Casa Cowee, a rustic recently renovated island-style home on a lush private 1 acre estate, nestled in the warm, friendly community of Sandy Bay, offers dramatic million dollar views of the Caribbean and richly varied living spaces – a spacious Main House with master bedroom with new king bed and loft with queen bed or two single beds and large covered Sunset Deck where friends meet for breakfast and evening cocktails. Casa Cowee's 200-foot swimming dock (occasionally enjoyed by our neighbors) and tranquil waterfront provide unlimited fishing, snorkeling (reef in front of property), swimming, diving, dolphin-watching, and the opportunity to explore the colorful marine life in the Sandy Bay/West End Marine Reserve.

We have added two new kayaks for your enjoyment and provide you with snorkelling equipment for your stay. So you can create a dream vacation package by pre-booking tours, snorkelling and fishing trips.

Located on our beach just a couple of minutes walk is the Blue Bahia Beach Restaurant, Tranquil Seas Bar and restaurant, Fragapini bar/ restaurant at the Myoka Lodge and several local good eats. For diving Octopus Dive School, Tranquil Seas and Anthony's Key.

This unique beachfront plus rain forest property is just a short 10 min. drive to West End Village for dining, shopping and great evening entertainment. On Roatan fun is had by all residents and tourists alike.

The home is surrounded by expansive decks offering gracious outdoor living with lush tropical landscaping and exquisite sunset views. There is a charcoal BBQ on the deck.

For sleeping there is a large private Master Bedroom Pod with a new king bed and a large loft in the main living pod with a new queen bed. A single can be added upon request.

We have just added another full suite to Casa Cowee to cater to couples wanting separate sleeping/ bath quarters. This is a stunning sunny unit overlooking the water with it's own small kitchen, 3 pc bath and living space with a queen bed. It has it's own private deck. It can be added to the rental of the main house for $75.00 per night. Pictured in the last three photos on the listing

We invite you to enjoy our family home. Come live in an island paradise – relax on your private verandah overlooking the deep blue Caribbean Sea, cooled by trade winds and surrounded by the fragrance of beautiful tropical flowers.

The romantic and private Temple Tree House has just been finished and provides water front views from two decks. One large bedroom with 8' closet. Large bath with 7' open shower. Beautiful wood floors. Kitchen with new appliances. Steps from front deck directly on the beach. This house is rented separately but of course can be included in the Main House rental upon request.

Security, Casa Cowee had a theft in 2010.

Since I bought Casa Cowee in 2013 I have made it one of the most secure properties on Sandy Bay. Reason? Same as at home in Canada. If security is high there is less chance of intruders. I stay here on my own most times and I like to feel safe like everyone else. This Island is wonderful oasis and there is no need to live in a gated community. The Islanders are wonderful and helpful. The laws are now extremely strict about stealing and penalties far exceed petty crime.

We ask that all our guests use the security provided. Not only to protect them but to protect Casa Cowee's reputation and it's staffs jobs.

About Suzanne Boyce

The original owners Miss Marcia and her husband were on a road trip in the 70's that took them from their Aspen home down through the rugged backroads of Central America, they discovered the lovely island of Roatan.

Captivated by its lush tropical foliage on a hilly terrain and , crystal clear waters – the friendly, generous spirit of the locals – they bought a pristine property down the beach from what was then the only major dive operation on the island – Anthony's Key Resort.

That’s how the history of “Casa Cowee” was written. Miss Marcia passed the property on to her family and two years ago I visited and fell under it's spell. I am a Canadian from southern Ontario and fell in love with the Isle of Roatan, especially warm and natural Sandy Bay. You are part of a community here not a resort. So the next chapter in the history of Casa Cowee has begun. I know you will fall under it's spell also. Now that I have spent a good portion of a year here I know that Casa Cowee is totally unique. It is so easy to meet people, not just expats but islanders. I now have two guests who are back on the island with their families for extended stays so their kids get exposure to the real world outside of the bubble most of us live in. The kids are loving it with all their new friends, being part of the island community.

Suzanne Boyce purchased this estate in 2013

Why Suzanne Boyce chose Bay Islands Honduras

There is no better place on Sandy Bay proper for 180 degree vista of the breathtaking waters and reef and dolphins. You are high off the beach giving you total privacy and the deck is the most popular spot for the sunset happy hours. You also have one acre of lush property surrounding you for privacy and lots of fruit trees such as lemon, lime, bananas, coconut, jack fruit, mango etc. Sandy Bay is a large area. But Casa Cowee is located on a sleepy stretch of sand that includes Anthony's Key, Myoka Lodge, the Blue Bahia and Tranquil Seas mini dive resorts. They are just a couple of minutes walk down the beach and all have restaurants and bars. Then for that special evening The Myoka Lodge on our beach also has a stunning bar and great food for happy hours and views over their infinity pool. So no need to go further than our own little friendly community. But if there is a need to step it up a pace the West End is just a 10 min. taxi ride away. This is a dive hub along with, great restaurants, bars and night clubs. The nice thing about Roatan is that everyone on the island parties together, so a great island experience.

