Overview

Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday home in New London

- 6 BR, 2.5 BA, Sleeps 13+.

Sunny and Charming 6 bedroom 1910 colonial is 4 houses away from Private Beach with newer kitchen, 2.5 baths , hardwood floors, stone fireplace, 1st floor washer and dryer, oil heat, new windows on 1st two floors, and private beach right on Long Island Sound. The house is four doors from the beach with a partial view of the water down the street. Coast Guard Parents: We are about 15 minutes from the Coast Guard Academy.

Submarine School Families: We are also about 15 minutes from Sub Base New London. The first floor has two living room areas, dining room, newer kitchen, and 1/2 bath. Second floor has a recently remodeled bathroom and 4 bedrooms (2 queens, 1 full, 1 with 2 twins). Third floor has two bedrooms and a full bath. One bedroom is walk-through and is configured as a family room. It has a queen futon that will sleep two plus a twin. The other has two twins.

We are 3 mins walk to Ocean Beach, 10 mins drive to Harkness Park, & 30 mins drive to the Branford House. All offer seaside weddings.

Lounge Away your Stress on our White Sand Beach.: The home includes beach rights on private Neptune Park Beach which is a lovely white sand beach on Long Island Sound. From that beach you can look out on the open water and see sailboats, ferries, commercial shipping, fishing boats, an occasional submarine or tall ship, 2 lighthouses, and Long Island in the distance. You can also launch a canoe or kayak there. The beach has three distinct sections separated by rocks. One has a diving and sunning platform, another is a small cove, and the third is an open expanse of white sand. Sitting on that part of the beach, you can almost feel like you are in the Caribbean!

September is the best time at the beach, crowds are gone and the water is still warm. In the fall, winter and spring, take beach walks on the board walk, or enjoy a casino weekend, or Thanksgiving and Christmas away from the city noise.

We accept credit cards through PayPal.

The Kids Won’t Be Bored Here, and Neither Will You: They can play volley ball, miniature golf or video games at Ocean Beach Park which is just 1 block away. The park also includes a public beach, restaurant, health club, a bar with waterfront deck, ice cream stand, gift shop, nature area, boardwalk, concerts and an outdoor swimming pool. Or visit an 1839 fort at Fort Trumbull State Park which is just 5 minutes away. Name entertainers perform on the waterfront at nearby Harkness Memorial Park’s season long open air Summer Music festival. Next door to Harkness, you can experience live theater at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. Both are about 10 minutes away.

Tour a Nuclear Submarine, or a Real Whaling Ship : In 30 minutes or less you can be at the Mohegan Sun Casino, Foxwoods Casino, Mystic Seaport (tour old whaling town and authentic ships), Mystic Aquarium, the U. S. Navy’s Submarine Force Museum (tour a real nuclear submarine and simulators), the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, as well as the many fine restaurants. Or see a baseball game with the Norwich Navigators, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. There are also vineyards located north of Norwich. And you can take a fishing or sail boat cruise.

Tour Mansions of the Golden Era or go Yachting

Tour the grand old mansions of the Gilded Era (circa the Vanderbilts and the Astors) in Newport, RI, which is an hour away. Or experience the yachting lifestyle at America’s Cup Charters. Their Twelves all raced for yachting's most coveted prize, and three actually won the America's Cup. Participation is welcomed but not required! Get involved in the sailing or just sit back and enjoy the sunset on picturesque Narragansett Bay.

About Gloria Woerheide

I am a computer software consultant. This house was my primary residence when I moved to the New London area from Chicago. I love the area and would not have moved out, except that I bought a larger house to turn into a bed and breakfast inn.

Gloria Woerheide purchased this house in 1996

Why Gloria Woerheide chose Connecticut Shore

Originally I came to the area for work and to live by the water. As time passed, I became more and more aware of all of the interesting things to do in the area. As the casinos grew, they brought in more and more first class entertainers and live sporting events. Being from Chicago I am accustomed to having many entertainment choices. In an area like New London County, you wouldn't think you would find the same level of entertainment, but because of the casinos you do.

I count myself lucky to have found this place. So much so, that I plan to retire here one day.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived two weeks ago – the grandparents from Newton, Ma and the rest of us from New York, NY. Grandma Bev had spent summers in Neptune Park through her childhood. She has been in heaven. The kids, Dean and Hal have had a blast. We lived at the beach and on the front porch. Could not have asked for better weather no rain at all until the very last day.

