A Medieval House Brought to Life

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a delightful week (May 27-June 3, 2017) in Casa Vasio. This 3 story, ancient house has been charmingly refurbished for the 21st Century with all modern conveniences without losing any of its historic feeling.

The medieval section of modern Vaison is exactly where you want to be, with picturesque, winding , cobble-stoned streets. The house is ideally situated for exploring this old village. And the Roman ruins (the most extensive in France) are within walking distance.

The owners of Casa Vasio go out of their way to be helpful and make your stay a wonderful experience..

I recommend their home without reservation.

We had a great week in Provence with this beautiful home as our base of operations. Incredible setting in the medieval city on the hill overlooking the modern section of Vaison la Romaine. The house is wonderfully restored, beautifully furnished and decorated, and equipped with everything you need for a wonderful vacation. The views from every window and the rooftop terrace remind you that you are in a different time and place. Wow!

Beautiful, comfortable home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Vasio immensely. The home has been lovingly restored, retaining the beautiful stone historical elements while incorporating modern conveniences and tasteful furnishings. We loved the location in the Haute-Ville in Place du Vieux Marche. Though parking in not permitted there, we were able to drive up to the front door to unload our luggage. We were met by Michelle, a gracious woman who enthusiastically showed us all through the house, explained details we would need to know and gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and cafes, the Tuesday market and the supermarket, and wineries. Convenient parking is close by. The kitchen facilities are excellent and well supplied with everything you need to make meals at home. The bed is quite comfortable. The stairs leading up to the family room / kitchen and then up to the bedroom and full bath on the floor above are stone and require some care to negotiate, which we did not find at all difficult. The Wi-Fi is good. There is a printer available. The listing description was accurate, the property clean and well-maintained and we knew we could contact Michelle with any questions or concerns. We would definitely recommend this home to relatives and friends.

Our Perfect Home in Provence!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four, including two daughters aged 12 and 10, had a fabulous stay at Casa Vasio. It was our perfect home in Provence. The home is both beautiful and historic, and has a lovely kitchen. We loved its location – on an old market square in the upper town of Vaison-la-Romaine. The town itself is wonderful, and the upper medieval town is quiet, very picturesque and has a striking castle a short stroll away from Casa Vasio. We could easily walk to a variety of very good restaurants, including an excellent one right next door. We particularly enjoyed that we encountered primarily French tourists in Vaison-la-Romaine and felt we had a true French experience. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. During our stay, we got to know a friendly local shopkeeper on the old market square and the very nice owner of a great ice cream shop up the street from the house. We also were able to walk just 500 meters down the hill to a great winery, Domaine des Roches Fortes, for a tasting. We will always have very fond memories of Casa Vasio. We truly felt at home there and highly recommend it!

Wonderful stay in beautifully decorated medieval home with modern conveniences

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely delightful! My wife and I and our three children thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this charming home. Ghislain and Leticia Gonsette have done a superb job in renovating this wonderful home in the heart of the Medieval portion of Vaison-La-Romaine. Situated on the Place du Vieux Marche, this home has a scenic view of the old square with its shops and running fountain. It is about a 15 minute walk to the shops of the newer part of the town, across the ancient Roman bridge. The house itself has large rooms, with beautiful stone walls, arches and stairs, the stairs being worn down by hundreds of years of usage. With a well appointed modern kitchen and modern bathrooms that were tastefully decorated in keeping with the rest of the house, we enjoyed the best of both worlds; savoring the historic ambiance but with all the modern conveniences. In spite of the July heat, the stone house provided a cool haven from the midday heat. It is well maintained and our hostess Michelle Paris made everything very easy for us. She was gracious and helpful even after our late arrival due to traffic on the drive from Paris, and was always available to answer any of our questions.

This home was a wonderful base from which to explore some of the many attractions that Provence has to offer: the Roman ruins and theatre within Vaison-La-Romaine, the Pont D'Avignon and Papal Palace, the Roman antiquities of the Theatre in Orange, the Colosseum in Nimes, the aqueduct at Pont de Gard. We only stayed for one week but wished that we could have stayed longer, and hope to return in the not too distant future. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful home with us!

Owner's Response: It is a reward for us that our guests appreciate so much this property. When we bought this home, first we fell in love with the surroundings of the medieval city. There was much to be done to restore the historical aspect but we had faith and we did it not in the spirit of gain but we wanted to do the things right. We wanted to offer comfort and modernity while keeping the spirit of the medieval surroundings. We love to stay in our home and we are happy to share it with guests who can appreciate. Thanks to all of you. Gil and Letty Gonsette.

Charming Medieval Home in Beautiful Town with Great Cycling Nearby

  • 5 of 5

Charming home beautifully decorated with ample space and an excellent kitchen for cooking. The location is perfect for those interested in markets, wine or cycling (Mt Ventoux and the entire Cote du Rhone). We easily obtained our keys and got an introduction to the house. We loved being in town yet in a place that was quiet in the evening.

As no home is perfect, the lack of A/C (very common in France) made it difficult to sleep during the hot summer nights (early July). The owners provide fans but the heat wave was too much for them. The Mistral was our relief for two days during our 11 night stay. Internet was slow, but again not the fault of the owners (about 750kb/sec) as this appears to be the maximum available in this area.

The terrace at the top of the house proved a relaxing spot to sip wine, read and enjoy the setting sun.

This is a LOVELY HOME and we HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to anyone to stay. It has several fireplaces so I suspect it is quite cozy in the Fall and Winter. Vaison La Romaine is a nice town big enough to shop and dine yet small enough to feel as if you are in rural France.

We hope to return as we really loved the home as did all of our friends who visited.

Thanks to the owners for allowing us to stay in their home.

Barry and Beka

Vaison La Romaine is best known for its archeological remains of the Roman era that have been discovered. But the city also had an intense feudal activity, not in the valley as the Gallo Roman period but on the rocky outcrop which is accessed by crossing the river Ouveze.

In addition to the poetry of its quiet lanes, the upper city of Vaison offers the charm of its houses, often built in antique stones that can testify to the wealth of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance provence.
