Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday estate in Sandy Bay - Casa Cowee

House, 3 Bedrooms 2 bath + 1 bd rm house rented separately 1Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Casa Cowee, a rustic recently renovated island-style home on a lush private 1 acre estate, nestled in the warm, friendly community of Sandy Bay, offers dramatic million dollar views of the Caribbean and richly varied living spaces – a spacious Main House with master bedroom with new king bed and loft with queen bed or two single beds and large covered Sunset Deck where friends meet for breakfast and evening cocktails. Casa Cowee's 200-foot swimming dock (occasionally enjoyed by our neighbors) and tranquil waterfront provide unlimited fishing, snorkeling (reef in front of property), swimming, diving, dolphin-watching, and the opportunity to explore the colorful marine life in the Sandy Bay/West End Marine Reserve.

We have added two new kayaks for your enjoyment and provide you with snorkelling equipment for your stay. So you can create a dream vacation package by pre-booking tours, snorkelling and fishing trips.

Located on our beach just a couple of minutes walk is the Blue Bahia Beach Restaurant, Tranquil Seas Bar and restaurant, Fragapini bar/ restaurant at the Myoka Lodge and several local good eats. For diving Octopus Dive School, Tranquil Seas and Anthony's Key.

This unique beachfront plus rain forest property is just a short 10 min. drive to West End Village for dining, shopping and great evening entertainment. On Roatan fun is had by all residents and tourists alike.

The home is surrounded by expansive decks offering gracious outdoor living with lush tropical landscaping and exquisite sunset views. There is a charcoal BBQ on the deck.

For sleeping there is a large private Master Bedroom Pod with a new king bed and a large loft in the main living pod with a new queen bed. A single can be added upon request.

We have just added another full suite to Casa Cowee to cater to couples wanting separate sleeping/ bath quarters. This is a stunning sunny unit overlooking the water with it's own small kitchen, 3 pc bath and living space with a queen bed. It has it's own private deck. It can be added to the rental of the main house for $75.00 per night. Pictured in the last three photos on the listing

We invite you to enjoy our family home. Come live in an island paradise – relax on your private verandah overlooking the deep blue Caribbean Sea, cooled by trade winds and surrounded by the fragrance of beautiful tropical flowers.

The romantic and private Temple Tree House has just been finished and provides water front views from two decks. One large bedroom with 8' closet. Large bath with 7' open shower. Beautiful wood floors. Kitchen with new appliances. Steps from front deck directly on the beach. This house is rented separately but of course can be included in the Main House rental upon request.

Keywords: Diving Lush private rustic romantic sunsets beach dock reef dolphins fishing island luxury kayaks snorkelling huge decks, high up off the beach, estate, gated, secure, safe, fruit trees, 60' palms, massive Le Ceiba rain forest tree, lemons, jack fruit, mango tree.

Security, Casa Cowee had a theft in 2010.

Since I bought Casa Cowee in 2013 I have made it one of the most secure properties on Sandy Bay. Reason? Same as at home in Canada. If security is high there is less chance of intruders. I stay here on my own most times and I like to feel safe like everyone else. This Island is wonderful oasis and there is no need to live in a gated community. The Islanders are wonderful and helpful. The laws are now extremely strict about stealing and penalties far exceed petty crime.

We ask that all our guests use the security provided. Not only to protect them but to protect Casa Cowee's reputation and it's staffs jobs.

About Suzanne Boyce

The original owners Miss Marcia and her husband were on a road trip in the 70's that took them from their Aspen home down through the rugged backroads of Central America, they discovered the lovely island of Roatan.

Captivated by its lush tropical foliage on a hilly terrain and , crystal clear waters – the friendly, generous spirit of the locals – they bought a pristine property down the beach from what was then the only major dive operation on the island – Anthony's Key Resort.

That’s how the history of “Casa Cowee” was written. Miss Marcia passed the property on to her family and two years ago I visited and fell under it's spell. I am a Canadian from southern Ontario and fell in love with the Isle of Roatan, especially warm and natural Sandy Bay. You are part of a community here not a resort. So the next chapter in the history of Casa Cowee has begun. I know you will fall under it's spell also. Now that I have spent a good portion of a year here I know that Casa Cowee is totally unique. It is so easy to meet people, not just expats but islanders. I now have two guests who are back on the island with their families for extended stays so their kids get exposure to the real world outside of the bubble most of us live in. The kids are loving it with all their new friends, being part of the island community.

