Beautiful property!! The road up is TOUGH but worth the climb up. Great for groups!
Unbelievable view -- and unbelievable promises
There’s no doubt that this property is on a gorgeous piece of land and has an unbeatable view, but during our stay, we ran into some issues that other guests should know about before they book it:
You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle: Our car took three attempts to get up the very steep, dirt road that leads to the property. There’s no railing blocking the cliff side, so if you slide (we did), your car could feasibly fall. This makes leaving the property to go out to dinner or to the store much more difficult -- and frightening.
We had no way to contact anyone: There’s no cell service and no landline, and the wifi didn’t work for our entire stay. The caretaker said someone would come to replace the router, but no one did. We had a walkie-talkie, but after the first day, he didn’t respond to it; he eventually told us it must have broken. This became a safety issue when our daughter was stung by a bee (there were LOTS of bees) for the very first time and we didn’t know if she was allergic. With no way to contact the caretaker and a risky drive down the mountain, it was unsafe.
The power was unreliable: The first day there, the power went out about five times. The caretaker had to come each time (the walkie talkie was still working then) to punch in a code. He said it had never happened before. The second day, it did stay on.
The pool wasn’t heated: The pool is gorgeous, but the caretaker claimed it was heated. It was not!
Promised services didn’t exist: Once we realized the drive up and down was risky and that we had no wifi, we realized going out for food wasn’t really an option, so we only had the food we’d brought with us. We thought we might take advantage of the catering service or shuttle service the house notes said were provided, but since we couldn’t contact the caretaker, and he didn’t come up to check on us, those services didn’t exist.
Other issues: the stove wouldn’t light at first and is missing knobs, there’s no cooking oil of any kind, there was a fairly strong odor of mildew in the downstairs bathroom that required us to keep the door shut, a drone hovered above us while we swam in the pool, presumably taking video because it stayed there for a few minutes (so creepy).
Ultimately, if you have a 4-wheel drive, come prepared, and know what to expect, you can enjoy this property, but it shouldn’t cost what it does. It might be a million-dollar view, but that doesn’t justify the rental price.
Beautiful spot with vast views of the pacific ocean!
Accomodations were adequate tho many things not in full working order. A work in progress
This place has a lot of potential if anyone actually cared for the property. NOT worth the price.
The views from this place are amazing and the property itself is nice. Unfortunately it's run awful. It's like it's an after thought to rent it out. There is a human sewage smell by the front of the house that is just awful. Seems to be come from a vent pipe from the septic tank that is a few inches off the ground and maybe from the shower drain in the bathroom. Noticed this was an issue in other reviews. They haven't bothered to get it fixed I guess. There were no trash bags or paper towels, had to find trash bags in a construction area to be able to toss our trash. Someone's clothes was laying around arrived as well as towels in the dyer. Food left in fridge. Seemed odd. The "heated" pool was ice cold so don't expect it to be warm. No one showed us how to turn on the heater for the pool or spa but luckily my buddy was a former pool man and got that going. The absolute worst part was no one bothered to make sure the generator that powers everything in the house was filled up with fuel. It died on the second night right as we were trying to cook our big meal we had planned. No oven, no fridge, nothing. We could not get a hold of the caretaker on the radio after multiple attempts and with no wifi and cell coverage, there were no other options. Laid out under the milky way and made the best of it. A lot of wasted food because of that. The property manager was quick to address the problem once I told her about it and refunded a night but I still feel it wasn't enough. The enormous cleaning fee is a joke because the place was not clean! I feel absolutely robbed and can't recommend this place. I'd stay away until they can get their act together.
A view like waking up on Christmas Morning!
This place was amazing and the highlight of our California vacation! The ride up the driveway was something we did at night so that part was a little nerve wracking since there are no lights and it is uphill and curvy. It is best to arrive in the daylight if possible. It is also important to know that you will not have cell service the majority of the Big Sur Drive so make sure you have the address and the meeting place for Will the Caretaker to meet you and guide you up to the house prior to driving into the area. Once you are at the top of the hill and at the property there is excellent WiFi and we had no problem. Will was our caretaker and he was awesome. His home is also located on the 250 acre property and he was always there if we had any issues or questions. He had great suggestions for surf spots and restauraunts and he spent some time with us telling us about the history of this beautiful property that he grew up on. It is truely and amazing place that we hope to revisit and I highly recommed experiencing it for yourself!
Great views, but ...
I wanted to love this property, because the views were spectacular, but for the price there were too many things that could have made this experience so much better. The main things that you might not get from the description is that this place is really isolated, off the grid, has little to no communication capabilities, and the road to the house is not for the faint of heart (steep and winding). There is no cell service, so we had to rely on sparse WiFi at the house to communicate with the caretaker. When WiFi was nonexistent, we only had a radio to communicate, and that was also not always answered. Other fails for this house included: no privacy in showers (no curtains or doors), limited toilet paper for 8 people, power outage during our stay, no WiFi, sleeps 8 but dining table only seats 4, dirty dishes and moldy wine glasses, ants everywhere, pool was green, hot tub failed several times. Also, one of the most disturbing things was that there was mildew in the washing machine that smelled so bad and it made the whole house smell. Even when we asked the caretaker to please clean it out, they did nothing. This place was more log cabin camping than vacation home.
