About the property

Escape to the Peaceful side of Acadia National Park - A Cottage Great for Family

Lovely oceanfront home for relaxation and rejuvenation in the heart of Prospect Harbor and Acadia National Park Schoodic Region. Located next door to the Schoodic Arts Combs Art Studio, this home is an easy stroll to the Dorcas Library, Peninsula School or the Prospect Harbor Lighthouse.

Nestled in Prospect Harbor, the tidal flow offers the opportunity to swim, kayak, fish, collect sea glass or explore tidal pools. Two bedrooms allow for privacy and a large loft style space has 4 twin beds.

We hope you will make unforgettable memories on your Maine vacation! Our home was designed for families, and we would love to share it with yours. Our shores have been used for magazine wedding pictures and enjoyed by family and guests that want to explore the shoreline. Our beach has sand, rocks, sea glass, shells, and large granite ledges that invite a towel or chair.

The sunrise over the water is able to be viewed from the bedrooms and most other sitting area of the house. On a clear evening, one can watch the moon rise over the water and see the stars twinkle overhead. The Acadia National Park Schoodic Point Entrance is easily accessible at 3.5 miles away. If you desire, explore a wine tasting at the local Bartlett winery or shop the local Winter Harbor Farmer’s Market that offers fresh local produce.

Bar Harbor and Acadia's Main Entrance is available by car (about 50 minutes) or ferry (about 45 minutes). The ferry service runs 4-5x daily from Winter Harbor (5-10 minutes drive from the house) late May through Columbus Day into Downtown Bar Harbor. The free Island Explorer bus system takes visitors from downtown Bar Harbor into the Main Section of the park.

Brochures for events and attractions are available for you to explore. We hope you will enjoy the house amenities and encourage yourself to kick up your feet and relax! Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, wine or what ever you fancy. Lobsters and fresh seafood are available nearby cooked, or use the lobster pot in the kitchen and have your own lobster bake! Cuisinart coffee and hot water maker, ice cream maker, and waffle iron are all available in the kitchen and pantry for your use if desired. Top quality bed linens and fixtures throughout home.

About Jennifer DeSisto

I am an Occupational Therapist that works primarily with children, teens and young adults and specialize in school based and mental health therapy. My husband Bill is a Chemical Engineering Professor at the University of Maine in Orono. We have four children, ages 23, 22, 19 and 14.

Jennifer DeSisto purchased this house in 2007

Why Jennifer DeSisto chose Gouldsboro

My husband Bill and I fell in love with the Maine coast when I was pregnant with our first born son, in 1994. When we settled in Maine, we knew we wanted to have a home there someday. When we found this piece of property in 2006, we bought it right away and built our home the following year with the guidance and expertise of a local artist and builder. We have enjoyed summers there ever since. Now that our children are older, we are not able to go as often, and we hoped that others may enjoy it and make many happy memories.

What makes this house unique

Our favorite things are exploring the sea shore with the ever changing birds, sea glass, and creatures, jogging the "Schoodic Loop" inside the Park, fish or watch the lobstermen bring in their catch at the Town Pier. Every evening that we are able, we walk to the lighthouse and enjoy the sunset where the hues of pink, violet and yellow reflect off the the lighthouse and sea. Schoodic Arts and Schoodic Educational Research Center have fun and educational programs to enjoy.

Magical Family Getaway on the Coast: an abundance of comfort and beauty and peace and happiness

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed for three nights of perfect bliss in July, and I'm still basking in the memory of how perfect and beautiful our stay was. The moment we walked in the door I was enveloped in a sense of peace that lasted the whole time we were there. And then we saw the welcome basket! Goodies and treats for the kids and us, AND a note urging us to make use of the extras we found in the fridge and freezer: I felt so welcomed, and right at home in a way that I never could have expected.

There were so many details about the home that made our stay extra special: I'll just list some to save space:

-the unusually beautiful lighting all over the house: it created such a lovely atmosphere

-the gorgeous kitchen: soft-close drawers, deep sink, state-of-the-art faucet and appliances, and yes, the open plan others have mentioned, so I never felt like I was off by myself even when I was doing meal prep: that was a huge positive for me : )

-the super-convenient laundry/pantry right off the kitchen (a great out of the way place to store our coolers)

-the condiments and extras available there: two of our sons weren't feeling well when we arrived, and there was even a can of chicken noodle soup!

-the super spacious bathrooms

-the breakfast nook: perfect for eating and board games and coloring!

-the coloring pages! We chose one and everyone worked on a part of it as a souvenir to take home

-the kayaks: perfect for exploring the cove

-the gas fireplace

-the upstairs balcony

-the upstairs reading nook just inside the balcony: my daughter thought she was in heaven with her *own* room, her *own* chair, her *own* balcony!