Suzanne Boyce purchased this estate in 2013

Why Suzanne Boyce chose Bay Islands Honduras

There is no better place on Sandy Bay proper for 180 degree vista of the breathtaking waters and reef and dolphins. You are high off the beach giving you total privacy and the deck is the most popular spot for the sunset happy hours. You also have one acre of lush property surrounding you for privacy and lots of fruit trees such as lemon, lime, bananas, coconut, jack fruit, mango etc. Sandy Bay is a large area. But Casa Cowee is located on a sleepy stretch of sand that includes Anthony's Key, Myoka Lodge, the Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas mini dive resorts. They are just a couple of minutes walk down the beach and all have restaurants and bars. Then for that special evening The Myoka Lodge on our beach also has a stunning bar and great food for happy hours and views over their infinity pool. So no need to go further than our own little friendly community. But if there is a need to step it up a pace the West End is just a 10 min. taxi ride away. This is a dive hub along with, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. The nice thing about Roatan is that everyone on the island parties together, so a great island experience.

What makes this estate unique

What Casa Cowee is – and is not ...

Casa Cowee is not a 'plug and play' unit in a gated community. It is our cherished family home, designed by a renowned local architect who was a dear friend of the original owners – and who put his passion for the island into every facet of Casa Cowee’s signature design.

One of the great beauties of Roatan and the Sandy Bay location is during the 'low' season you enjoy reduced rates but are there during their flowering and fruit season. We have a multitude of fruit trees on our property you can enjoy. I found that the weather is great and the temperature the same year round. Sandy Bay is a residential area so the same action year round. Much unlike the tourist areas of West Bay and West End.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I wanted to let you know what a terrific time we had. Your house is wonderful and Iris and Marvin are awesome … We only made it as far as Punta Gorda going east, but went to The Hole in the Wall (really neat) and did the Pig Roast at Bay Islands Beach Resort. Also enjoyed the Butterfly Garden, Botanical Gardens and Iguana Farm. The snorkeling in Roatan was the BEST I have ever experienced!! Thanks so much for letting us share your paradise.

Best view on Roatan...

  • 5 of 5

Suzanne had said that to me when we were getting excited for our family reunion. So true!!

We had a great time as a family catching up and watching time go by from our perch above the Carribbean. We went diving out of Tranquil Seas (a 5 minute walk down the beach) and would recommend them as well.

Channin, the manager, was warm and welcoming. He had all our answers. Jose, who was on location, could not have been more accommodating. Whether it was another bottle of water or getting out the kayaks. We were well taken care of.

5 Stars isnt enough

  • 5 of 5

Where to start? This property had all the elements my wife and I were looking for. We loved waking up to the sound of the dolphins playing every morning. In the evenings we felt like we were getting a very "local" experience, as we could hear the children playing on our dock (which we loved!) Having the two bars just down the beach was a huge plus for my wife and I, and I strongly recommend trying Bruces' world famous rum punch at the Blue Bahia beach bar. The home itself is magical. I love all of the stone work and landscaping! The live in hand (Jose) that stays on and maintains the grounds was a top notch guy. He washed our car every morning for us. All around great place to stay!

