About this property

'As Happy as God In France' at La Chartreuse du Maine, unique estate in Dordogne

LA CUISINE D'ALICE
La Cuisine d’Alice is a stylish one bedroom cottage on the grounds of the French country estate known as La Chartreuse du Maine. When you enter La Cuisine d’Alice, you step into a spacious room (600 square feet) with high ceilings and beautiful limestone walls. The sunny, modern kitchen has a window overlooking the courtyard of the château, where a table and chairs and two lounge chairs invite you to dine al fresco or sit in the sun. The living room has a table and chairs for dining inside, as well as a comfortable leather sofa and armchair facing the large wood burning fireplace. As you step up four stone stairs, you are in the master bedroom featuring a brand-new King-size bed made with fine linen sheets. The stone walls of your bedroom are of warm beige local limestone. The sunny private bathroom features a large modern bathtub/shower and a dormer window facing a peaceful pasture field.

LA CHARTREUSE DU MAINE:
La Cuisine d'Alice is one of the three independent holiday homes located in the grounds of Le Maine, an early 18th century delightful Chartreuse. Here everything breathes peace, harmony and beauty. Located in the centre of the Dordogne region, La Chartreuse du Maine is the perfect relaxing base to experience France, get to know the Dordogne, go in search of 350,000 years of history of mankind, discover local gastronomy and wines, and enjoy an easy way of life in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere.
The estate of La Chartreuse du Maine encompasses 67 acres of gardens, meadows and woods with many pathways, on the edge of the peaceful village of Cubjac. Within Le Maine you will enjoy relaxing in a lounge chair by the sunny swimming pool that overlooks the estate.

THE VILLAGE OF CUBJAC:
The shady tree-lined entrance to La Chartreuse du Maine is on the outskirts of the village of Cubjac, which is in the Dordogne region on the banks of the peaceful Auvezere River. You can easily walk to the village center for a drink at a local café or to do your shopping at the local bakery and general store. There is even a farmers’ market on Fridays with fresh local produce all year round, and hand-made regional crafts for sale in summer.

THE REGION AND 'PÉRIGORDINE LIFESTYLE':
It is not pure coincidence that man has been living in this paradise for over 350 000 years. When strolling alone in the superb unspoilt countryside you can just imagine why. Often, mostly in low season, you might catch yourself thinking the Dordogne has not changed at all. The joy of holidays in Dordogne is that nowadays you still can fully indulge in that ‘simple art de vivre’ which all these cultural and historical sites speak of. The Dordogne is synonymous with gastronomy and life in Perigord revolves around markets, recipes, seasons of mushrooms, truffles, foie-gras, walnuts, goat cheese, strawberries, wine harvest. Everybody here has a kitchen garden to grow their own preferred vegetable varieties. Every woman has her old secret recipes, a family heritage.

A perfect place in Perigord
We had a wonderful week in Cuisine D'Alice. The pictures on the website make it look lovely and in reality it's even better. The cottage itself is beautifully presented with very careful, tasteful attention to detail and comfort. It has its own garden which is very private and much larger than we expected with sunny spots, shade, and a range of garden furniture. The wider grounds include swathes of lavender and herbs and vegetables and an array of plants in pots as well as acres of woodland. The roses weren't in flower when we were there but must be fabulous. We enjoyed the pool every day. It's clean, well appointed and large enough to swim in, rather than simply cooling off (although it's great for that too!) Cubjac is pretty. It's small but has a great bakery, and a little market on a Friday. We booked a canoeing trip through the local campsite, which was fun. You really need a car to explore the area and there are lots of interesting places within easy reach. Hautefort and St Jean de Cole particularly stick in the memory. For a restful, peaceful, memorable and magical holiday, I'd have no hesitation in recommending Cuisine D'Alice. Catherine and Maxence, with their supporting cast of various animals, are perfect hosts.

Perfect property
We stayed at La Cuisine d'Alice from 13-25 August. This charming property was clean and comfortable with lots of lovely individual touches. The cottage is much more spacious than it looks on the website photographs. It has its own outside seating area which was ideal for enjoying quiet meals. The surrounding grounds were extensive and well kept, as was the lovely swimming pool. Catherine and Maxence were charming and discreet hosts. We thoroughly recommend this property.

