About James Sane
I was born and raised in western North Carolina. Sylvia and I have lived in Gerton for the past eighteen years. We purchased our house here in 1996. We moved here in 2000 to live full-time. I have extensive family roots to this area. Gerton is named after my Great-Great Aunt, Gertrude Freeman. I retired from the Army in 1995. I spent my first eight years in the Airborne Infantry. I Became an Army Aviator in 1981. I flew helicopters until I retired in 1995. I flew a CH-47 Chinook helicopter in Desert Storm in 1991-1992. I've been a member of the Gerton Fire and Rescue Department for the past eighteen years. Sylvia and I have been married for thirty-eight years. That's 266 years in dog years. Whatever. Sylvia is a Georgia girl.
James Sane purchased this Cottage in 2017
Why James Sane chose Gerton
I was raised 21 miles down the road from Gerton. We would come to Gerton for visits when I was growing up. I always wanted to live in Gerton. Now I do.
What makes this Cottage unique
I loved this property for many reasons. I can stand on my deck and view Bearwallow Mountain. Yes, bears do wallow there. It's just the most peaceful place to live. Great neighbors. And my cousin lived across the horse pasture from this house. The house that is Stone Cottage.

Lovely house and hosts
The house was wonderful.....great amenities, the kitchen had everything one could need, plenty of space.....some nice outdoor space complete with wild turkeys, bunnies, deer and squirrels. It was peaceful and quiet, about 25 minutes to Asheville, but closer to Chimney Rock, Lake Lure and the beautiful Flowering Bridge which Jim told us about, and which we visited- beautiful. Both Jim and Sylvia were very nice and helpful...... we had a great dinner at Rosetta's Kitchen, a vegetarian restaurant which Jim recommended to us among a few others. We really enjoyed our stay.
Sylvia and I are extremely pleased that Moyra and Rick enjoyed their stay at Stone Cottage. Glad the deer and turkeys decided to show up for Moyra. She enjoyed sitting in the yard reading and observing the animals. Sylvia and I hope they return soon for another stay at the cottage.
You should definitely book this place!!!!
Let me start by saying what a fantastic time we had at Stone Cottage. We were in the area to visit the Biltmore estate and do some hiking in Chimney Rock State Park. This cottage is the perfect spot in between both, super convenient to Asheville. Jim and Sylvia are very nice people and extremely hospitable; they called to ensure everything was good with our stay and even stopped over to give us some local recommendations to try out. Honorable mentions for local dining are White Duck Taco shop (the Watermelon Sangria is a must), Little Pigs BBQ (get extra hush puppies!) and Hill Top Ice Cream (all homemade Ice Cream).
The cottage is perfect for couples or families, there are a ton of movies and games pre-stocked for your entertainment, also satellite TV and Internet; you really can’t go wrong booking this place. At night the area is silent really nice and calming from the normal pace of things; it was great sitting out under the stars.
I can’t say enough about this place. Don’t stay in downtown Asheville, drive 15 mins and have this great place all to yourself with everything you can ask for. This is the only place we will stay when revisiting the area.
Sylvia and I are extremely pleased that our guests had a wonderful experience during their visit and stay at Stone Cottage. I especially like their comments about the places they enjoyed dining and visiting. I recommended Little Pigs BBQ. If you like BBQ, it's the best around. I think future guests will like their input also.
I enjoyed meeting this young couple. I would love to have them return to the cottage again.
Such a great cottage with friendly and helpful owners. This is one of the most well appointed places we have ever stayed - they have everything you need to make a nice meal - including lots of spices! They also go the extra mile with small details like keeping snacks , tea and coffee available along with honey, sugar, etc. Beautiful setting. We travel to Asheville often for appointments for our daughter and this is now our go to rental!
Such a great place to relax and rest!
This home is located in the mountains and is not only beautiful, but so secluded, quiet and relaxing. If you want a place to rest and recharge your batteries, this place is a great place to do it. Everything you need is at the house and the hosts are very helpful! We will definitely come back again! Thanks Jim and Sylvia!
Very relaxing stay
This place is a real gem. The house is stuffed with everything you need, very comfty, cosy and clean. Just minutes away from Chimney Rock state park and many other trails in the area. Jim and Sylvie were very nice hosts and took care of everything. We highly recommend this place for everyone who wants to do outdoor activities or just relax at a quiet location close to nature.
Wonderful couple. Sylvia and I are extremely pleased they enjoyed their stay at Stone Cottage, and the outing at Chimney Rock State Park hiking the scenic trails. Hope to see them again soon.
The Stone Cottage was wonderful! It is tastefully decorated, comfortable and quiet. Especially the main living room with a huge fireplace where you could spend the day just relaxing in that one room. My son and I were in the area for a fishing trip and rented the cottage for 3 nights. After the second night my son had contracted a stomach virus somewhere and we had to depart early. Jim offered me a free night's stay in the future. He also greeted us after we arrived and took the time to answer questions and offer advice. An outstanding host! Polite and kind and generous with his time. I would not hesitate to rent the cottage again.
A father and son fishing trip cut short. It was inspiring to meet David and Justin. You could tell that a great relationship existed between them. All you dad's out there, take your son or daughter fishing.
I hope David and Justin can come back to Stone Cottage soon.
