About Robert Kirshner
We bought this place to escape from Cambridge on weekends. After pouring vast sums into renovations, we inexplicably moved to California. We come to Maine as often as we can, but the commute is tough. We hope you will enjoy this place as much as we do.
Robert Kirshner purchased this House in 2004
Why Robert Kirshner chose Friendship
The Johnson House was an inn for many decades, chiefly catering to people who came from Brooklyn to stay the whole summer. In one index of Maine hostelries, it was listed as "The Afterglow." The previous owners were well-known Maine artists: some of their work and much of their spirit is still in this house. This is a serene place with lots of room for you and yours. This house is fully winterized and a great place to be in the spring and the fall as well as the brief peak of summer.
What makes this House unique
The little cove gets its mud heated by the sun. When the tide comes in, it is surprisingly warm! The rock island is yours to explore and enjoy. Dawn is special from this house. Extra-large windows give a great water view in the morning. Or you can pull down the shades! Friendship is very dark at night. The stars seem close and extra bright.

Beautiful and comfortable, inside and out
We could not have enjoyed our stay more in this lovely home. After our annual New Year's weekend meeting spot in Vermont flooded, we thought there was no place that would feel as comfortable on short notice - but boy, were we wrong! Each bedroom was a good size, the house heated nicely with the forced air (and wood stove!), and the caretaker left us with everything we needed - from recycling bins and trash bags to towels and hand soap. Truly a wonderful spot in winter - I hope to return in the summer some time! PS - the walk down to the seashore is not to be missed!
We love it, too. We try to equip the house for rentals in the same way we use it ourselves, which we do as often as we can. Kathy is completely on top of things and ensures that you have what you need. Glad to hear that the house was warm enough for everybody to enjoy. When you bring your own fun, Friendship is a great place. Please do come in the summer!
We all enjoyed this lovely house and the area. The house has everything one would need to enjoy their stay--well stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, large fridge, nice large bedrooms, comfy living room and tons of books! We could not have been more pleased.
We're glad you enjoyed this big house with your friends. Friendship is a great place when you bring your own fun-- and people who dare to take a Thanksgiving swim are certainly in that category! And thank you for re-stocking the firewood. Glad you were cozy during very cold weather.
Excellent experience, lovely home conveniently located!
Had a wonderful experience at this vacation home. My large family enjoyed our time, relaxed and enjoyed the wonderful sunrises. Located about 30 minutes from Owls head light house and great restaurants. Fresh lobster bought just down the road and a very convenient country store for last minute items. Neighborhood is quite and we all enjoyed kayaking and eating alot of lobster. The owner was wonderful to work with, very responsive and informative about the area. Kathy was excellent for checking in and out. Overall 5 star review and we will be back to visit and relax in Maine again. Grab a book, glass of wine and put your feet up. Enjoy.
You know how to have fun! We're delighted you had such a satisfactory stay in November. It's a big house and there's plenty to do for energetic people like you!
This home was perfect in every way. The location is beautiful and the house was entirely pristine. Soooo clean and organized! We loved it! Thanks so much for making it available to others to enjoy.
I am very pleased you enjoyed our place on the coast of Maine. We love it and we're there as much as we can be. It is a pleasure to share it with others.
Beautifully appointed, spacious and comfortable. This house felt like home away from home!
We spent a very special birthday week in this house with our extended family. We had three generations together under one roof. Our youngest family member at four months old and our eldest family member at eighty-seven. We had singalongs on the back deck as the sun set. We kayaked together in the cove at high tide and also walked across the muddy ground to the rocks at low tide (definitely bring mucking boots or water shoes). We took long walks around the neighborhood and enjoyed all that Friendship had to offer. We found everything we could possibly need in the kitchen and bathrooms (all very clean and beautifully appointed). The property surrounding the house is breathtaking and we enjoyed wandering the grounds.
This is that place that gets you away from it all and this property is a gift because it is also not too far from Rockland, Camden, Port Clyde, Wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick etc. We are hoping to make this our annual reunion house.
If we had questions we knew Kathy would reply promptly and help out as needed.
Thank you Robert and Jayne for sharing your space with us.

Delighted that you made such good use of our place. We love it, too!
Friendship is a great place to make your own fun (as you did!) and also a good base for exploring the mid-coast.
We're very pleased to have Kathy M. as our representative on the spot: she is always thinking about ways to make your visit an enjoyable one.
Muck boots! Useful. But don't be too shy to walk around to the rock by way of the neighbors'. They are very friendly.
Huge disappointment !
Although the setting was beautiful when the place had an issue with the well leaving us with no water we had to scurry to find another place to stay on a holiday weekend for 7.We understand that things happen that are often out of a home owners control however we were informed that this had happened before and that the owner was told to take care of the problem before renting the cottage again. It ruined our family vacation. The owner refunded the days we did not stay but did no more than the minimum he could do to help us.
Very sorry that the pump at the bottom of our well gave out during your visit at the beginning of July. It was working on Saturday and Sunday and Monday and failed on Tuesday, July 3. It was not possible for the well technician to fix this immediately that day or on July 4th. In fact, it was quite a production, requiring locating the well head (3 1/2 feet below ground), bringing in a machine to excavate it, pulling the old pump from the well, inserting the new pump and hitching together all the required plumbing and electricity. Water was flowing again on Friday, July 6.
We do not expect to repeat this experience for about 20 years. We've had two happy sets of visitors since fixing the pump and Jayne and I are in Friendship now with plenty of water. Future visitors will have the benefit of the beautiful setting without the misery. I am sorry this happened to you and I understand your disappointment.