We did not want to leave!
Had an amazing relaxing stay for a week. La Cuisine d'Alice was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Catherine and Maxence's warm welcome was very appreciated and their helpful advice throughout the stay was invaluable. We loved the pool and woodland walks as well as the resident cat and donkey. We feel that we have only just scratched the surface of this beautiful part of France and as La Cuisine d'Alice had everything we could ever wish for we will be returning.

Our 'Happy Place'
Despite the unsettled weather during our stay La Chartreuse du Maine was nothing short of wonderful. Catherine and Max were the perfect hosts and did their utmost to make our holiday both enjoyable and memorable. We were kindly greeted with freshly cut flowers from the beautiful gardens of La Maine and a fridge full of mouth watering goodies which went down a treat after our lengthy drive to reach Cubjac. We fell in love with the place as soon as we arrived and forming an instant bond with Bibi the resident cat certainly clinched the deal, we struck up quite a friendship and was really sad to leave her. My husband found Zebulon the donkey highly amusing, notably with his loud and unmistakeable eeyore that was to be our daily alarm clock, a welcome wakeup call following a wonderful night’s sleep in our sumptuous bed. Our charming little French conversion was faultless, la Cuisine d’Alice has been impressively restored to create the perfect ‘French country chic’ bolthole for two, its bold colours and antique pieces providing a warm and welcoming place to stay from home. The bedroom certainly took centre stage on its mezzanine floor, the idyllic spot to enjoy your morning cuppa whilst appreciating the rest of the open living space in all its grandeur!! The La Maine estate is vast and praise to the owners for cleverly positioning the pool in the perfect spot to enjoy the pretty roof tops and breathtaking scenery afar. The view of the main house when you enter La Maine’s sweeping driveway is simply stunning, beautifully perched with its cool rustic shutters and ivy clad exterior. La Chartreuse du Maine is extremely peaceful, you really can just kick back with a good book, glass of vino and forget the stresses of everyday life, unquestionably well worth the long journey from the UK.

About the host

Host profile image
Your French English-speaking hosts, Catherine and Maxence:
We live permanently on site and are delighted to welcome you to our “Maison de famille” and share with you our passion of this Perigord region which has inspired so many writers, philosophers and artists. We are happy to share our extensive knowledge of the Dordogne region, and love to help with suggestions of best places to visit, scenic roads and itineraries, activities, history of the region, little-known fine restaurants where you can enjoy regional specialities such as magret de canard and foie gras; wineries, farmers' organic markets… to make your stay with us a wonderful Perigourdine experience. However, we are very discreet and respectful to our visitors’ privacy.

Why they chose this property

La Chartreuse du Maine has been our family home for four generations. Catherine's great-grandfather bought it in 1925, even then, to escape the ‘busy town of Limoges’! All our lives, whilst living and working in Paris, we spent most of our holidays in this Perigord we love. Catherine was a photographer and Art director in advertising agencies, and Maxence is an artist, painter and illustrator. 20 years ago we decided to leave Paris, restore our great-grandfather’s château and settle in the Dordogne. We wanted to to pass a certain 'Art de vivre' on to friends and guests who would appreciate the harmony of an authentic place in this peaceful region of Dordogne.

What makes this property unique

Because of the unique location of La Chartreuse du Maine, in the centre of the Dordogne near Sarlat, Lascaux 4 (Centre International de l'Art pariétal), Périgueux and Brantôme, you will have so much to visit you might feel ‘overloaded’! Maxence is happy to help you with his Magic Map where our best spots and itineraries are highlighted. Anyway, accept the idea that you will never have enough time to see every place of interest, unless you come back every year for decades (which we would love). So, please take it easy, select the sites you’re interested in: visit less, but in more depth. Or take the other option, don’t plan anything, wander aimlessly in this away-from-it-all countryside and let yourself be filled with wonder at every bend in the road. Whatever you choose, make the most of this quiet timeless life: at every moment experience the peace, harmony and beauty which are definitely the real magic of Perigord.
