This family home has the prime position overlooking Hope Cove beach.
Hope Cove is in the South Hams District of South Huish and in one of Devon's loveliest places. The name 'Hope' probably comes from the Norse word 'Hop' meaning bay or inlet. Close to many well know beaches it is about 5 miles west of Salcombe and south-west of Kingsbridge. The two beaches, are split by a small headland and the whole is sheltered by the large westerly headland of Bolt Tail.
It has a rich history and dates back to the mid-18th Century, used a fisherman's retreat and private home for many years. Despite its age however, the rooms are considerably more spacious than your average cottage and 'The Watch House' has been updated to make this the ideal family getaway.
Sit on the lounge window seat and watch the ever changing sea and local beach life. The home and location has everything and is understandably a very popular artists scene.
The boats in the foreground, the white sand, the green cliffs falling to the sea combined with a very short walk to the shops, post office, pub, large public car park, and restaurant, making this the envy of all holiday homes!
Spend time just staring at the distant calm or in the winter months; the storms! Go rock pooling, swimming, beach-combing, walking the South West Coastal Path over the hills and cliffs with all its abundant wildlife.
From this unique holiday home, the delights of the historical crabbing and fishing village of Hope Cove reach out literally in front of the door!
From its charming thatched cottage lined square with the charming Hope & Anchor pub, to the breath-taking ‘bucket and spade’ appeal of Hope Cove beach which is a soft, sandy, sheltered bay popular for swimming and diving.
Local restaurants cater for all taste buds from Mediterranean Tapas in Kingsbridge to romantic Oyster evenings out in Bigbury.
Braising coastal walks leading both eastwards and westwards can also be enjoyed from Hope Cove and each year the annual Hope Cove festival at the end of August, attracts flocks of visitors to the seaside village for the old fashioned BBQ feasts, musical concerts & raft races amongst an away of other activities.
Hope Cove is a small village which lies nestled in the shelter of Bolt Tail and the curve of Bigbury Bay. Offering a lot of outdoor excitement, a great small beach, it is both suitable for families and couples. Like nearly all the beaches of the South Hams is recognized for its clean beaches, pubs and restaurants. It is no wonder so many people return year after year to holiday there.
Hope Cove is on the National coastal walk trail from which the small coves can be reached and the local flora and fauna & wildlife can be enjoyed.
With so many well known and not so well known towns are close by; Salcombe which is only a few minutes away and larger towns such as Plymouth, Totnes, Torbay and Exeter are all within reach and make great days out. Many of these have attractions, such as Plymouth's National Marine aquarium, Dartmoor''s national park, Torbay's Kent''s Cavern, Paignton Zoo and much more.
There are many golf courses, the closest being Thurlestone, Bigbury and Dartmouth Golf Courses. Or perhaps launch your dingy or speedboat from the slip way at Inner Hope or go fishing from the beach or rocks.
Review by Ian from Frome: "Fantastic, unfussy, proper sea side home. Cannot fault the location or the house. Accomadated six of us easily. Great pub along the road. Stunning views fro m most of the windows. There is a little damp in property but hey its virtually on the beach and 150+ years old. The house has character and has clearly been loved by its owners. My wife, daughters and partners all loved it. What more can i say."
The property is lovely and clean, and the lounge is amazing to sit in and enjoy the sea. We took two dogs, and there was a slight drawback in that we werent told no dogs upstairs, and the living room is upstairs, so had to go out and buy some cheap bedding for them as one is 14 years old and cant do solid floors these days. There is a great pub, cafe and general shop ding good icecream a short walk away - even in the sweltering heat you can easily get home before it starts to drip! All in all highly recommended, but wont be going back with the digs as ours are too pampered and need sofas to sleep on!
Additional activities & attractions include:
Conservation area, Exceptional sunrises & sunsets, Exceptional views, Gallery, National Trust properties, Nature reserve, On beach, Restaurants & bars, Surfing/body boarding, Walkway to water and Wildlife viewing.
The area is also popular for mountain biking, bird watching, fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing, wind surfing and snorkelling. The village of Hope Cove is also of historical interest having witnessed over 30 ship wrecks in its time including that of the ‘San Pedro’ in 1588, a foreign galleon ship wrecked during the botched Spanish Armada’s attempt to invade.
Historically, the village falls into two parts ~ Outer Hope & Inner Hope. Both parts of the village originally developed as centres for the local fishing industry.
Hope Cove has a long and fascinating history ~ once a favourite haunt for smugglers and for plundering wrecked ships, it is now a charming holiday destination.
Hope Cove was the only place in England where Spaniards came ashore during the reign of Queen Elisabeth I. St. Peter the Great, one of the ships of the Spanish Armada was wrecked on the Shippen Rock in 1588. A number of buildings in the South Devon area incorporate old beams salvaged from the wreckage of the Armada.
