About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Baths, Sleeps 6 (6 adults)

In 1954 a little boy ditched a bike in the woods and the result of that deed has become a worldwide sensation.

Little did Donnie Puz know that when he left that old bicycle down in the “swamp” as it was called by the boys he played with that his bike would be found years later high in a tree to the consternation of some and delight of others.

Donnie’s family had lost their home and their father lost his life in a house fire in 1954. The community of Vashon – Maury Island did what communities do in such tragedies, they donated money and clothes and items the family would need.

One item was that bicycle. It was old with hard rubber tires and tricycle-like handlebars. It was not cool and Don didn’t like it. He was just a kid so we can excuse him for his ungratefulness. He left that bicycle down there where it wasn’t discovered for twenty or thirty years. Research is ongoing to find reference to the first actual sighting.

Don’s mother, Helen Puz, found a house at Center for her family of two boys and three girls to replace the one that was destroyed. It was built in 1920 with an addition to the original around 1940. Helen Puz was a frugal woman and she did not do much remodeling over the years except to upgrade the kitchen.

The owners have endeavored to keep the house much as it was when Don, his brother Tom and sisters JoAnn, Madeline and Rosemary grew up there. The bathroom has been upgraded with a new toilet and basin but the original claw foot tub remains. A concession has been made to the trend of today and a king size bed is in the master bedroom “suite”, and queen size beds are in the two other bedrooms.

A modern washer and dryer now sit within easy reach on the enclosed back porch and a portable dishwasher hides in the kitchen nook.

The house has cable television and a flatscreen TV. Although Helen Puz never got into computers and the internet, the house has been “wired” for WiFi for your use.

The enclosed back porch is the perfect place to have your morning cup of coffee while watching the sunrise over Mt. Rainier. In the evening enjoy the sunset glow on the mountain with your glass of wine.

But there is no hot tub, no pool, no zip line. If you are looking for a luxury rental this is not for you.

Bicycle in the Tree memorabilia is pictured on a wall in the living room with accounts of the tragic fire in 1954 and stories about the Bicycle in the Tree. Of course, photos of the Bicycle in the Tree are everywhere and one picture that shows Don Puz, now a grown man with grandchildren posing with his newest bicycle in a tree. Look for it among the photos.

The Bicycle in the Tree House tm is centrally located on the main highway within walking distance of Vashon High School, the Vashon community pool. It’s an easy walk or quick drive to the Vashon Performing Arts Center at Center, just catty corner from the Roasterie where you can buy a tasty cup of coffee. Oh, and yes, a short walk to that unwanted bicycle, still in the embrace of the most famous tree in the world!
