Our stay on the catamaran Shadow exceeded all expectations. Captain Robin helped us with many arrangements before and during the stay and made sure that we had a perfect vacation.

9 day sail Christmas St. Lucia and Martinique
We cannot say enough how patient and kind Robyn was with our family and grandchild. He helped us with grocery shopping, some meals which were fantastic and just a relaxing vacation. We headed to Martinique the first day for grocery shopping as they have a better selection than St. Lucia.. Robyn checked us in and out of customs so we could play instead of waste time in customs line. Our main goal of vacation was to relax and snorkel. Robyn took us to every calm snorkeling cove in our route. We were able to swim with a few turtles, see Lion fish, puffer fish, porcupine fish, huge eels and just beautiful fish galore. I think our destinations were St. Anne, Le Marin, Le Trois Ilet, Le Anses de Arlet and a few more hot spots. We went into the island for a few dinners which were great and then on other days Robyn joined in to help us cook on the boat. He made a few of his favorite dishes to go along side of other items we prepared. On our return sail, we saw several pods of pilot whales. We went in to Marigot Bay for dinner then over to Pilot point for a hike, swim and lunch in a cute place with delicious Roti. On our final night, Robyn was able to secure us fresh lobster which were massive and delicious. He taught our kids how to properly prepare and cook the lobster on his barbecue grill on the boat. I truly cannot say enough as to how professional but fun Robyn was on our trip. This was our first family vacation with our son in laws and grandchild. This trip could have gone sour as we were in very close quarters but fortunately everyone thoroughly enjoyed their sail and accommodations. And Robyn fit right in with our family. The boat was properly maintained just as you see in pictures. All in all, I would say that Captain Robyn goes OUT OF HIS WAY to take care of you while you are on board his boat. I would definitely recommend a vacation on Shadow and we have high hopes that we can return to sail with him again.

Family vacation
We loved our family vacation on this boat. Robin was a great host, taught us lots about the islands and the whole family had a wonderful time. Robin’s knowledge of sailing these inlets and snorkeling can’t be matched! The views were amazing from the boat, this is the best way to travel.

3 days in paradise
We and our two adult children had a wonderful experience aboard this lovely, comfortable catamaran ("Shadow") with congenial, skilled, and patient Captain Robin. He catered the trip to our interests, which were snorkeling, swimming, sunning, eating great French bread/cheese/salads/fish, and exploring some really quaint and beautiful villages on Martinique. My husband, in particular, was interested in renewing a previous interest in sailing, and Robin was generous in allowing him to help out and in discussing boats and sailing and technical stuff with him, while the others of us were more useful during swimming, happy hours and mealtimes :-). Each of the three cabins had its own toilet and shower, which was a nice perk. The water was drinkable and a fresh water shower was refreshing after a day in salt water. Robin arranged a meal at a nice seaside restaurant in St. Anne, Martinique, for our first night on the boat - where there just happened to be a local music festival going on - and then a great band playing later at the restaurant. We enjoyed simple and delicious meals on the boat after that. Robin was extremely easy to be with and often prepared delicious lunches while we were out snorkeling - even though that was not in his job description! The snorkeling in Martinique was superb. Robin was also nice enough to take us down the coast of St. Lucia on our last day, which was great fun to see and also got us closer to our eventual southern destination and the airport :-( We highly recommend Captain Robin and the Shadow experience - he was very responsive prior to the trip and in suggesting an itinerary which was perfect for us and our interests and time frame. Thanks, Robin!

An Amazing Experience!
We've just returned from a 5-night excursion on "Shadow" with Captain Robin, and it was absolutely wonderful. Our goal for this holiday was to "test drive" our retirement dream by experiencing the live-aboard lifestyle and also to attempt a passage between Islands, and we are so very glad we did. We sailed from St. Lucia to Martinique and back again. The scenery, the swimming and the snorkeling were excellent! Robin also took the time to introduce us to the unique cultures of both islands and we really enjoyed this aspect of our trip. Shadow is nicely equipped catamaran with plenty of living space, but it is not a luxury vessel, and so as long as you dial down your "glam" expectations, you will be as happy as a lark. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who is considering making the transition to live-aboard yachting at some point in the future. You won't regret it. Robin is a friendly, knowledgeable host and a patient teacher too!

About the host

Hosted by Robin Hobson

Host profile image
Robin has been sailing, instructing and racing for over 40 years.
He is an RYA Yachtmaster (Commercially endorsed) and has been in the Caribbean full time since 2012 following his escape from the rat race after years in managment and sales in the UK and abroad.
He has sailed extensively around the Caribbean (and elsewhere) and has been doing charters and yacht deliveries since 2013, predominantly on 42' monohull from which he upgraded in 2016.
He has 2 sons back in the UK, the eldest is an officer in the Royal Navy and the youngest is an IT professional.
Robin is fit, active and into sports and yoga.
Whilst this is a captain only charter, Robin is a good cook and is willing to help out as and when in the galley.
This is your perfect opportunity to explore and learn a lifestyle and Robin is a willing teacher if that is an objective. If your requirement is just to chill and be chauffeured from beautiful location to beautiful location then that is not an issue either and you can take advantage of Robins local knowledge.

Why they chose this property

Shadow is an FP Bahia, one of the best catamarans FP have ever made. She is of an older style (1998) which means she is less of a caravan and more of a sailing icon. Whilst slightly dated, she is better built and faster than her replacements. Originally designed for up to 12 people, we are limiting the number of guests to a maximum of 6 in 3 cabins to give more space and comfort. This translates to a lower cost for more space and you are getting an icon of a boat with personal chauffeur for less than the cost of equivalent sized bareboat.
