sun room off the living area that can be used for an addition sleeping space. Please advise us if you need to have the day bed made up as a bed. LOL the owner finds it a perfect spot for that afternoon nap.
The new downstairs bathroom, next to the laundry does have a large handicap accessible shower. The fully equipped kitchen has an electric range and a full size refrigerator, and quality pots and pans for those who plan to cook. There is a gas barbecue outside and we plan to add some outdoor living area soon. Until then, we enjoy sitting on out front stoop and enjoying the clean air and our pretty historic neighborhood but we eat in our sunny dining room.

The neighborhood

Wiscasset is famous for lots of things, the Prettiest Village in Maine, The Wiscasset Speedway, the worm (fish bait) capital of the world, five masted schooners, Sea captains homes, some open to the public and dozens of specialty and Antique shops and Art galleries, and of course Reds Eats.
A real must visit in Wiscasset is TREATS, a bakery/Deli/gourmet wine and cheese and well ,all sorts of Treats shop is just a 3-4 minute walk from the "Oar House". We also love to stroll to "Sarahs" on the waterfront for a great moderate priced meal with a gorgeous view ( save room for desert or take it to go). Reds Eats is just across the street get there early or if you do not want to wait in line for a lobster roll you can take a few more steps down to the shore and have one at Spragues, or a crab roll, clams, a shore dinner, whole Lobster etc.
Jump in the car for a two minute drive to one of the finest restaurants in the area. The little Village Bistro is the place for a special dinner, but make a reservation because it is popular. If fried seafood is what you crave, the Sea Basket is a couple of minutes drive south on Route 1, not far from Ships Chow Hall which is THE breakfast spot with cheerful service and homemade bread.. Grocery shopping is easy with a major Shaws super market a short drive south on Route 1 and for last minute essentials but with decent sandwiches, Pizza and an outstanding wine selection try the Quikstop right around the corner on RT 27 ( they also carry to die for "Gelato Fiasco" made in Portland)
Damariscotta is only 9 miles away and an easy drive for another dozen or so eateries offering everything from a Mexican food truck to Thai to charming pubs and more cute shops and the two original Renys where Mainers have been getting bargains for dozens of years.
You can rent a Kayak a 5 minute walk or a 2 minute drive away down on the town dock. The Sheepscot is a beautiful estuary to explore.
Portland Maine is only about 45 minutes away as is Rockland and Camden. In the same amount of time you can get down to the Pemaquid peninsula with stunning scenery,a lighthouse, a beach and a colonial fort. Boothbay Harbor is even closer with boat tours, whale watching, shopping, and restaurants. The Maine Botanical Gardens nearby are just spectacular and worth a trip anytime of year. Popham Beach, Five islands, Reid state park are all within an easy drive. Freeport LL beans and dozens of outlest are an easy 30 minute drive There are many hiking and biking opportunities in neighborhood also. A great morning walk would be to cross the bridge to Edgecomb . Watch the lobster men haul their traps, walk a little further and visit the Sheepscot River Pottery on Davis island. If you are a real walker Fort Edgecomb is not far either. The Sheepscot river offers kayakers lots of opportunities to explore beautiful scenery both upriver or down.

Beautiful house in convenient location
We really enjoyed our stay in Wiscasset. Helen’s house is charming, comfortable and conveniently situated. The house was very clean which is always a big concern for me when renting a property. It was also very homely and well maintained. We’d definitely stay here again when next in Maine.

Cute home near EVERYTHING!
We really enjoyed our visit to Wiscasset! Helen’s home is in the perfect location. We easily walked to town daily for coffee, dinner, and shopping! Located very close to Boothbay Harbor, breweries, botanical gardens and more! Helen made sure we were comfortable in her home during a warmer day/night. Weather was beautiful, cannot wait to go back!

Clean, cozy and convenient.
Check in and out was a breeze. House was exceptionally clean and the bedding was comfortable. Great communication with Helen, the owner. All facilities worked well. We hit some unseasonably warm days so it got quite uncomfortable at night. A window A/C unit would be recommended. Ideally located to quickly get on the road to Boothbay Harbor... about a 20-minute drive. Botanical Gardens was fun. Red's Lobster Rolls is a 3-minute walk around the corner. Ditto for some decent restaurants. Nearby grocery chain stores will steam their $6 a pound lobsters for free. Otherwise be prepared to pay tourist rates near the Boothbay wharf restaurants. Bar Harbor drive is about 2 1/2 hours. Suggest weekday trip to avoid weekend traffic.Downside of the trip? VRBO took over two weeks to refund my damage deposit (no damage incurred) when the usual policy is an automatic five days after checkout. Very disappointing. So much so that I will make this my last booking with them and their parent company, Expedia. They had my $500 for weeks prior to check-in. Could they be floating the currency to their advantage?

Bring Your Own Curtains
My family and I have stayed in several VRBOs and this is the first review I've felt compelled to write. While the house itself is charming, there are a number of issues the owners need to address immediately. First off, curtains. The pipe in the upstairs bathroom leaked so we could only shower in the downstairs bathroom. Nothing like walking in after your 16 year old daughter has showered, and noticing that there are two windows, both facing the neighboring houses where lights are on, and no curtains on either window. My husband then went outside and yep, the neighbors could have totally been watching our daughter getting in and out of the shower. Throw in that there were no curtains in the living room either, which meant absolutely no privacy when watching television or walking from the bathroom to the stairs. Throw in the 90 degree temps and the sun beating through the windows ALL day and no air conditioning. Nothing like going on vacation and spending three sleepless nights because it's too hot to sleep. I realize that the temperatures don't typically get that hot in Maine, but here's a thought. Don't rent out a house without air conditioning during the hottest months of the year. Not sure if it was the heat inside the house or just the refrigerator in general, but there were no cold drinks either because nothing in the refrigerator would stay cold. The oven can't be used because you can't read the temperature display, so cooling and 'heating' are an issue. (the owners even admit to the oven not working, saying it's a big fix (just go buy a new one!). When I called the owner because the breaker went off during the night -- there goes the fans -- she was very nice and apologetic. She mentioned taking the curtains down because they were ugly. The sheets and garbage bags I taped to the windows weren't exactly designer-worthy and the frustration that they kept falling down wasn't fun either. In other words, I'd have preferred the ugly curtains to no curtains and I'm pretty sure 'any' curtains could have been picked up at a store somewhere and put up in the bathroom in the least. The feeling I got was that the owners did a lot of work on the place and that shows, but not enough work. The area is charming. Loved the location and the house is full of potential. I'd just recommend the owners address the issues that made me yearn for a hotel room.

Helen is an Artist, designer, collector, entrepreneur turned real estate professional. Dennis is a Renaissance man who is excels at whatever he sets his mind to, helicopter pilot, sailor, sail maker, builder, cabinet maker and guitar player. We both try to leave anywhere we live more beautiful than we found it. We love to travel and we love our Yorkies.
During our time in Maine , we remodeled two homes and built a new one in Alna and founded TREATS in Wiscasset. We now live in Vieques Puerto Rico.

Why they chose this property

We lived in mid coast Maine for a dozen years and and made wonderful friends and always wanted to return. Wiscasset is right in the middle of everything we love about Maine. We wanted to be in the village, wanted to be able to walk to restaurants and shops. We wanted a house with charm and history. We needed a place for some of our treasures representing hundreds of years of family history that were in storage ( we live in Puerto Rico and many of our things do not adapt well to the tropics) We searched and searched but in the end this little house chose us!

What makes this property unique

Location location location! Just far enough from route 1 to be very quiet but near enough to get everywhere we want to go easily.
