About this property

Pointed Fir Cove: Stunning Ocean Front Maine Retreat for Discerning Vacationers!

This is vintage Maine – a grey shingled cottage, surrounded by fir trees, perched on the ocean’s edge with boundless ocean, coast and distant island views. You’ll hear no sound other than the crashing surf, sea gulls and circling ospreys. The sun rises majestically each morning, flooding the rocky coves with vibrant reds, oranges and yellows that merge to daylight and signal the coming of lobster men pulling their traps. Enjoy sightings of marine life, wild turkeys, deer, fox and our resident osprey with annual new baby chicks. Like Maine itself, life at Pointed Fir Cove is the way life should be…

This private 7 ½ acre oceanfront estate provides 180 degree open ocean views and is the perfect base for sailors, boaters, nature enthusiasts and families escaping daily stress. In addition to the amazing ocean and coastal views, a perennial fresh water stream empties into the ocean from one of our private coves. Depending on the season, rain and Spring snow melt, the cove can be a gentle running stream or a small waterfall emptying into the ocean. While privacy abounds, you’re within two miles of the East Boothbay General Store and two great restaurants and just 5 miles to the charming sites and activities of downtown Boothbay Harbor and a large grocery supermarket. The property offers a 4 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath main house and a 2 bedroom, 1 bath guest cottage. A large rock formation and trees between the two properties offers privacy to each property. Enjoy amazing rocky coast, ever changing open ocean and island views from nearly every room!

Enhancements and continued property renovations include a much expanded deck adjoining the Guest Cottage and additional exterior Adirondack seating. A host of enhancements at the ocean front estate home include new exterior stone patios to enhance outside dining and gatherings around the gas operated fire pit area plus ample exterior seating. Inside renovations include space and window expansions to the twin bedroom and to a new second floor expanded hallway and new sitting room with book cases, comfortable seating and an art gallery.

The main home has 3.5 total bathrooms, including a new second floor glamour bathroom with radiant heat designer tile flooring, elegant dual vanities, a romantic soaking tub and a separate walk-in shower overlooking the ocean!. The second floor additions also include a new comfortable sitting room and completely refinished wide plank pine wood floors on the second floor. New and prior guests will love the additions!

A 30' tall flag pole was added at oceanside, the main home entry patio was expanded and a new microwave oven and new refrigerator were added to the main home. Many small upgrades were also made to the guest home. The windows at both properties were professionally cleaned.

Both properties are furnished with every amenity, including chef’s kitchens and formal and informal dining and living spaces. The décor is New England prep, featuring quality and comfortable furnishings with clean lines that merge modern with classic. You’ll feel at home in our coastal blue rooms punctuated with blue and white porcelains reminiscent of treasures brought home by New England sea captains. The inside to outside views become difficult to distinguish as home and cottage blue paint hues and white trim paint mimics the sea and sky. The flooring throughout is charming wide board honey pine.

The first floor features a large eat in kitchen, decorated beautifully in blue and white, with pops of Chinese red. There is a central island, with stools for those who want to keep the cook company and enjoy the bounty of the built in wine refrigerator. Handmade tiles define the counter edges and a stainless steel counter aids in easy clean up. Appliances are top notch and the oven and burners are gas fueled. The amazing picture windows bring the outdoors in and offer perfect ventilation. There is ample storage cabinetry as well as a large in kitchen lighted pantry and built-in trash and recycling bins. A wall mounted TV allows you to watch morning news, cooking shows, not miss a favorite sporting event or watch a movie with the built-in DVD player.

The living room features four oversize picture windows which provide uninterrupted vistas to the bold ocean. The sun cheerfully warms the entire space and you can watch the tides come and go as working lobster boats, sight seeing watercraft and wind driven sail boats float across the horizons. There is also a cozy captain’s den, featuring a collection of antique nautical art, a space to just escape and perfect for reading your novel, evening cocktails or watching a film. A new 55" wall mounted smart TV allows cable and internet access to your favorite shows, news and films. There are books to read in the den as well as a film library.

The ground floor master bedroom features a newly remodeled ensuite bath and custom California style walk-in closet. The king bed centered on a triple framed bay window overlooks the open ocean and rocky coastline. The amazing sunrise can be viewed each morning through those windows. A luxury blue and white hooked rug warms the floors and customized bedding is provided. There is a cozy sitting area within the bedroom that invites taking a brief rest and perhaps reading your favorite novel. A new wall mounted 39" smart TV allows cable and internet access to your favorite shows, news and films.

