About Joan and Rick Shaw
We've lived on Kauai for almost 40 years, and our grandchildren represent the 5th generation raised on the island. Rick's grandparents came to Kauai in the early 1920's; his grandfather was a civil engineer in the sugar plantation industry. We've traveled the world, but can't imagine living anywhere else. Rick is part-owner of Makai Properties, a local real estate company, and I am a long-time educator.
Joan and Rick Shaw purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Joan and Rick Shaw chose Poipu
Some of Rick's fondest memories include learning to swim, body surf, and surf at Brennecke Beach and Poipu Beach. We have classic photos of his mother swimming there in the early 1930's. Our own daughters spent their childhoods on these shores. We were thrilled to find this little house for sale in 2016, as we could see the potential for a perfect vacation home. We spent the last ten months renovating it, and adding all the special touches we would want in our own home.
What makes this Cottage unique
The minute you kick off your shoes and enter Coco Cottage, you will feel yourself unwind and relax. With the French Doors open to the trade winds, ceiling fans gently turning, birds chirping outside, and the beach just steps away - you'll be in instant vacation mode. The kitchen offers everything you'll need to make a casual snack or turn out a gourmet meal. The king-size beds are brand new and comfy, and plantation shutters ensure a good night's sleep. The bathrooms are spacious and inviting, and the closets provide plenty of room for your belongings (bathing suit and shorts!). You can enjoy breakfast on the lanai, a run along the coastline, or a sunset picnic at the beach pavilion. We invite you to come, stay, and build special memories of your stay on Kauai.

Relaxing vacation, just add you!
Relax in paradise in very clean and comfortable cottage. These owners have though of everything. From the dedicated flood light in the yard to allow night time BBQ to the retractable screen doors to the wonderful back deck. Check the pantry before you go shopping. We found perfectly usable cooking oil, basic spices in very clean cabinets. There is a rice cooker and we took advantage of all the great Poke from the nearby markets. Finally found a vacation rental with great knives! Plenty of dishware including unbreakable sets for our toddler. Great sand toys for us to borrow and beach gear for us to enjoy the great kid's beach just a short walk around the corner. Bring your water bottles, there is a cold filtered water tap in the fridge.
There is some ongoing construction right next door that we were surprised to see but actually not that bothersome. The local roosters can be louder!
Mahalo for the positive review! We’re so happy your family enjoyed your time on Kaua’i and that you found the cottage comfortable and well equipped. It was fun meeting you at Po’ipu Beach Park - your little guy looked happy as a clam. 🐠 Thanks for your feedback about the new house going up next door. We’ve seen the plans and the finished house and landscaping promise to enhance the area. We look forward to its completion. Come back soon!
Home away from Home
With a last minute crisis in another rental lucky to find this place bc they had last min cancellation. They were awesome in helping and it’s so cozy did less eating it bc loved cooking in kitchen after walking down street for sunset. Same w bfast. My twin & I celebrated our 40th bday bfast of quiet backyard patio. Beds were comfy hadn’t slept in awhile since my cancer returned and this was also last hurrah trip. So quiet we never heard our mom get up. Quiet street and safe neighborhood. The Shaw’s were always avail when need. Wished we could of stayed a few more days but already there a week. Internet was high speed thank god bc my sis had her business to still monitor. No AC but ceiling fans and cross breeze when doors open w screen was perfect bc mom & me with our hot flashes. Loving gift basket when arrived. Also we had left over food and spices etc left for next guest. MAHALO for making our trip so memorable. Regards - Hoffman Ladies
Thank you, Hoffman Ladies!
A superb stay in an extremely well equipped and well located property. The owners, Joan and Rick, have created an incredibly welcoming property, really anticipating almost everything that travellers could need. The property itself seems recently constructed, and has been finished to a very high standard. Ideally located for the nearby Poipu beach and other nearby beaches, and also from which to explore the rest of this fabulous island. Communication with Joan and Rick was excellent throughout. Highly recommended.
