About the property

An attractive, grey stone building, originally stables and outhouses for the early 18th century Westcove House, overlooking the Kenmare estuary on the southern tip of the beautiful ring of Kerry. The Stables was converted in the 1960s and its facilities have been regularly updated over the years. All main bedrooms have a view of the sea and the hills of West Cork beyond. It sleeps up to 11 and provides an ideal annex to Westcove House, making a perfect venue for extended family re-unions, being very suitable for children. There is comfortable sitting room with open fire. Facilities also include wifi throughout. The well equipped kitchen has a dining table seating 10 and a spacious play area. A large games/party room, artist studio and a sauna/exercise area are facilities situated in The Stables building (which are shared with the house when let separately) and also approachable from the outside. There is a patio with garden furniture with good views over the Kenmare estuary. The games room is also ideal for holding talks, classes, activities & demonstrations for a wide variety of interest groups. Art groups delight in our north-facing studio, while walking groups can revive weary muscles in our sauna after a day’s rambling. A large lawn with swings is perfect for children or playing games, or even erecting a marquee for a party/small wedding. We also have a rowing boat available at guests own risk.

Our location is fantastic for outdoor pursuits from cycling to fishing, sailing to walking. Golf courses in our area are among the best in the world and within an hours drive you will find several top class facilities making Westcove also an ideal base for golfers.

PLEASE NOTE… We are usually reluctant to let the Stables on its own between May and October until we are sure it is not needed as an annex to Westcove House (1213179) and/or Garden Cottage (1213184) which together make a very popular venue for extended family get-togethers and other reunions - See Westcove Lettings (439174). However, do check the calendar and contact me as this restriction does not always apply – when we ourselves are staying at Westcove House for instance, the Stables is often available on its own – and we very seldom use the games room!

About Susannah Adlington

My name is Susannah Adlington and I am a portrait artist living in Hampshire, England with my husband Michael. My father’s family have had Irish connections for several hundred years, and my parents bought Westcove House in the early 60s after coming across a 'for sale' sign whilst holidaying in the area. It was love at first sight and since then four generations of our family have been enjoying holidays here – we just love the place and feel sure that you would too. Indeed many of our guests return to Westcove time and time again – something which we view as the highest form of praise!

Why Susannah Adlington chose Caherdaniel

'The Stables' was literally the barn/stable building which came with Westcove House when we purchased the property in 1962. We restored and converted the building in the 1960's and it had been continuously updated over the years to meet modern standards whilst all the time retaining its character and charm. The open-plan kitchen/dining area is airy and spacious and all of the upstairs bedrooms have lovely seaviews.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The Stables has a large games room with table tennis, table football, darts board etc.that can be stored away and the room turned into a party room for celebrations, Irish dance & music evenings or even meetings,classes or demonstrations. There is a small exercise room and sauna and a studio with northern light that is perfect for artists. These facilities are shared with guests of Westcove House if The Stables is rented separately.

“Just a great place to be.”

We rented this property for a week in September 2012 for an extended family holiday. Our group was made up of one senior, 2 couples, 1 older teen, and 2 middle-aged women. The cottage allowed everyone enough space to find peace and quiet if they wanted it, and room enough when we came together for meals and chats. There is not a bad thing I can say about our stay. We met the owners who were super friendly and helpful, as were two locals who also help with looking after the property. The bakery next door is great - order your breakfast croissants the evening before and pick them up freshly made the next morning. All the facilities are excellent - kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and a good games room (the table football was popular!). The location is fantastic, but you will need a car unless you are going for complete seclusion. The drive from Kerry airport will take longer than you expect, because the passengers will be looking at the scenery and the driver will be trying to concentrate on the twists and turns! Would highly recommend it if you want to get away from it all and discover a slower pace of life.

Although in-house catering is usually only available when 'The Stables' is rented with Westcove House, there is always a selection of delicious home-made dishes, prepared by our cook, available from our freezer for guests to heat through themselves...

Perfect size, Great location

Perfects spot on the ring on Kerry. The older cottage was just as advertised. Unique and interesting. The host has great. Never any issues.

Charming accomodation in fantastic location

We had a fantastic time at Westcove Stables last week of May 2015 and it is very likely we will return in next couple of years. Accommodation was just what we needed for an extended family get together of 3 generations. The games room and garden were particularly appreciated by the kids (aged 4-11). Location was perfect with beautiful views of the bay. We found so much to do in the area and the weather was very kind to us. The local Derrynane beach and park was a highlight and remarkably quiet at this time of year. We enjoyed exploring Killarney national park and more widely across the Ivereagh peninsular including hiking up Ireland's highest mountains in the spectacular Magillicuddy's Reeks.