Upstairs features three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The new spa like bath is charming and spacious and has a marble tile heated floor. There is a sweet twin bedroom, nestled under the eaves, featuring luxury linens and a bird’s eye view of the osprey’s favorite fir tree. A new double window installed in 2020 expands the bountiful ocean views.

An upstairs sitting room was added that directly connects to two bathrooms. Enjoy a spot to escape the first floor activities and enjoy the small art gallery while settling down to a favorite book, quiet conversation or a glass of wine. One queen bedroom has an antique pineapple four poster bed and amazing vistas from the now double set of windows. The second ocean front bedroom provides a queen size cherry sleigh bed, covered in a neutral palette of soft beige linens. Both queen rooms provide new wall mounted smart TV's with movie access.

The home provides a gas grill, outside furniture and a romantic oceanfront gas fire pit, perfect for toasting in the cool Maine evenings. Whole home features include: efficient and cool LED lighting , recessed, accent and architectural lighting, custom light fixtures, exterior security lighting, decorator paints and trim, privacy blinds and designer drapes and window accents. Upscale antiques, art work and furnishings are found throughout the home as well as completely remodeled bathrooms and kitchen, and many more custom design elements. The main home is connected to a "Whole House" back up generator system assuring that power is never lost at that home.

The yard and gardens are professionally maintained by a local landscaping firm. A professional property manager is employed to insure that your expectations are met on an on going basis.

Across from the main house is a two bedroom, one bath guest cottage (sleeps 4 guests) with a full kitchen and separate living and dining areas. It is newly painted and upgraded throughout and includes a hugely expanded scenic deck. It features two bedrooms each with queen beds. The larger bedroom features a four poster canopied mahogany bed. The living and dining areas open to a deck that looks out over a private oceanfront cove and a grassy green area perfect for family play, picnics, reading a book, or catching a quick nap. Furnished in a modern Americana motif, the living and dining areas are full of natural light and offer unobstructed views to open ocean, a private cove and charming islands. The kitchen is fully equipped and features new and upgraded stainless steel appliances. The cottage is located above a three car garage. A new full size washer and dryer can be found in the below garage area. The home is accessed via a private entrance/foyer or via deck stairs. The staircase entrances may present an obstacle to some handicapped persons.

The main home and guest cottage offer internet, separate land phone lines and cable TV. Four smart TV's may be found in the main home. A TV with VCR and CD player are in the guest cottage.

Pointed Fir Cove is available for Weekly, Monthly or Seasonal Rental. The two properties accommodate up to 12 total guests.

For guests wanting to separately rent the main home (VRBO # 1351990, sleeps up to 8) or the oceanfront guest cottage (VRBO # 1351593, sleeps up to 4) that information, available dates and rates can be determined separately via the above VRBO contact information. Four or more day shorter term rentals may be available for non prime season rentals only (call for details). The property is also available for guests attending the November and December Garden's Aglow festivities. The Christmas season holiday activities in Boothbay Harbor are truly magical!

Beautiful site
The house is scrupulously clean, light, spacious, well-equipped. None of us woke each other up! There were plenty of bathrooms. The view from the livingroom is spectacular. The opsreys in the tree next to the house are excellent parents.

The view is everything!
We very much enjoyed our week-long stay at Pointed Fir Cove. There was plenty of room for our three generations of family of 10 to spread out. Everyone loved the gorgeous views, watching the pair of Osprey tend their nest and feed their young, the lobster boats checking on their traps and the passing sailboats in the distance. The house is very well maintained and fully equipped with everything to cook and serve family meals. We also enjoyed putting together a puzzle on a rainy day. The drawback preventing an overall 5-star rating was the amount of housework requested including making beds upon arrival and a long cleaning checklist upon checkout. This was the most we’ve encountered in many stays at comparable VRBO properties (both in cost and size). Also, it was hard to imagine that this was our “home-away-from-home” for the week due to the many personal photos and collectibles that filled the home and guest house. Some may find it cozy, but we felt like we were staying in someone’s primary residence filled with their personal treasures. All in all we had a very enjoyable stay, made wonderful family memories and explored a new area very different from our home state of Colorado!

Great time despite foggy weather and little sun.
Excellent. However we do have suggestions for improvement and what went right and what went wrong. Example two keys for cottage didn’t work (1) in lock.

This is such an awesome place in such an awesome location. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. The privacy of the property and being right on the water was absolutely dreamy. Beaches, quaint towns and interesting activities are just a short drive away. I could come back every year!