We made ourselves right at home in the house, which is great for a big family clan. We love the porch best of all. It has been a wonderful two weeks. We hope to return next summer.

Great beach house!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a family summer get-together , and it was perfect for us . The house was exactly as described . It had plenty of space for all 13 of us . Everything was neat and tidy when we arrived . It's location just a short walk to the private beach was perfect for the young children ages 2 to 7 , close enough to get to easily but far enough that the children wouldn't wander there on their own . The beach was excellent , uncrowded while sand with just a little surf for the youngsters . And the public park just down the road was fun to walk to for a little more activity and a summer magic show . The kitchen was fully equipped , and the beds were comfortable . Plenty of towels and bed linens . There was enough room downstairs and on the large porch for the kids and adults to comfortably stretch out . We highly recommend this house for anyone needing a spacious vacation place .

Great Home and Great Owner!

  • 5 of 5

My family rented the home for a polka festival that was taking place at Ocean Beach Park. We stayed at a different home last year and was not happy with the property. Immediately after returning home, I contacted Gloria about renting her property for 2016. She was wonderful and answered all questions promptly as they came up through the year. The house was warm, welcoming and very large. We had 11 adults through the week and everyone had space. The house had all ammenities that you could need at a beach home. We especially loved access to the private beach. It was breath taking and more than we imagined. The group loved that we were a short walk to the entrace to Ocean Beach Park. Needless to say we rebooked for 2017. If you are looking for a well kept, spacious beach home rental, I highly reccomend this property!

Everything Was Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house on Neptune for my sister-in-law's bachelorette weekend. The house was exactly what we needed! 9 women traveling together and the house was large enough that we didn't feel like we were on top of each other, and there were plenty of beds to choose from. We were also all able to get ready for a night on the town without getting in each other's way (a very hard feat to accomplish!). Gloria was extremely helpful and responsive and answered all of our questions leading up to the trip and was even at the house to greet us when we arrived, which was extremely helpful because she went over some additional information. I would highly recommend this house to anyone traveling with a large group. The price was also very reasonable! Thank you again to Gloria for everything; my sister-in-law enjoyed her weekend immensely, due in large part to our stay at your house!!

Couldn't have asked for a better weekend place

  • 5 of 5

Just wanted to say that this house was great. Rented this beautiful home near the beach and we couldn't have found anywhere better. The location, the owner, and the house all proved to be way more than satisfactory! The house is enormous and comfortably will sleep 10+. The home was great for our weekend and provided us with more than enough space to enjoy ourselves. Owner was extremely flexible and really made sure we had a great stay. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice waterfront place for a week or weekend! Thanks again Gloria and we look forward to renting from you again soon!

Beautiful house

  • 4 of 5

This is a very cute home, and had all of the amenities we needed. It was a comfy home that you felt welcomed into. When we were there the weather was a bit chilly, so we needed to turn the heat on. the furnace worked fine, and made us nice and toasty. The house itself it old but is well maintained. Houses built in those days have steep steps, so I had a bit of trouble going up and down them because I have a bad back, and knees. I managed, but when I went to bed, I slept well. I loved the dark wood floors that were well kept. I wish my floors at home looked as good. The kitchen has plenty of pots, and pans, and cooking for a large family would be easy. The beautiful beach is just a simple walk past three homes, and a spectacular view once you arrive there.

In October there were not many restaurants open in the area because it was out of sesason, but we did find a pizza that restaurant that did offer a good fare other than pizza. It was Ocean Pizza I had a good variety of fare. I had delicious fried clams, and sweet potato fries. Both were done to perfection, and was served a large amount of each. My niece had a delicious lobster roll and regular fries. We shared with each other.

The owner of the home was very obliging and called to see if there was anything we needed. She could not have been any nicer. Oh, there was a washer and dryer on the first floor, and plenty of detergent and fabric softener. If you prefer to bring your own, that is no problem.

I highly recommend this property especially for a large family or a group of friends. Gloria is a caring owner, and takes good care of her guests.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Could not have had a nicer week than our vacation week at this house in New London. The private beaches are beautiful-really beautiful- and just a block away from the house. The house is big enough for large groups but was cozy even for our family of four. We really appreciated being able to bring our dog and she too had a great time hanging around on the porch (enclosed with gate) watching the world go by. The owner was friendly and accommodating and easy to deal with. The house is clean with plenty of accessories (towels, kitchen supplies, sheets, etc.) to make things easy and smooth. Best vacation!
