Dana Wingate: Property Manager
About Dana Wingate: Property Manager
I worked in a 21 room country inn/bed and breakfast in Colorado in 2000 which I really enjoyed. After moving to Asheville in 2001, I wanted to pursue owing a vacation rental and we found Bears Den in 2006. I find hospitality is my gift. We owned other cottages but are back to having just this one, it's our favorite and our 'baby' you could say. We hope to one day own a bed and breakfast. We love having this cottage and want to make you feel like you are home away from home.

Why Dana Wingate: Property Manager chose Barnardsville
I was in the mortgage business and was constantly being told about cabins and cottages from Realtors I was working with as we were looking. We knew right away Bears Den was the one. I cannot describe the magic and charm you feel. It may look rustic on the outside but it's very well kept inside and the grounds are beautiful and display everything the Western North Carolina Mountains hold.
What makes this Cabin unique
Renters love listening to the river below while on the porch with either a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. The hot tub is also a favorite because it sits up on a deck so it offers better views and is like it's own destination. Several renters have seen deer and turkeys in the yard. It's very quiet yet close to everything.
Pool / Spa
We love pets! We do charge an extra pet fee.
Minimum age of primary renter:25
100% refund for cancellations more than 30 days before check-in date. 50% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.
Comfy cabin in the woods
Comfy cabin in the Pisgah National Forest, close to Barnardsville. Nice responsive host and clean property. The cabin had kid toys, that was well received.
Non existent stay!
We arrived at approximately 5 o’clock to our Airbnb. Much to our surprise there were two dogs inside the house barking at us. No folks around but very obviously somebody still staying there. It was late in the day the day, we had a two-year-old with us and also bags of groceries that needed to go into a refrigerator. Luckily one of us had a phone with service up there so we called the number and the manager told us the owner had given permission to the people staying there to lengthen this day by a couple of nights, evidently with neither of them checking the calendar. We started driving back towards Asheville and I appealed to the manager to pull something out of a hat for us. She redeemed herself somewhat by reaching out to her network of friends and and connecting us with another rental owner/manager. We ended up spending the two nights in a different place. The place hadn’t been cleaned though it was still in pretty good shape and we just had to finish the laundry and make the beds ourselves. Everything ended up OK in the end but we had a stressful hour or so when we were stuck (traveling with a toddler has many more requirements/needs than an all adult trip) and didn’t know what our next plans would be. I was fully refunded. Nevertheless this just should not have happened. It was not acceptable.
Will stay again
This is the second time we've stayed here. Awesome cabin. Already planning our next trip.
bears den is great
great place to get away.. my only complaint.. AC window unit on porch next to best spot..WTF....we were there on record warm days...🙄really.. kitchen window folks.!!! ...would stay again for sure...
The cabin was exactly as described. We had a fantastic time! The Bear Den is lovely, picturesque, remote, clean, etc. I would caution whomever goes to this property: the drive up to the cabin is gravel, and the driveway is about a 45 degree incline, so it was definitely an adventure! Would go back in a heartbeat.
Bears Den cabin
I booked this cabin because it's private, secluded, has a hot tub & is dog friendly.
The pathways for walking are indistinguishable from the surroundings & the grass was very deep & slippery. I almost broke my neck tripping & falling after my foot got caught on a rock in the grass! The grass is so deep & rocks are everywhere that this place is an accident waiting to happen! I tried to grab the railing & it's barely attached to the vertical post and is rotted & splintered! The interior is just ok because of the mildew & mold smell that overtakes you when you approach the cabin. There are serious electrical issues throughout the cabin & lights flickered constantly on the porch & many inside outlets don't work! There was 1 AC unit in the bdrm & the LivRm was not cooled & I'm glad the weather was cool & we got by without it! AC was needed to remove the excess moisture in the cabin! I couldn't sleep in the bdrm because of the window AC unit, it's very Loud and cooled the bdrm only. The amenities are basic and I've never seen a rental without a microwave!?? The small toaster oven is greasy and gross. The hot tub was not useable because of no lighting and the water in the tub was murky brown and a bacterial breeding ground! The decking around the hot tub is extremely dangerous, Rotted railings here too! I was told to use the flashlight on my phone to see the way to the hot tub?
Rustic does NOT mean dangerous & hazardous to your health! I came to Bears Den for privacy, seclusion & an outdoor hot tub and I didn't have use of the tub until the afternoon before my 11am departure! Less than 12 hours! No privacy because of the light issues and no hot tub maintenance so, the property manager is running around trying to fix the lights & dumping chemicals in the tub.
The setting is cute & wildlife are beautiful. I spent the majority of my vacation icing my back and knee injuries from the trip & fall that happened when I first arrived! The hand written notes for the renters are greasy, unreadable and nasty to touch. This place would have allot of potential if the place was made safe and brought up to code. The outdoor chair's are old & broken. The structural & electrical issues are very dangerous! It's Almost 6 days since I fell there & I'm still having terrible pain! Reading the previous reviews, this has been happening for awhile! My trip was ruined because of the neglect of basic maintenance & safety. I'm Hoping my back & knee heal soon.