Thank you very much for your positive comments. We loved having guests all the way from London and are happy to hear that you enjoyed the cottage and all that Kaua’i has to offer. Our best to you and Maria.
What a cozy, well-stocked cottage in a wonderful location! Our family of 4 stayed here 6 nights and fell in love with this cute cottage. We were a short stroll from Brennecke's Beach (which our teenage boys loved because of the waves) and Poipu Beach (which has calmer swimming water). It was amazing to see turtles and monk seals sunning themselves on the beach each day. Great shopping and restaurants were a very short drive away. The cottage had everything you needed to enjoy the outdoors - spacious lanai, gas BBQ, 6 large beach towels, beach chairs, umbrella, coolers and outdoor hoses to wash off the sand. It was spotless and well-stocked inside so you felt right at home - plenty of bath towels, hand and shower soap, detergent and softener for the modern washer and dryer, large modern fridge and gas stove, plenty of kitchen plates, glasses and utensils, condiments, spices and a wonderful welcome gift of Kauai coffee, macadamia nuts and a box of cookies from Kauai Kookie. Rick and Joan were gracious hosts who made us feel comfortable and touched base with us regularly during the threat of Hurricane Lane. We had an absolute wonderful time and hope to visit again! Mahalo!
We would absolutely love for your family to return. You were so accommodating with Hurricane Lane lurking nearby - I think your positive attitude kept the storm at bay! Thank you for taking such great care of our property. Aloha and a hui hou (until we meet again.
Better than we could have ever asked for!
What a beautiful property in a wonderful location close to the beach. Joan and Rick have done a lovely job creating a cozy and homey space for visitors. Joan was also very attentive and each to reach for any questions we had. Our group could not have asked for a better experience and we can't wait to return for another visit! Mahalo!
It was an absolute pleasure to host you. You are welcome back anytime. So glad the weather cooperated!
Beautiful Cottage, Great Location
My husband, myself and my 2 young adult sons stayed here for a few days at the beginning of August. The cottage is completely and beautifully updated/renovated. Many ceiling fans and great air flow. We loved the back patio in the evenings after coming back from watching the sunset. The location is within walking distance of Brennecke and Poipu Beaches. We ended up driving and parking because we visited other beaches first each day. We enjoyed snorkeling near the Beach House Restaurant. Snorkeling at Poipu Beach was too difficult during our stay due to currents/waves. Our boys took surf lessons with Kauai Surf School at the beach in front of the Sheraton. Shipwreck beach is also worth a visit. There is a wonderful cliff top hiking path that is easy to access here. Take a 2 minute walk to the end of the block to watch the sunset. Just beautiful. There is some construction next to the cottage at the moment but a privacy screen is in place and the men arrived at a reasonable time and were gone by mid to late afternoon. You will only notice them if you try to take an afternoon nap. We contacted Joan a couple times during our stay and she always responded promptly. Very nice to deal with. The cottage does not have a beach view if that is important to you. We chose the cottage over a nearby condo that had a magnificent view. I debated the importance of the view and in the end we picked the cottage. We were not disappointed. We enjoyed the privacy and parking right out front, not to mention the pristine condition of the cottage itself. You would not be disappointed staying here. BTW, my boys refused to sleep in the same bed, haha, even though both bedrooms had a huge king. One son slept on the couch in the living room and claims he was quite comfortable.
Mahalo for taking the time to write such a thorough review. We loved having you as guests and hope you return soon. Special thanks for alerting us about the Kindle left behind by a previous guest. It ended up belonging to a Kaua’i resident who works just down the street from the cottage and he was most grateful to have it back. Aloha and a hui hou (until we meet again).
Coco Cottage at Poipu Beach is located just four homes from the ocean and seven homes away from the Poipu Beach Park, which is the hub of activity in Poipu. Everyone coming to Poipu wants to be within easy walking distance of Poipu Beach and Brennecke's Bodysurfing Beach. All other popular, non-ocean/beach activities, shopping and restaurants are are within a 5-minute drive of our cottage. If you love the beach at Poipu, you will love our convenient location!