Authentic Island Feel

  • 5 of 5

Being in Sandy Bay gives you a true authentic Roatan feel in a wonderful beach front island home. You can either walk to a small locally owned cafe for a $2 native dish up the community laneway or south on the beach to 3 beach front restaurants with stunning water views. Each offer great food, happy hour and evenings with local entertainment. One of these was Tranquil Seas , this was our favourite restaurant and was also our Ace dive company. My partner completed his open water Padi and I did a refresher and we followed that with 5 days of 10 spectacular dives. Get them to take you to the dive site Mary's Place wow! Casa Cowee and Temple Tree house was totally relaxing, fabulous views, great beds, a safe to lock valuables like cameras or cell phones forcing you to stop thinking work, fully equipped kitchens, a barbecue for cooking the Maui Maui we caught on our 1/2 day fishing trip with Channin the property manager. Getting into West End is a short taxi ride, which you can catch by walking up to the main road just past Anthony's Key . When you return the taxi will drive you right back to Casa Cowee if you just say " down by Anthony's Key"! West End Sun Downer's for partying, the Argentinian Grill order the Steak , Oasis was great too. Oh yes and visit the Dolphins at Anthony's or watch them from the deck. You can snorkel out to the reef or take out the kayaks. The sound of the local families and children laughing and splashing at the beach front, usually on a Sunday or holiday just grabs your heart giving you a real chance to experience what it is to be a local in such a carefree lifestyle. Something we rarely get to experience at home in our busy life. There is an on site care taker who will be there to assist you and make you feel comfortable in this island setting. Oh yes the sunsets, amazing! The hammocks great. We also did some touring of the island which Channin can be hired for that too. What more can I say but this place was everything Suzanne said it would be and more. We did not want to leave and we will be back for sure. One thing to remember is as my partner said the most relaxing holiday ever and an authentic feel. For 2 people in our 60's we had a blast

Owner's Response: Hi Barry, Thanks so much for such an extensive review, not just of Casa Cowee and the Temple Tree House but of our own Sandy Bay neighbourhood and the island as a whole. It has the wonderful feeling of when we grew up in the 50's - 60's. Kids just out being able to entertain themselves playing and swimming, Everyone walking slowly down the beach and still able to take the time to stop and chat with each other. And lots of laughter. Not at all like the busy hustle and bustle of the West End or West Bay where you have to maneuver through the loud crowds of people and boats in and out of the water. I like the pace and glad you did too. Hope to see you and Ellen back soon. You were wonderful guests. Cheers, Suzanne

Idyllic tropical island location. Well appointed home with covered deck perfect for sunset cocktail

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the best trips I have ever had. Beautiful views, clean, comfortable,

accommodations. General managers Channin and Kim were warm and welcoming. The rock star treatment when we were met at the airport started the. Island stay with a pleasant note, rather than the stress and headaches usually associated with luggage retrieval and clearing customs. That property manager Jose was available every time we needed something and he kept the beach swept and grounds groomed. Take earplugs. The wind can be very loud, and the beach is public. The people on the beach were friendly, polite and helpful. They also like to have fun on beach at night, another reason for earplugs, but the party noise included guitars and laughter, no vulgar language. Restaurants are a short walk down the beach, taxis are plentiful. Water clear and warm. Thanks Suzanne, Channin, Kim and Jose for a great time.

Owner's Response: Hi Bob and Ruthie, Thanks so much for the fantastic review. You two were so excited to get there I sometimes worry that it will not meet your year long dreams but it did Plus! All beaches are public on the Bay Isles. I have not had a beach party there in the 3 yrs. I have been there (other than mine) LOL and I know it is hard to move people off who are just having a nice time with live music to boot. Just so you know next time they can be moved on with no problems. Channin, Kemberley and Jose told me to make sure you guys come back as they thoroughly enjoyed your stay. Thanks for making them feel as special as they are. Talk soon Suzanne

Roatan is the place for us!

  • 5 of 5

If you have a large family with many diverse interests and ages represented, this island compound is the ticket. Unlike anything in the Carib, this side of the island, right off the Sandy Bay reef, was our little paradise for the week after Xmas. We rented all 3 houses, including the main house with its spectacular covered deck. What a view what a place to have all to own's self. The deck alone would be worth the entire rental. It's where we met for sun up and sun down, playing lazy bones in the hammocks or just having a good read. Casa Cowee, is a friendly place, well equipped, well appointed and staffed by Jose who took care of our every want. Similarly, Channin and Kim - the property managers - were resourceful and never once tired of driving us around. They are adorable and belong to the oldest island family. We cooked some of our meals - everything tastes so very extra yummy ocean close - and even found time to use the weber grill. Having access to good rum and fruit mixers took care of the rest of our stay. If you want a truly relaxing time, even take in a dive at Anthony's Key next door, Case Cowee is your place. And, if you tire from cooking at home, plenty great dives and top notch food, right down the beach. Our family agreed, this stay was tops. Hope this place does not become too popular to rent, cause we want more of it!! Lest forget, the beds were very comfortable!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write one wonderful review. It is good to hear it from the perspective of the father and mother who were able to gather their children from around the globe to have a Christmas together using the full Casa Cowee compound. I was so pleased that Jose, Channin and Kim were able to contribute to the quality of your week stay. They will love to hear your comments as they really enjoyed your company! We would love to see you return soon. A great quieter time than Christmas is in spring summer when our property is in full bloom and lots of fruits. Roatan is quite the island. All the best in 2016 Suzanne

Sandy Bay is the place to be for snorkeling! Great house!

