Almost Perfect Apartment

  • 4 of 5

This apartment is just off the Vieux Port, very convenient to most visitor sites and public transport. It is also next to Le Panier historic district, which is a fascinating place to walk around and enjoy old Marseilles. Good restaurants are everywhere (we highly recommend 29 Place de l'Huile across the port), and everything you need for an apartment stay is within walking distance.

The apartment is nearly as described. The bed is comfortable, the kitchen is nicely furnished (except for the wine bottle opener!), the bathroom is adequate, washer/dryer works, dishwasher is good, refrigerator is large. The only thing that was not as advertised is the air conditioning. We did not find any. This was not a problem for our visit in late April but I would not want to rent this apartment in the summer.

One thing we struggled with during our stay was language. The owner did not give us any information in English, either in advance or in the apartment. We arrived from the USA, which does not have a compatible cell phone system with Europe, but we were told to contact the owner by phone when we arrived. Luckily, we could send her a text message. When we arrived at the apartment we were met by a very nice manager who, unfortunately for us, spoke only French. With much pantomime and our poor French, we managed to understand most of what she told us, but we could not figure out her directions to the big Monoprix grocery store and we accidentally got temporarily locked out of the apartment by not understanding her directions regarding the 4 keys.

We are seasoned travelers who have rented "VRBO" apartments all over the world. The standard procedure is for the host to provide detailed written information, either in the guest's own language or in one they can use Google Translate to figure out. Many hosts send information in advance of the visit, others leave printed copies in the apartment that tell where to buy groceries, how to use the washer/dryer, etc. Most apartments supply city maps, but we had to get a map from the Hotel Intercontinental down the street. We would suggest that this hostess could make her apartment much more accessible to international visitors by providing detailed written information in French, English, and German. And please remember that Americans and Chinese are way behind the times concerning cell phone compatibility with Europe. We may not be able to telephone you from the airport!

Owner's Response: I am very surprised to read your comments, let me give you my answer: You have at your disposal a file containing everything you need to discover Marseille and its surroundings: city map, metro map, schedules of the maritime shuttles, visits to museums and exhibitions and a small book with the best addresses from Marseille. All these documents were available in French, English and German. Under the TV you also have all the instructions for use of household appliances. You also had a corkscrew but maybe you did not know the "screwpull" There is air conditioning, it will be brought up from the first heat, (it is a mobile air conditioning) I'm really sorry that you did not get this information on your arrival, I will remind Johanna and make a guide line in writing of all these details.

Great location - lovely apartment close to Vieux Port

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay in Marseille. Helene's friend met us in front of the apartment building upon our arrival around 1 PM .

Beautiful apartment in great location with beautiful view. Apartment was well equipped - in quiet elevator building one block from Old Port. Good wi-fi and TV.

Short walk to Tourist Information ( for day tours departure) and close to Supermarket U and bakeries for our baguettes.

We walked everywhere - including to MUCEM area and to le Panier area .

Thank you Helene for letting us stay in your lovely apartment ( and for the drinks you left us in the fridge!)

Lovely apartment in the old port

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely apartment in a brilliant location near the quai and with a lovely view. The apartment is compact but well designed and the owner has equipped it very thoughtfully. We had a small problem with air conditioning but the owner made every effort to sort it out within a few hours. Highly recommended.

Lovely apartment, excellent view and location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful weekend in Marseille and the experience was enhanced thanks to our stay in Hélène's apartment.

The pictures and the description are faithful to what we found: nice décor, which adds to the natural light coming through the tall windows; well-equipped; and super comfortable. Even though the outside temperature was high we didn't need to use the air conditioning, as it was enough to close the shades when we were out and later on open the windows wide. Everything worked well, inlcuding the wi-fi. The building is very quiet and has doors on two different streets (one closer to the Old Port, another to Le Panier).

The location is very convenient: far enough from the noise in the Old Port but very close to it and to Le Panier, plus restaurants, grocery stores, and public transportation. The view from the apartment is excellent, and we were treated with a full moon over Notre-Dame de la Garde.

Hélène, with who we corresponded, and Jean-Pascal, who showed us the apartment, were very responsive and friendly.

We highly recommend this apartment for a enjoyable stay in such a wonderful town.

Situation parfaite

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5