Owning Pointed Fir Cove is the realization of a lifelong dream. We live year round in Raleigh NC, where we raised our three daughters, Emily, Laura and Sasha. Geri a native New Englander, has been coming to Boothbay since she was a child. As a couple, Bill and Geri have been vacationing in the Boothbay area throughout their 35 years of marriage. We have especially enjoyed sharing this special locale with our daughters and extended family.

When our oldest daughter, Emily, was married here in 2015, we renewed our commitment to buy our dream vacation/retirement property. We searched for the perfect home for years and were thrilled to find a property that meets all our wants. It’s a private retreat on God’s own acre. There’s not a finer ocean view to be had, and the house and cottage are welcoming and comfortable. It’s everything we’ve worked for and dreamed about and it will be our legacy to our children. We’ve traveled the world, and there is no place that speaks so strongly to us.

We trust you will treasure your time here as much as we do. Please honor our dream by taking good care of the home and our possessions. It took us years to pull it all together and with your help, we’ll enjoy it for years to come.

Why they chose this property

Why Maine and Why this Property?

Well, there’s lobster, blueberries, lighthouses, seals, artists and potters, unlimited ocean and bay views, a rocky coastline plus untouched lakes and streams and farms. And then there’s what’s not in Maine. No crowds, little crime, no billboards, and no pollution. It really is “life as it should be”!

When we began to finally search in earnest (not just drive by drooling!) for our dream home, we looked at several seaside towns in the Mid-Coast. While we always loved the greater Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor areas, we wanted to be sure we were not missing anything within an hours drive of that location. After all, we had waited a long time to do this right! We looked as far South as the Portland area and as far North as Camden, Rockport and Rockland. We ruled out other more Northerly or Easterly seaside villages based on the driving time from the Portland airport and keeping in mind that we really wanted easy access to explore and get out to special one of a kind shopping venues, a range of excellent restaurants (and sometimes just Pizza), hiking and sight-seeing, bird watching, proximity to entertainment and local culture to include: museums, music and theatre events, botanical gardens and tennis, golf and immediate access to water sports for our friends and guests. It seemed the more we looked, the more we kept coming back to the Boothbay Harbor area It offers close access to everything we want or need.

Freeport, home of the famed L.L. Bean Store, outlet shopping and great restaurants is less than an hour away. Kennebunkport, home to George and Barbara Bush, is about one hour’s drive. Portland, Yarmouth and Casco Bay are just over an hour away. Portland is now known to be a “foodie town” with many excellent restaurants, renown chefs, great museums and nightlife. Bar Harbor and the famed Acadia National Park are less than three hours north of Boothbay.

We encourage you to enjoy and experience all that Maine has to offer!

What makes this property unique

Unique Benefits of This Home and Location:

We love to explore local towns, harbors and seek out things to do. Boothbay offers access to one of a kind shopping, a range of excellent restaurants including seaside dining, excellent golf and tennis, local theatre and concert events, boating and sightseeing harbor tours, sailing adventures and access to a world class Botanical Garden with events throughout the year. Fun activities for the kids include: sailing lessons and regattas at the local Boothbay Yacht Club, visits to the Maine State Aquarium with “Touch Tanks”, information about lobsters and lobstering. At the Aquarium, kids can compare their height to that of a 27 pound lobster! The lobster is oftentimes bigger! The nearby Boothbay Railway Village offers rides on an authentic steam driven train with events year round for kids of all ages!

Boothbay is a four season town: watch the world open up in spring and enjoy getting back on the water after a long winter; see the town expand with activity, excitement and people throughout the summer; slow down and savor perfect autumn weather and the color of changing leaves across the coastal towns. For hikers, the Boothbay Land Trust offers 30+ miles of pet friendly trails! Or just enjoy a perfect retreat and nestle in with a fireplace and book as winter claims the town.

For those who like to explore, many seaside villages are a mere 20 to 60 minutes away. Enjoy great vistas, restaurants and antiquing with a short ride to Wiscasset Village (“Prettiest Village in Maine”) and Camden. Camden also features the annual Windjammer Festival which includes music, fireworks, vintage sailboat viewings and other special events. Other favorite locales include Rockport and Rockland that offer beautiful harbors and renowned restaurants, bars and museums. Damariscotta and Bristol, ME are a 20 minute drive and are on the way to visit the historical Pemaquid Lighthouse overlooking Monhegan Island.

So much to do and treasure!
