We are a family of four and live in Southern California. While we enjoy the benefits of the city we enjoy getting away from it all when we go on vacation. We have been enjoying the splendors of the North Shore for over a decade. We joke that we bought our house in Kauai as an insurance policy so our kids will always want to vacation with us -- even when they are teenagers! They love being so close to the beach and go there every day when we're on island. We love snorkeling, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, surfing, hiking and running. The kids also love to play in the large private yard. And we all love having plenty of room to invite our friends and family to come share our corner of paradise. It's great to have so much space to BBQ or venture out to one of the terrific local restaurants or best of all, a beach picnic at sunset!

We fell in love with Hale Alealea the moment we saw it and hope you will too. The location across from the beach offers peak-a-boo ocean views, tranquil breezes and the peaceful sounds of crashing waves. Hale Alealea combines this with the privacy of sitting one property away from the beachfront. The 15,000 sq' street-to-street lush private lot gives us beautiful tropical grounds to enjoy from so many covered and uncovered lanais, balconies & patios. The comfortable, spacious house is the perfect size for family and friends. From the comfort of indoors we can enjoy the views from many large windows, skylights and sliding glass doors. We also love relaxing on the covered lanai, watching the waves through the swaying coconut palms, listening to the sounds of the trade winds, soothing waves or cooling sun showers.
It's hard to leave this tropical oasis yet it is so close to the best snorkeling, surfing and hiking on the island. Checking the surf each morning with a cup of coffee in hand, followed by a walk around the gardens is a great start to a day. The house is so calm and private - yet you feel the rest of island calling with its adventures, whenever you are ready to explore. When you return, a soothing outdoor shower awaits. Watching the sunset, while grilling a fabulous dinner - a perfect day in paradise!
"We love everything about this house, this neighborhood, this island.
From the beaches to the trails, from the gardens to the mountains, this truly is paradise. Thank you for allowing us to stay at Hale Alealea while we enjoyed it all."
(from guest book)
Our family spent 2 relaxing weeks at Hale Alealea in Ha'ena. Four adults and two children (ages 10 and 12). Upon arrival we found the house VERY clean and ready for our stay (this was our 4th family trip to Kauai and our first away from Princeville). It was a pleasure to be in such a quiet and lush beach town. We needed to contact the management agency a couple of times for minor items and they were quick to respond and even came by once to assist with a small issue.
Location - Hale Alealea is in a quiet (except for the local roosters) beach neighborhood. The dirt road leading to the house has very little traffic except for those staying in homes on the road. We were comfortable allowing our children to roam around the neighborhood and beach with out us. There were heavy rains before and during our stay and the road was full of fairly deep pot holes (literally, every inch of the dirt road). It made for a very slow and bumpy trip to and from Kuhio Hwy. We would have considered an SUV if we knew about the road before our arrival . Evan the property manger commented after visiting us one day that she needed to rest in the driveway after the trip on the dirt road to the house. Fortunately, about one week into the trip, the county came with machinery to grade the road. After two days of grading the road was smooth as pavement. This was not a major issue for us but should be considered if traveling with elderly or those that get motion sick easily. We considered it part of our experience being in an authentic beach town on the north shore.
There are two beach easements on either end of the road that leads to Kepuhi beach. Some swimming areas at both ends when the seas are calm.
Hale Alealea - The house has four comfortable bedrooms and three bathrooms. Our children loved the outdoor shower after a day at the beach. We spent many evenings on the very large lanai off the kitchen. We used the BBQ on the lanai many times for dinner. The big kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals (which we did every day). The property grounds are full of manicured mature plants. The home also had a full washing machine and dryer on the ground floor just off the driveway. A great convenience.
The owners of this property take great care in maintaining this home. The description of the home is 100% accurate. We would stay in Hale Alealea again!
Maholo Hale Alealea owners for sharing your Hale Ohana.
This home is clean and comfortable. It is surrounded by a beautiful private garden with a view of the ocean from the large lanai. We left the louvered windows opened through out the house which allowed us to feel the wonderful tropical ocean breeze that makes Hawaii so special. The house is on a peaceful country road. Short walk to the sandy beach and cafe for coffee. My favorite near by restaurant was The Bistro. This house is a great get a away. Glad we discovered it. Highly recommend. Would definitely go back.
I had the pleasure of staying at Hale Alealea earlier this month for a girls getaway, and it was fantastic! The house was spacious, light and airy, and it seemed always the perfect temperature. The kitchen was great. We brewed fresh coffee every morning and laid out an array of fresh tropical fruit for ourselves. Make sure you visit the nearby Waipa Farmers Market on Tuesdays. The fruit selection was incredible!
The lanai was the perfect place to relax and enjoy the front garden view and the "peekaboo" ocean view, and there is ample room. From there, we could gauge how calm the water was. There is very easy access to stroll along the sand as well as to venture out snorkeling. All we had to do was walk straight out the front yard and under the stilts of the property in front, and we were on the beach and ready to go.
There is a restaurant and an art gallery/cafe in walking distance, but we were drawn to nearby Sushigirl for the poke bowls and sushi rolls. So fresh and just a short drive away. And, there are plenty of other dining options and markets also just a short drive away.
All in all, it was a luxurious getaway. Very relaxing, spacious, and beautiful. It was my first time to Kauai, and I look forward to returning. I highly recommend this property!
My family of seven recently spent 10 days at this house. It is, as others have said, extremely well located (we love Ha'ena) and beautifully appointed. Truly a lovely home. I would just give a heads up that the main floor living area gets extremely warm during the day when outside temperatures are in the upper 80s or higher, as they were when we were there. Fortunately, the owners are now working on this but you might want to check. If the property management company says you can have a portable air conditioner, do not believe them. They promised this for months and then, three days before our arrival, said they didn't know what we were talking about - despite many confirmations and the knowledge that we were bringing an elderly person with breathing problems. No rent reduction was offered for their failure.
My husband and another couple have been vacationing on Kaua'i together since 2003. We love Haena because of its neighborhood feel and because of its proximity to Tunnels and Kepuhi beach. The place we used to stay became too expensive and a friend recommended Hale Alealea. When we arrived we were immediately enchanted by the large common area, open kitchen, and two large en suite bedrooms. The lanai faces the ocean and is delightfully breezy and comfortable. We enjoy watching the sunrise and sunset, and we met and became friendly with the people who own the house across the street. They allowed us to cross their property so we could walk directly to the beach morning and evening, and invited us for pupus towards the end of our stay. It's great to be able to walk to Tunnels, but Kepuhi is our favorite beach because the coral is still very much alive and there's plenty of sea life to see. The house is very comfortable and so relaxing--we found it very easy to spend a lot of time there. We hope to return very soon!
We had a group of 6 adults and 2 children (8 years old) that had a wonderful time at the house. The beach in front of the house was within easy walking distance and a great place to watch sunrises and sunsets. The beach had nice sand with a reef break that allowed for the kids to play in the swallow water and see some pretty cool marine life before the bigger waves of the north shore. The house was a comfortable landing spot from daily adventures with all the great ammenitiies as described. The lanais made for memorable tropical BBQ meals and providied plenty of room for our group. Jerri was easy to deal with and helpful in making this a wonderful family vacation. The roosters are a Kauai thing all over the island, so bring earplugs if sensitive to that. We loved the property and would gladly return!