There is plenty to see and do within 15 minutes drive of Westcove:-

Visit Derrynane House , ancestral home of one of Ireland’s leading historical figures, Daniel O’Connell known as 'The Liberator'. A 19th century politician, Daniel championed the cause of the Irish in the British parliament and succeeded in achieving Catholic Emancipation, his house, surrounded by beautiful sub-tropical gardens is open to the public daily in the summer., and weekends all year round.... the lovely tea-rooms have an irresistible selection of home-made cakes! The house overlooks Derrynane bay, with it's spectacular dunes - great for dog walking and horseback riding and one of the loveliest sandy beaches in Ireland, where there is an excellent watersports centre in summer - with many facilities for all ages.

In Caherdaniel stop for a Guinness at Freddy’s – a traditional local pub, - or go to The Blind Piper, a younger atmosphere with excellent, home-cooked food and live music on Thursday evenings. In summer, there’s a bustling market in the Community Centre on Friday mornings with lots of local produce and crafts.

The largest and arguably the best example of a pre-Christian ring fort in Ireland, Staigue Fort is about 3 miles above Castlecove, less than 15 minutes drive away. ...well worth a visit, especially on a clear day, when the views out over the Atlantic are breathtaking.

Follow the Ring of Kerry clockwise to the West and explore Waterville with its famous sea trout lake and great restaurants. Take the Skellig Ring - one of the most scenic routes along the 'Wild Atlantic Way' - to Port Magee , cross the bridge over to Valencia Island with its many tourist attractions.

A boat trip to Skellig Islands - famous as a location in the 2 latest Star War films, is a must! On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock you will find perfectly preserved beehive huts, part of a 6th century monastic settlement. On the spectacular Small Skellig 23,000 pairs of gannets nest on every available ledge making it the second largest gannet colony in the world.

Kerry is a paradise for walkers. Stroll along the beautiful beaches and dunes of Derrynane or venture up into the hills and follow the well signed 'Kerry Way'.

40 minutes drive east along the north coast of the beautiful Kenmare Estuary, is the picturesque town of Kenmare, well-known for its many tempting shops and excellent bars and restaurants. On Wednesdays there is a lively market all year round selling everything from crafts and jewellery to a mouth-watering selection of cheeses, pates and other home-made delicacies!

Drive south from Kenmare over spectacular mountain passes, to explore the Beara Peninsula which has so much to offer visitors, including the imposing stately home, Bantry House, the Sculpture Park and many beautiful gardens ...

The one hour drive to Killarney is probably the most scenic in Ireland - a winding road with magnificent views over its famous lakes and mountains. The town itself is now overly popular, teeming with tourists, huge hotels and souvenir shops, however it's well worth visiting Muckross House and Gardens and the 15th century Muckross Abbey on the lakes shortly before Killarney.

Wherever you are in Kerry you will find excellent and varied restaurants offering delicious seafood & quality local produce. The convivial atmosphere of the Irish pub is legendary and most serve great value home-cooked food. The whole family can be assured of a very warm welcome. Kerry people are known for their wit... you will be drawn into conversation with the locals .... so enjoy making new friends, the 'craic' (fun) & stories ..and more stories!! Don't forget to catch a live music session one evening!

Westcove makes an ideal base for golfers wishing to play the legendary courses of the ‘Kingdom of Kerry'. Use your own transport or a local minibus can be arranged to take you to any of the following courses – check their websites for details:

Within 25 mins drive – WATERVILLE – – magnificent links course (always rated one of the top 10 in Ireland) – a must for serious golfers. PARKNASILLA – - just east of Sneem – very scenic 12 hole course – fun for all the family.

Within 45 mins drive – RING OF KERRY – – 18 holes with panoramic views over Kenmare Estuary – take a buggy unless you are a mountain goat! KENMARE – – the first 9 holes of beautifully kept parkland are followed by a hillier 2nd 9 – good value for money and an excuse to visit this ‘shopper’s paradise’.

About 1¼ hours drive DOOKS – – a classic links with stunning views over to the Dingle Peninsular. KILLARNEY - - 3 courses on the legendary lakes.

PLEASE NOTE - Owner's Cancellation Policy

The deposit paid on booking is non-refundable unless either of the following applies:

a) If the owner is able to re-let the property/properties for the full rental of the booking, the deposit will be returned less an administration charge of 10% of the full rental.
b) If the client re-books the same property/properties within the following 12 months at the time of cancellation, the deposit can be carried over less an administration fee of 8% of the full rental - to cover the costs involved in re-marketing and, hopefully, re-booking the property/properties for the same period.

If the booking is cancelled after the full balance has been paid, i.e. six/eight weeks prior to the commencement date, the full sum shall be forfeited. However, as a concession, if the owner is able to re-let the property/properties for the full period of the booking the sum paid for the rental will be returned less a 10% administration charge.

Any cancellation made by the client for whatever reason must be confirmed by email.