What makes this estate unique

What Casa Cowee is – and is not ...

Casa Cowee is not a 'plug and play' unit in a gated community. It is our cherished family home, designed by a renowned local architect who was a dear friend of the original owners – and who put his passion for the island into every facet of Casa Cowee’s signature design.

One of the great beauties of Roatan and the Sandy Bay location is during the 'low' season you enjoy reduced rates but are there during their flowering and fruit season. We have a multitude of fruit trees on our property you can enjoy. I found that the weather is great and the temperature the same year round. Sandy Bay is a residential area so the same action year round. Much unlike the tourist areas of West Bay and West End.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I wanted to let you know what a terrific time we had. Your house is wonderful and Iris and Marvin are awesome … We only made it as far as Punta Gorda going east, but went to The Hole in the Wall (really neat) and did the Pig Roast at Bay Islands Beach Resort. Also enjoyed the Butterfly Garden, Botanical Gardens and Iguana Farm. The snorkeling in Roatan was the BEST I have ever experienced!! Thanks so much for letting us share your paradise.

Breath taking

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time coming to Honduras and I will guarantee that I will be back again. Casa Cowee has one of the best views on the island by far. Just outside of your door is an amazing reef where you can spend literally all day snorkling around in. To the right off of your deck over looking the bay is the dolphin pen where you can see them jumping around every morning

Casa Cowee is very central from the grocery store and the west end where you can go for a more touristy feel. If you step on to the beach and walk down you will come to the beach grill which was by far our favourite place to be. Great drinks, amazing service and a boat full of laughs.

I highly reccomend renting this place to anyone who is coming to Roatan, it is very homey yet exotic in all its ways. I will 110% rent here again and come back for a much longer stay this time, a week is only a tease.

Thank you Susanne for an unforgettable experience.

Owner's Response: Wow thanks Keith for the thumbs up and such a concise review. You captured the feel and in one week it is hard to enjoy everything that is available to you in our little West Sandy Bay. Then there is so much more to experience on the island. We are looking forward to your return. Cheers Suzanne

Unique Roatan!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our time at Casa Cowee. Channin, Kim and Jose went out of their way to make our stay special. Take heed about the locals using the dock and beach below the deck. We did find it disturbing at times, it is a very loud culture and cursing by children and adults was rampant. The dogs barking at times disturbed our sleep. The scenery, snorkeling and unique setting more than made up for the disturbances we experienced. Casa Cowee would be our preference over West Bay or West End.

Owner's Response: Hi Jodi, Thanks so much for the review. I am sorry to hear about the activity and swearing. I don't mind the odd beach soccer game but the activity does not sound like that. I just got off the phone with Channin and he said the activity has been heavier than normal due to spring break. We do have one of the best swimming holes out front and I like to see the kids having fun but swearing is not pleasant. Channin said you were too kind in not mentioning the incidents until later in your stay and Jose could have asked them to keep it down. We are rebuilding the dock this off season which is a major project but will change the activity greatly. As far as the dogs that is an island thing and they can be miles away. Most nights are great but when one starts the rest go. Thank goodness they don't go on for long. If you are a light sleeper bring earplugs. Island dogs don't sleep inside like our pets. LOL. This is why we don't have dogs at Casa Cowee. I will keep you posted regarding the dock and personally really looking forward to it as it will be for our guests only to hang out on. All the best and hope to see you back to the new and improved Casa Cowee. Cheers Suzanne

Our Favorite Family Vacation Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough about how wonderful and perfect this home was for us!! We spent an amazing week here and we wish so much that we could've stayed much much longer. Our favorites: #1: THE VIEW!! I couldn't stop taking pictures of the same sights because the colors of the water kept changing from amazing to even more amazing. The sunset was to die for!! #2: THE DECK - We spent hours and hours just relaxing in the hammocks and playing games and eating at the table. I'm an avid reader and I thought I'd be on that deck reading, but I spent the whole time looking at the view and watching the humming birds and the little lizards and the kittens...I never even cracked a book open the entire time!

#3: THE KAYAKS - Having them to use whenever we wanted was a huge bonus. We kayaked over by the dolphins and one jumped out of the water right next to us.... it startled and delighted us! #4: THE SOUND OF THE RAIN ON THE ROOF: It rained almost every night and the sound of the rain hitting the roof was so cozy and magical. We loved it! #4: JOSE - He was so sweet and helpful our entire time there. We were so sad to leave him....he felt like a part of our family! #5: THE RESTAURANTS DOWN THE BEACH - We really enjoyed the walk down the beach and back each night. We also got to know the restaurant owners and staff and other locals that frequent them. Everyone made us feel so at home and we learned tons about the area from them. We rented a car but we still ended up walking to dinner each night. We all agreed that we loved these places to eat the most! We NEVER felt unsafe in the area and were even comfortable enough to let our 13 and 10 year old go down and play on the beach on their own (while we relaxed in ear shot on the deck). They spent hours making sand formations and expoloring the edge of the water. Their favorite find was a bright orange star fish. #6: THE DOCK: We snorkeled off of it, we relaxed on it, and I took tons of pictures of it. We loved that the locals enjoy it as well. It was so fun watching everyone have a blast and our kids enjoyed an afternoon of jumping off of the dock with everyone else. #7: THE ENDLESS AMOUNT OF ACTIVITIES NEARBY: There is SO MUCH to do on such a little Island. Everything was close by but we still didn't get to do everything we wanted, even after doing something every day we were there. THANK YOU for all of our new precious family memories that your home gave us. We will be back!