-each of us having our own space, even with the open plan, even with a large family (8 of us) so we could all snuggle down with a good book during quiet moments of the morning or evening

-the *extremely* comfortable bed in the master bedroom

-the suggestions Jennifer gave us for local attractions: we especially enjoyed watching the boats coming in and out of the harbor at the town pier with their catch of lobster

-the location (of course!) right on the rocky shore! Ahh, bliss! We spent hours and hours exploring at low tide and hunting for sea glass or shells or finding crabs, and just breathing in the salt sea air

-the model of the lighthouse and the lobster boat right across the street: our 7 year old *loved* that!

-the historic markers within super easy walking distance

I could go on and on.We had a wonderful, unforgettable time! So thankful!

Gorgeous home in an amazing part of the US.

  • 5 of 5

The hosts of this home do their best to make sure you feel at home and to get you to fall in love with the Schoodic area as much as they have. They kept in touch offeeing suggestions and giving tips - all of which were very helpful. The home is fully setup for you to enjoy family meals. The views are amazing! The kids loved the space upstairs and the ability to spread out. A few days to visit was just not enough. We kayaked, hiked, visited the institute to learn about tidal creatures and picked sea glass. We were heartbroken when the time came to leave. There is so much to see and do; wish we had stayed longer. We hope to return again very soon to do some biking around Schoodic, do more hiking on Mt Desert Island and take in a boat ride/cruise. Maybe we can even explore other parts of Maine when we return - it truly is a beautiful state!

A true Maine Treasure

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin? First off, I made a mistake on which day I was supposed to arrive. I reached out to the owners and asked if they had availability for the night, unfortunately it had been booked, but that they would let me know as soon as the property was available from the turnover. They reached out to me to let me know when it was open. The communication could not have been smoother and the booking was very clean from the VRBO standpoint. After a long trip we were just happy to get there, but once we pulled in and saw the charming house with the bay in the back we got a big smile on our face. It got even wider once we opened the door. This well appointed cottage truly captures the feeling of coastal Maine. Very clean, comfortable and quaint, we immediately felt at home. We loved the ocean breezes coming in form the bay. We stayed for 7 nights and enjoyed every minute. The tidal are in back is great for beach combing and the local towns of Winter Harbor and Corea Village are quintessential Northern Maine enclaves with the locally owned restaurants featuring the local favorites, shops, galleries and scenic views, I have to say this was one of our best vacations. What a treat!

I would HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone who wants to unplug and get a taste of the local Maine life in a warm, welcoming community.

Fabulous home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in Schoodic sunrise cottage for our trip to Acadia.

Jennifer's place couldn't have been more comfortable for our group of 8 including our friends who travelled all the way from Sweden.

Jennifer gave us tons of information prior to our stay to make sure we had everything we needed and checked in with us while we were there.

When we arrived the place was spotless and well equipped and Jennifer even left us home baked cookies and a basket of local treats to enjoy. The home is beautifully decorated and well thought out with everything you may need right where it should be even the use of their kayaks and life jackets!

There are brochures and travel books available to help plan out your daily adventures in the area.

One of our favorite spaces was the loft area with cozy bed spaces for all of the kids. The gathering areas are comfortable and the view of the harbor is amazing.

We spent our days exploring Acadia and were always thankful to return to the calm of the Schoodic cottage. Friends familiar with the area encouraged us to stay on the Schoodic penninsula and we were thankful they did as Mt. Desert Island can be crowded and hectic during busy times. After action filled days we were able to make dinners out on the grill and enjoy wine on the deck while the kids searched for sea glass and creatures in the tide pools and kayaked on the calm waters of the bay right in the back yard.

Our only regret is that we didn't plan to stay longer. We would have loved to have more time to just stay at Sunrise cottage relaxing and enjoying the beautiful home and surroundings.

We have stayed at many Homeaway rentals and this one is tops.

Thank you Jennifer!

The house was wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was very well stocked. Comfortable furnishings! Beautiful garden! The best hospitality we've ever received from an owner! And 2 bald eagles landed right in front of the house at low tide!!! They hung around for about 30 minutes. We were able to get some nice pics.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

From beginning to end our stay at Schoodic Sunrise Cottage was amazing. Prior to our trip, Jennifer emailed with information regarding the cottage and Prospect Harbor. She was such a pleasure to work with and a great source for family friendly activities/ dining. The cottage was absolutely stunning, the pictures did not do the the cottage justice. The Cottage and property are well maintained and the atmosphere made it easy to relax. The views from the windows are spectacular! The garden leading to the beach was beautiful and my children enjoyed themselves immensely beach combing. We are looking forward to staying at the cottage again! Thank you for your friendly hospitality!
