About Ed and Michele Shumaker

Ed and Michele Shumaker and their multi generational family of Bradenton natives are eager to share with you their love of Manatee County and all it has to offer. Ed grew up in Bradenton, graduated from a local high school and college, and spent 31 years as a Cedar Hammock Fire Captain. Michele has lived in Bradenton most of her life and together they have three grown children and lots of extended family in the area.

Why Ed and Michele Shumaker chose Bradenton

The Riverhouse Retreat was originally purchased in 1999 by Michele's parents and underwent a historically sensitive restoration. The extended family enjoyed 20 years of living on the same street while the Shumaker children grew. The Riverhouse has now been passed down and Ed and Michele still live just down the street and are available at a moment's notice to assist you while you are their guest.

What makes this house unique

All that downtown living offers within walking and biking distance-a car is not necessary. The beauty of staying in a vintage property that has been meticulously updated to include all modern amenities. The unique small town flavor of Old Florida amidst a bustling, culturally rich downtown, still close to world class beaches.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Simply put, the Riverhouse Retreat is a fantastic place to stay! The home is beautiful, clean, and located in a great part of town. Michele is a superb host. She is easy to communicate with and responds to messages promptly. She goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome-small touches like coffee and fruit in the kitchen, towels and sunscreen for the beach, and even a personalized greeting on the welcome instructions! I give the Riverhouse Retreat my highest recommendation!

Perfect location and home

  • 5 of 5

The home was perfect for our family of 9 that came in for a destination wedding. The home was beautifully decorated and newly redone. The home is very clean, all the beds and pillows were so comfortable, and there were plenty of fresh towels. They had so many nice touches to really feel like home. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this home to our friends and family!

Really nice restored house downtown Bradenton

  • 4 of 5

We were a group of six semi aged men from St Marys GA on a bicycling outing to the area.

Pretty much as described on VRBO. Really nice extra touches like a Kuerig coffee station, fresh fruit, and lots of local information. Also it was the first time that we had the hosts greet us and show us around and give us a heads up.

Nicely restored period house ; very attractively decorated.

One negative was the awkward bed/bath situation up stairs. There was a Jack and Jill bath off 2 of the bedrooms which required the folks in the third bedroom to go through one of those J and J rooms to get to the bath room upstairs.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, Peter. We are glad that your group enjoyed our Riverhouse Retreat and our vibrant downtown. It is our pleasure to add the extra touches to our historic home that make your visit a pleasure. We will continue to do just that. We are currently researching the possibility of adding a bathroom to the bunk room upstairs sometime in the future. Although this is the bedroom that many of our groups use for their children, we understand that if it had it's own bath it would be more convenient for groups of friends such as yours who are traveling together. Thanks for the input-it helps us to place this construction possibility at the top of our property improvement list for the future. Best regards, Ed and Michele

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

It was everything we hoped for and more. The owners are readily available if needed. Hanging out on the front porch in that quiet neighborhood every evening was very relaxing. We'll be back.

Spacious for Family Get Away!

  • 5 of 5

This property accommodated 8 Adults and 2 Babies perfectly. Home is comfy and inviting. We used everything provided; Pool, Bikes, Grill, Kitchen (we did a lot of cooking) was well equipped. We also took advantage of the River Walk. It's beautiful and the activities that surrounds it are so much fun. Great Restaurants close by for morning coffees, afternoon happy hours, or relaxing dinners. My favorite happy hours were spent around the Pool! Temperature is spot on and steps from the refrigerator.

Location, Location, Location so much to do without getting in a car.

We all loved it!!!
