Photos and Description of this 10 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Homps - Chateau de Puissentut

Delightful chateau in tranquil surroundings - perfect country getaway

Chateau de Puissentut is a medieval chateau brought up-to-the-minute with a stylish, comfortable, modern interior.

There are 10 en-suite bedrooms: 6 on the ground floor and 4 on the first floor. 6 of the bedrooms are doubles and 4 are either doubles or twins as desired. The chateau can comfortably sleep 20 people.

Two of the ground floor bedrooms are wheelchair accessible and so too is the entire ground floor area.

On the ground floor their is a spacious dining room, professionally equipped kitchen, lounge-study with wifi, two toilets, food storage room and a utility area with washing machine.

The first-floor lounge is equipped with a large TV with DVD and satellite. There is also a stereo, a library and board games.

Internet is also available in all the bedrooms with a cable (you can have wifi in all the rooms if you bring 'airports' with you). In the cooler months the house if fully heated and there are also wood-burning stoves. No air conditioning is needed as the thick stone walls keep the house cool in Summer.

Outside the courtyard can comfortably sit 25+ people for outside dining and there is also a BBQ area with another dining table and chairs.

From the courtyard you go down to the lawn, bordered by flower beds, which is ideal for children to play games on or to relax on away from the pool. The pool is situated on the terrace below the lawn. It is equipped with 10 sun loungers, pool chairs and umbrellas. Close to the pool is a shaded bar with a fridge so you relax at the bar and keep an eye on the kids.

There are several secluded spots throughout the garden where you can get away for a quiet sit down or to relax in a hammock.

About Angela Wood

We are an English-Dutch couple with two young children. We bought Chateau Puissentut in 2011 and moved down with our family to begin renovating it. At that time one wing was inhabitable. It took us 2 years to fully renovate and refurbish the chateau and we opened to the public for holidays in July 2013.

When not being used by people like you for holidays the house is run as a retreat and workshop centre. In particular we run retreats for people recuperating from cancer, detox retreats and stress reduction and coaching retreats for business leaders.

If you are interested in our retreats you can take a look at our websites: www.puyssentut.org www.chateaudepuissentut.com

Angela Wood purchased this chateau / country house in 2011

Why Angela Wood chose Gers

We were looking to buy a large property where we could set up a retreat centre. We needed roughly 600sqm of living space plus extra buildings. We originally started looking in northern Spain but couldn't find properties either large enough or affordable so we had a rethink and decided to look in SW France which was an area we already knew and liked very much.

It didn't take us long to find Chateau Puissentut. As soon as we saw it we absolutely knew it was exactly the right place to fulfill our dream. It was not only large enough but the house felt incredible inviting (even though it was freezing cold, half ruined and totally unfurnished), and it has a great setting. There are no near neighbours and it looks out across a very pretty valley with the Pyrenees mountains in the distance.

We love this part of France because it is so unspoilt. The Gers is not really on the tourist map which means you can have a uniquely French experience staying here. The local people are also very friendly and polite which makes it a very welcoming part of France. And there are just so many lovely villages and wonderful properties. Although the Gers is now a relatively poor region at one time it must have been exceedingly wealthy as every village has a wonderful house or chateau.

What is lovely about the villages, aside from their quaintness, amazing stone buildings and fascinating fortifications, is that every village has its own 'fete' (party) which can last several days and some even have several throughout the Summer. While the locals are very open to anyone joining in they offer a fascinating insight into traditional village life.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The wonderful thing about Chateau Puissentut is that it feels so welcoming. Everyone who visits loves the house. It is really very charming and full of character. This added to the beautiful, tranquil location makes it a real haven. Everyone who comes here immediately relaxes, you simply can't help yourself.

Car: necessary

The Gers, at the eastern tip of Gascony, is an undiscovered, rural idyll. Sparsely populated and with few tourists it provides a great spot to rest and unwind in complete peace and quiet. If you want to experience traditional, rural french life this is the place to come.

Here the pace of life is slow and gentle. There is no need to hurry any where, instead take time to enjoy the gentle beauty of the natural environment and enjoy a long lunch.

During the 100 years war this part of the Gers was under English rule and so often came under siege from the French. It was also an area to which the Cathar religion and Protestantism spread and so came under attack too from the Catholics. As a result all the ancient villages around and about were fortified and situated on hilltops. It is a joy to visit these delightful villages that cling to their hilltop perches, with their numerous chateaux. If it were not for the occasional passing car you would imagine yourself to be still in medieval times.

Some of our favourite villags are Monfort, Sarrant, Maubec, St Clar and Homps.

Towns: Auch, Lectoure and Condom

Being on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella the regional towns were significant religious centres. Each town is dominated by a cathedral lending stature and bringing wealth to these otherwise rather small, market towns. The former wealth is visible in the grand houses and stone work.

Being a rural region the emphasis is on local produce. Foi gras is the speciality and no meal would be finished without an Armagnac 'degustive'. There are some wonderful local producers and vineyards to visit where you can see how these are produced and sample them.

The vibrant local markets are a must. Not only is locally grown produce available - fruit and vegetables, aritsanal bread, cheeses and meats, foi gras, armagnac and floc - but they are an important meeting place for the locals who gather to exchange news and chat. The liveliest markets are Tuesday in Fleurance and Friday in Lectoure.

The local village fetes are also a wonderful experience. Open to everyone they often span a full weekend with lots of activities and meals to join in. Several villages also organise night markets where you can eat, enjoy local entertainment and do a spot of shopping.

For children there are plenty of water parks, including a (man-made) beach at St Clar's 'base de loisirs', as well as go-karting, water-skying, horse-riding, star gazing and more.

Cycling holidays

The Gers is perfect for cycling. Rolling hills (which are never too high) make it a great place for interval training and create variety with a different view from every hill top. What'smore, the roads are very quiet, many of them are single track, which means your trips are almost car-free and therefore safe for all the family.

We can arrange bespoke cycling holidays for groups which include activities for those partners who don't want to cycle. For example we can arrange for partners to join you at particular restaurants on your cycling route or we can arrange massage treatments and yoga lessons at the chateau.

We are happy to host weddings at the Chateau. Please see our website for further information: www.chateaudepuissentut.com

Monfort (3km) is the nearest village with basic amenities (boulangerie, post office, restaurant, grocers, hairdressers). T

Mauvezin and Fleurance are small market towns (both 15 minutes away by care) with full amenities such as banks, petrol stations and supermarkets. Lectoure also has a good market, cafes and restaurants, and some lovely shops ideal for purchasing gifts and momentos (25 minutes drive).

Auch (30 mins) and Condom (35 mins) are larger towns offering more shopping and dining opportunities.

Vibrant Toulouse is 1 hour away.

Both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts are less than 2.5 hours drive away, which means you can do a day trip to the coast if you wish.

The Pyrenees are a 2-2.5 hour drive away. The nearest spa town is Bagneres de Luchon, where there is also a ski resort. Good skying is also possible at St Lary Soulan.

The nearest airport is Toulouse, Blagnac (50 mins by car). Carcassonne (1 hour 45 mins by car) and Bordeaux (2 hours by car) are also options. Car hire is essential.

Trains arrive either at Agen or Toulouse (both 1 hour drive to the chateau).

From Calais it is an 9 hour drive.

From Paris it is an 8 hour drive.
