Great secluded mountain cabin

  • 3 of 5

We had a group of adults staying for the weekend and enjoyed the house. The kitchen is very well stocked including a pantry with all the cooking staples and then some. We cooked several meals and had everything we needed. To us, the front deck was the highlight of the house with a beautiful mountain view, grill, and nice fire pit. Our weather was great and we spent most of our time outside soaking up nature. We brought our own firewood and enjoyed using the fire pit. If you plan to use it, bring your own wood. We enjoyed the location because of it's seclusion. You will not have to worry about hearing or seeing any neighbors, it is completely private. The driveway up to the house could potentially be challenging if you don't have all wheel drive, but we didn't have any issues. It looked like they had made some recent improvements to the driveway. You make a little trade off for the privacy as it took us about 25 minutes to drive to town in Black Mountain, but it's a beautiful drive.

We learned that you need to clean up after meals quickly because if you don't the ants will show up in the kitchen. After we learned the lesson and paid extra attention to keep food and any beverages off the counter we didn't have any more problems. Some critters are to be expected, you are in the middle of the woods after all.

Bring a bag or two of ice if you plan to use much, the automatic ice maker doesn't work and there are just 2 ice trays in the freezer. The owners had a large cooler on the deck that would be perfect for storing extra ice/food/beverages.

The "game room" in the basement is an unfinished basement space, just concrete floors and unpainted masonry block walls; we didn't spend any time down there, the rest of house offered much more enjoyable spaces.

A few things about the house were rough around the edges but most were to be expected considering the setting. All in all, it was a great stay and we would definitely return in the future.

Great open house for a group!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great girls retreat at the lodge. Renee was very responsive to questions. The driveway is a steep pull but no problem with AWD or 4WD. Quiet and peaceful! A book with info on Wifi, check-out procedures, TV instructions, etc would be helpful for those of us who are not technologically in the know! All in all, we loved the stay!

Would not recommend and will never stay here again

  • 1 of 5

I have never written a bad review, but our experience was ridiculous. I was hoping the owners would make this right but they have not. We arrived the afternoon of Fri June 1. It was 84 degrees, & the house was warm, so we turned the thermostat down. The AC never kicked on. My husband spent a good 20-30 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong, looking at the breaker and the unit, etc. Finally saw the fan in the outside unit was demolished. I reported this immediately. I got a reply back from Renee that they knew this was broken and it would be repaired Tuesday. This irritated me because they knew it before we arrived and didn't have the courtesy to notify us, not to mention that we spent 50% of our vacation time with no working AC. They were not even apologetic. Sat. night, we washed a load of laundry, and found a load of WET linens in the dryer. We were nice enough to finished drying and folding the owner's laundry, so it wouldn't mold, before we dried our laundry. Later in the week, we went to wash another load of laundry and the washer would not spin. We had to had wring every piece and spend hours running the dryer trying to get our clothes to dry.

The gas range almost asphyxiated us. There is a horrible gas leak. We sat outside while warming up food because the house was so toxic, but because the windows on the house all had to be open, due to no AC, we were still bothered by the smell. We ended up heating food on the outdoor grill.

We were wanting to watch the Stanley cup finals, but the TV is only a smart TV, so you can only watch pre-recorded shows, nothing live.

We killed 2-15 ants in the master bathroom around the window every morning and night.

Our instructions said "Please place garbage in the outdoor bear resistant trash bin." There was only a regular rubbermaid trash can outside, so we had to keep the trash in the house all week, as we did not want to risk a problem.

Because of all these issues, we asked for a partial refund of at least 2 nights. Dan called and said they "couldn't afford" to give us any kind of a refund, but would comp us some time "anytime". I replied back to them a week later the dates I wanted in 2019. He replied not only could I not have those dates, but I could only have 1 week night and 1 weekend night. I asked him to call me so we could have a discussion, as we certainly didn't get what we paid for for a week in this house. He has never returned my call or emails. Take heed before renting.

Beautiful Getaway

  • 4 of 5

My husband, myself, and 6 other friends rented this beautiful property for Memorial Day weekend. It was a very comfortable home and had all the amenities we could have wanted! The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, cooking pans, pantry items, and cleaning supplies. The house was very clean and while there were 8 of us staying in the home, we did not feel like we were on top of each other. Renee' was very responsive in helping make sure we were able to get into the property.

Suggestion to visitors:

The listing says 4 wheel drive is recommended. I cannot emphasize this enough! Two of the cars were unable to make the steep drive and we had to leave them at the bottom and carry the groceries up. A portion of the drive way up was too soft with not enough rocks to provide the necessary traction. I would either bring a car with 4 wheel drive or rent a car to avoid the hike up with your items.

Suggestion to property owner:

The white sign outside of the drive way is far too small. I would encourage better signage as many of us drove to the very top and completely missed the entrance.
