About Helen Webster

The property is owned by Helen and Merritt Webster. After living in several states including NY, PA and TX Helen retired to her favorite state, Maine. Maine is a place of peace and rugged beauty. One of Helen's passions is cooking. She and Merritt are both avid gardeners.and have created beautiful seaside gardens. on the property. Merritt is a native Mainer with sea-salt in his blood with many generations of sailors and fishermen preceding him. He loves anything to do with the water and also has a passion for woodworking. We both love nature and soak up as much as we can. We love to travel in Maine and beyond. Living next door we are available to meet your needs and to share our extensive knowledge of the area.

Helen Webster purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Helen Webster chose MidCoast - Penobscot Bay

The rocky coast of Maine is a natural wonder. The cottage sits several feet above the water. It provides a stunning view of the cove with it's ragged coastline jutting out in the water framed by evergreens. You can access the pebbly private beach by stairs

What makes this cottage unique

Located at the end of a private dirt road the property is very quiet and peaceful. The cove is a wonderful place to kayak or for more adventure you can paddle to the open sea. Nestled close to the water's edge the view is every changing. The sparkle of the water is magic. Osprey love to fish here along with a wide array of birds including frequent bald eagles. It is a great place to read or just sit and relax.

Beautiful location and charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in this beautiful and peaceful location with my husband and adult daughter. The cottage was perfect for the three of us, with plenty of space to relax and read. The cottage has a great character, is lovingly decorated with seaside themed ornaments, and has heating so it was warm even though it was cold and windy in the early season. Everything is clean and the kitchen, while compact, has a great coffee machine plus all you need for home cooking and a great view!

Our hosts were kind and very helpful, providing lots of local information and tips, and directing us to the local excellent fish merchant.

We would definitely go back

Relaxing and wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

My step mom and I stayed a week at this lake retreat. We drove all over Maine and found the location to be good for wanting to see and do. The house and the view of the lake are peaceful and rejuvenating. Helen was wonderful and friendly and provided a lot of information on what to see and do. However, she wasn't too keen on the Stephen King tour I wanted to take :) Wasn't much of a King fan but that's okay.

The Best

  • 5 of 5

I saw this cottage on line in June of 2014 and had to book it as soon as I could. We spent one week in this cottage between July 18 and July 24, 2015. It was the best place I have ever stayed in for a vacation. It was very comfortable, on water front property with flowers everywhere, and not far from Rockland, Boothbay or Camden. Acadia National Park was close enough to spend a whole day there and still get back before dark. Helen & Merritt were great hosts. They made it very clear that if we needed anything, we only need to ask. (We didn't need anything, the cottage had everything we needed.) Helen did however bring fresh baked blueberry muffins over one morning and they were wonderful. It was fun watching the goldfinches, chickadees and chipmunks outside the big picture window. I would recommend this cottage to anyone who wants to get away from stuffy hotel rooms to enjoy a vacation of peace, or shopping or sightseeing or all of the above. Thank you Helen & Merritt for sharing your little piece of wonderful.

Charming & Delightful Cottage on the Water

  • 5 of 5

We had the most restful and relaxing stay in this lovely rental owned by Merritt and Helen Webster. The photos of the cottage are exactly what we got, but outside in the backyard there are no words to describe the beautiful view of the ocean and Merritt's gardens. Everywhere you look you see the beauty of God's creation! We took short day trips but were always glad to get back to the quietness of the cottage. We recommend highly.

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about our wonderful week at Cove's Edge! The location - peaceful and private, the views - stunning, the cottage - charming. The cottage itself was adorable, and had all the amenities we needed - a fully functional kitchen, shower with good water pressure, and a comfortable bed and futon (there were 3 of us). It was clean and organized, and was obviously tended to with loving care. The grounds were lovely, as Helen and Merritt are both excellent gardeners. There were fresh flowers on the table when we arrived, and Helen gave us lavender from her garden as we prepared to leave. She also baked us the most delicious blueberry muffins - what a treat! Helen and Merritt are lovely hosts - very helpful and kind, but also happy to give privacy. The best part of Cove's Edge is location, though. Directly on the water. Just a lawn and a few steps to the beach. I went every afternoon at low tide for some beach-combing, which was ridiculously relaxing. I fell asleep each night to the sounds of small lapping waves and the sounds of the seals (at low tide, they gather on two big rocks nearby). We also occupied ourselves with the comings and goings of the (very active) bird feeder (goldfinches and cardinals), a woodchuck who checked us out from the beach stairs, a chipmunk, and a few squirrels. Although we had 2 days of rain, the view of the water from the kitchen table was enough to keep us happy. The cottage is also very close to some great spots in Thomaston (the prison store), Rockland (Brass Compass, Quilt Divas quilt shop, shopping on Route 1), Owl's Head (the transportation museum is pretty amazing, even if you're not into that kind of thing, and go to the Owl's Head General Store and get a 7-Napkin Burger), Camden (the Once a Tree shop had some real finds), and Belfast (FIddelheads art/craft supply was adorable). We also took a drive up the Big Chicken Barn in Ellsworth, where we spent 3 solid hours looking a used books and antiques - that place is huge! Since returning to the real world, I have recommended this cottage to quite a few people, all of whom were interested as soon as I showed them a picture of the view. Truly a gem of a place! Highly recommended!

The Mid coast is perhaps the best place to start exploring Maine's 3,500 miles of coastline including it's numerous inlets, fishing villages and bays along with 2,000 islands. This area and Acacia National Park are the only places on the East Coast where the mountains meet the sea. The views of Penobcot Bay are world class. You must drive to the top of Mt Battie ! Locally Wyeth landscapes abound with the Olson House and the Farnsworth Museum just a few miles from the cottage. Other nearby attractions are a ferry to Monhegan Island, perhaps the most beautiful of Maine's islands. Great shops, restaurants, lighthouses and parks are a short distance away. Boating, swimming and sunbathing are available in pristine lakes or along several miles of sand beaches on the ocean. Other activities in the area are whale - watching and puffin boat rides along with helicopter, glider and plane rides. Mountains are at the edge of the sea for climbing. Acadia Natl. Park Park is about two hrs. away. New England's largest botanical coastal garden is nearby as well. Sample the delectable locally caught seafood including lobster, crab, shrimp. oyster, mussels ,clams and an assortment of fin fish.
