Nice island, poorly kept place
First the good stuff: Ambergris is a great place-- great scuba and snorkeling, friendly local people, bustling little town, not a lot of hustlers, you can walk along the beachfront seemingly forever. The golf carts are a blast to drive and it is easy to find your way around. There is a very laid-back vibe to the island that is hard to find in many holiday destinations nowadays. We felt safe at all times.
Now the not so good stuff: there is a lot of trash on the island and especially on the beaches. It gives the overall impression that the island is in a state of decay/people have no care for the environment. Groceries are expensive, (but hey, it's an island). There is quite a bit of construction going on.
This condo is well situated about 15-20 minutes golf cart ride to San Pedro. The view from the front door is fabulous. The air conditioning units work well. The pool is a nice temperature, but there are only 8 or 10 beach loungers to sit on poolside.
Unfortunately, the condo itself is in a state of disrepair (eg stove needs to be replaced- one burner completely non-functional and stove controls were 'hit and miss'; mish-mash of crockery/cutlery; insufficient and dirty outdoor chairs; indoor seating/dining space insufficient for 7 people; inadequate cleaning supplies like brooms/dustpans). The bathrooms are dated and a bit basic, but at least the water was hot. The wifii does not extend to the upstairs bedrooms, and is spotty, so if you plan to work while you are there, think again. The property neighbours/other residents were friendly and helpful. However, there was a near continuous waft of cannabis smoke in the vicinity, which was offensive.
Overall, this condo is fine if you plan to eat out most of the time and are not spending too much time in the condo itself.