  • 4 of 5

The outdoor deck that looks out to the ocean is fantastic! To the side of the large deck is a smaller deck overlooking the ocean with beach-type chairs where we sat in lieu of sitting down at the water. Actually saw a monkey lala there! My husband and I slept in the master bedroom on the king bed and did not use the AC. The master has great cross breezes. One of our grown sons slept in the loft with the ceiling fan and stayed comfortable. Our other grown son slept on the sofa. If it wasn't for the portable fan that he moved from the loft, he wouldn't have been able to stay cool enough to sleep. Our other option was to put a twin in the loft for him, but he's 6'5" so the sofa was a better "fit". My mom stayed in the Treehouse that is VERY nice. She slept comfortably without any AC, but if there were 2 in the bed we all agreed that you would have to use AC. There is an outdoor shower between the main house and the Treehouse that was great for rinsing off. Jose, the groundskeeper, stays in a house at the back of the property. He is a phone call away (from the provided cell phone) and always quick to respond. Channin and Kimberly Bodden were also a phone call away. We rented a car, so didn't need to utilize their services much. They have their own tour company (Bodden Tours). Channin did line up a fly-fishing guide for my husband and sons. We ate ALL our evening meals at The Beach Grill at Blue Bahia and can't say enough good things about that restaurant. The snorkeling at the reef right in front of the house was great! We saw turtles, rays, lobsters, starfish, squid, barracuda, moray eels, porcupinefish, plus beautiful coral and huge schools of fish.

While the house does have its own dock, it will be constantly used by the locals. At one point on Christmas Day there were 30 people on the dock and in the water. Almost every day the dock was used by tour companies to load passengers onto boats. The "road" goes on the beach right in front of the house, so there is some vehicle traffic between the house and the water. The house does have a security system and we had no problems, but it took a few days to actually feels safe, too many locals wandering aimlessly. Of course, we were there for a holiday week (Christmas), so there may be fewer people around other weeks.

Would I stay here again? Yes, my husband and I loved the house and the location! Would my sons (ages 23 and 26)? No, they never felt safe. Would my mom (age 75)? No, too many stairs.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review Suzan. We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. I just arrived yesterday and so happy to be back. We had to laugh when your sons thought that they were not safe as everyone in the neighbourhood was in awe of their size! Maybe it was because everyone could not stop staring at your handsome, statuesque off spring LOL. I can't wait to get out snorkelling after your sightings. It is quite spectacular to be able to see so much right out front. Also your comments about the stairs for your Mom. We do have many guests in their 70's, even with issues but yes if not prepared this island is all hills and tropical but I am glad she did love her little hideaway. We have normally good control over the dock but during holidays like Christmas and Easter when the kids are out of school it is hard to say no to sharing as we have the best swimming area around. This island is kind of like a throw back to the 60's when as kids we used to wander and have all sorts of adventures. Channin, Kim and Jose would love to have you back again. They thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of you. All the best Suzanne

Great snorkelling and diving trips with the Octupus and Tranquil Seas dive operations just a 2 min walk down the beach. Stunning sites on the second largest coral reef in the world. There are two single kayaks and snorkelling equipment included in your rental. Some of the best bonefishing in the Caribbean is right down the beach from Casa Cowee and deep sea fishing. Our local fisherman Herbie has agreed to take care of our guests fishing trips. All you have to do is go down to our dock. There are some comments about our dock being over used by locals because it is such a great swimming dock. We have had to deal with the excessive use and it is no longer an issue.

There are four restaurants 1-2 minutes walk down the beach and two bars and many delicious local food restaurants. Our property manager can arrange meals to be brought in. There is a full medical clinic in a two minute walk including a recompression chamber.

Casual West End a 10 minute taxi ride away is loaded with restaurants, bars and shops. West Bay is the big beach with the large resorts and condos. Great for a visit if you want to people watch, parasail or just a change from tranquil Sandy Bay.