Owner's Response: Hi Colleen, I was so looking forward to your review, especially as you had a 10 and 13 yr. old. It is perfect at Casa Cowee as you can let them run on their own and can still see and hear everything so they get to make friends, play soccer and have a new experience to take away with them. Your stay sounds close to perfect. I also love the sound of the rain at night then waking up to the nice wet leaves and the birds enjoying the fresh water. You are the first one to mention the reading part as I am also an avid reader but end up in a hammock listening to or watching all the small things happening around you. Better than any movie and the book just lies open on my chest. That is when you really know you are truly relaxed! All the best and do come back. Your family has rave reviews from Jose, Kim and Channin. Cheers, Suzanne

The Perfect Place in Roatan

  • 5 of 5

Casa Cowee was perfect! We stayed there 9 amazing days. The place is absolutely stunning and Jose, the caretaker was wonderful, helping us with any needs or questions. We loved the view, especially the beautiful sunsets each night. I was worried about bugs, which were no problem at all. There are 3 great restaurants and beach bars nearby with live music 3 times during our stay. We were glad to be in a home rather than in noisy West Bay or the West End. The snorkeling is amazing right off the beach. Casa Cowee is also right beside Anthony's Key where they study dolphins. We could see them from the beautiful deck. We absolutely loved our stay and felt it was the best place to be on the island. I have visited over 20 islands and will probably return to Casa Cowee.

Owner's Response: Hi Susan, We are so happy you really enjoyed your stay at Casa Cowee. Nine days is better than 7 that is for sure but still the island deserves more. I was there all of January and the property after 4 years is definitely showing well under the care of wonderful Jose and the manager's Channin and Kim. I am so fortunate. We would love to have you back again in the future. The low season May to Sept is an excellent time to come down also. That is when the island is in full bloom and is a bit quieter even on Sandy Bay but it really slows down at West End so you become one of the locals LOL. All the Best and thanks for being our guests. Suzanne

Relaxation in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

The house is in a great location for snorkeling and swimming all day. There are four good restaurants and three bars within walking distance but with that deck, we mostly cooked at home and ate overlooking the bay from our deck. Overall I highly recommend this place and with the two little casitas on the property, I look forward to going back with more family.

Owner's Response: Hi Sarah, That is exactly the way I feel when there. With the best view on the island it is hard to leave but then we do have some great nights out right on our own beach. After the sunset. We look forward to your return with more family! All the best Suzanne

Beautiful jungle tree house with an excellent deck

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 really enjoyed our stay at Casa Cowee here on Sandy Beach. Everybody who cares for the property is lovely (thanks Channin, Kemberly, anf Jose!) and we felt safe and taken care of. Suzanne made accommodations for my family to be comfortable. The house itself is very unique and I loved all the little details. If you are going to rent this place (which you should) please note that it is lanai style vent windows. Suzanne made this clear in our communication. There is an airconditioner in the main bedroom. Everywhere else is cooled by sea breeze and fans. I was perfectly comfortable with only a fan in the loft but other people may not be ( maybe the elderly etc) Plenty of windows means the view is otherworldly. When we weren't scuba diving we were sitting in the hammocks on the deck watching the hummingbirds, kittens, and lizards play and taking in the sunset. There's yummy restaurants right down the beach and I will miss seeing the stars so bright in the sky on our 5 minute walks back from dinner. Sandy bay is so much more relaxed and personal feeling than west end and west bay. I definitely plan on coming back. Thanks Suzanne!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Danielle for the review! I was so happy we could accommodate you when your other rental fell through. It was a tight fit but it worked. I knew you would have plenty of living space. West Sandy Bay is the place for a nice relaxing retreat for sure. Hope to see you and your family back next year. Cheers, Suzanne

Great snorkelling and diving trips with the Octupus and Tranquil Seas dive operations just a 2 min walk down the beach. Stunning sites on the second largest coral reef in the world. There are two single kayaks and snorkelling equipment included in your rental. Some of the best bonefishing in the Caribbean is right down the beach from Casa Cowee and deep sea fishing. Our local fisherman Herbie has agreed to take care of our guests fishing trips. All you have to do is go down to our dock. There are some comments about our dock being over used by locals because it is such a great swimming dock. We have had to deal with the excessive use and it is no longer an issue.

There are four restaurants 1-2 minutes walk down the beach and two bars and many delicious local food restaurants. Our property manager can arrange meals to be brought in. There is a full medical clinic in a two minute walk including a recompression chamber.

Casual West End a 10 minute taxi ride away is loaded with restaurants, bars and shops. West Bay is the big beach with the large resorts and condos. Great for a visit if you want to people watch, parasail or just a change from tranquil Sandy Bay.
