Casa Sofia is a well equipped comfortable villa with a heated pool for all year round use, and has a pool side kitchen/dining area ideal for romantic evening meals. The house, which is decorated with original works of art, is in an elevated position in a very attractive rural setting, both peaceful and secluded. From the house and pool there are amazing panoramic views of mountains across a beautiful valley, regularly visited by birds of prey. The living room has large picture windows from which guests may enjoy these views from indoors. The living room, kitchen and bedrooms are air-conditioned/heated. The terraces and the façade of the pool side building are finished in local stone. Accommodation details: there are two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fitted kitchen, lounge and dining area. Outside there are two terraces, linked by a path suitable for wheelchair users, a swimming pool and a pool side kitchen with dining facilities. The double bedded room is furnished with a queen sized bed, built-in double wardrobe, an en-suite bathroom with shower, vanity unit, and toilet, and air-conditioning/heating.

The twin bedded room is furnished with twin beds and a double wardrobe, and air-conditioning/heating. A fold-up bed is available for a 5th guest. The family bathroom has a full length bath with a shower and shower screen, a vanity unit, toilet, and bidet. The living room/dining room has large picture windows on two sides of the room, so guests may fully appreciate the views across the valley. It is tastefully furnished with two sofas, and a dining table and chairs for five persons; the TV reception includes Spanish tv, some UK satellite reception, and UK IPTV (Sky Sports & Movies etc through the internet) as an option for £1.00 per day. Guests can also watch UK internet tv, using a laptop, tablet etc. connected to the tv without charge; please ask about this. There is a small music system and an air-conditioning/heating unit to keep this area of the house at a comfortable temperature all year round, and an efficient log-burning stove is an added attraction. The kitchen is fully fitted and equipped with a full size gas hob and electric fan oven, a microwave oven, a dishwasher, a fridge-freezer, an electric kettle, a toaster, iron and ironing board. There are terraces on both sides of the house: there is extensive terracing around the swimming pool; there are hardwood garden furniture, parasols, sun-loungers, and tables and chairs; the second terrace, which is situated outside the kitchen door is equipped with a table and chairs, is a wonderful sun trap for alfresco meals to enjoy sunny weather in winter, autumn and spring. There is a wooden fence between the house and the pool area. Swimming pool: adjoining the larger terrace there is a heated swimming pool for use in all seasons. There are panoramic views of mountains from the pool side. Pool side kitchen/dining area: this building overlooks the swimming pool with mountains in the background. This spacious facility includes a fitted kitchen, a gas barbecue, an electric oven, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, dining furniture, a music system, original paintings, and wide opening doors. There are hand-crafted, natural stone pillars and terracing, with a wooden pergola with a natural coverage of grape vine to provide shade. The washing machine is located in this building. Energy saving measures:- solar panels provide domestic hot water with excellent water pressure for showering, virtually free of charge. Solar energy, an efficient electric heat pump and a thermally insulated cover ensure that the swimming pool can be heated economically for use all the year round, The combination of both an efficient wood burning stove and air-conditioning/ heating units ensures that this house can be heated efficiently for use all year round. To encourage energy saving, we have chosen to lower our rental prices, while, at the same time to charge guests for the amount of electricity consumed at the current cost price of £0.16/€0,21 per unit; the number of units used will be calculated at the end of the rental period. Paintings in the house and pool side kitchen are Nalini Cook's original works and are for sale.

From the house there are wonderful views across a beautiful valley. The area is visited by a variety of birds, including predators, and is ideal for walking, as the weather is often cooler and less humid than on the coast. The owners, Nalini and Barry Cook, live nearby. Nalini is a practising artist and teacher, and offers tuition to guests in her studio. The house is well equipped. Wifi internet is available.There is air-conditioning in the living room and bedrooms, and a wood-burning stove for the winter months. From the dining area there are brilliant views through the expanse of picture windows. The lounge is tastefully furnished with comfortable sofas, dining table and chairs for five persons, television, including UK satellite reception, and hi-fi system. Throughout the property there are many original works of art painted by Nalini Cook. Abundant hot water is supplied by solar energy. Outside there is a covered heated pool, and two terraces, linked by a path suitable for wheelchair users. Near the pool there is a large covered fully equipped pool side kitchen with dining facilities. The terracing around two sides of the pool and the façade and floor of the kitchen is finished in locally cut natural coloured stonework.

The house sleeps 4/5, as a folding Zed bed is available. All the windows have mosquito screens. Two terraces connect by a path to enable access for wheelchair users: the larger terrace surrounds the pool on three sides; the smaller located near the kitchen entrance is equipped with a table and chairs for breakfasting etc. It is a sun trap in Autumn, Winter and Spring. Sun loungers, outdoor furniture and two fixed sunshades are provided. At the back of the larger terrace there is an outdoor kitchen, dining area and traditional pergola to provide shade, with outstanding scenic views across the pool. This facility includes a fitted kitchen, gas barbecue, refrigerator, oven, microwave, plates, cutlery, dining furniture, music system, original paintings and hand-crafted natural stone mosaic floors and walls. Solar panels provide an abundant supply of domestic hot water to cut costs and pollution. The owner offers home made curries & breads, a 'taxi' service, baby-sitting, art lessons, etc.

About Barry Cook

I live contentedly with my wife, Nalini, in Santa Maria Del Cerro, near the village of Villanueva De La Concepcion. I was teaching in England, and Nalini was an HMI, when this life journey began for us townies in 1999. We bought land, a green field plot on a hillside, and decided where to site our house on the land, and what it would be like. Later we also bought two rental properties, to realise the dream of working for ourselves in our chosen environment. Without intruding on our guests' privacy, we like to impart our enthusiasm for what we value and appreciate in our life here in rural Andalucia. We try to imbibe the culture of this people, inasmuch-as a foreigner can gain an insight. For the most part we like the local people we meet for their warmth, their self-possession, and their unpretentious charm. To relax I explore the villages, towns, cities and countryside of Spain. I enjoy eating out with friends and family. We entertain our children and grandchildren here. The beauty of nature and the climate encourage, and enable us, to spend time working and relaxing outdoors. Life here, which is so different from what we were used to in England, continues to please and satisfy us: we are still “on holiday” every day. Nalini is a practising artist, who is inspired as a result of what she experiences here in Andalucia. When I visit England, I am conscious of missing what I leave behind here, such as the bright light and space – as in wide open spaces, as in enough space to park ten cars; as in having space in the day to talk to my neighbours. Here I relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of driving into the village, the first view of the Torcal a few minutes into the journey, or going round the Torcal, and later the view of the castle on the approach to Antequera. Here, I, the boy from the East End of London, know that I have come a long way, as I gaze across the swimming pool at distant mountains, but I also enjoy days out with family and friends down on the coast.

Why Barry Cook chose Antequera (Costa del Sol)

We bought Casa Sofia in March 2002; the house was completed in December 2001. There was no electricity supply, and the access dirt track was too steep in wet weather to leave the property except in a 4x4. It was just a house, with fallen earth up against its back wall. But the views were wonderful!

Casa Sofia January 2013: electricity supply installed (June 2002); a retaining wall built at the back of the house (July 2002); the access road laid with concrete (September 2002); a wood-burning stove installed(December 2002); a swimming pool built (June 2003); terracing built around the pool (May 2004) etc. Plus the views, of course.

We stayed in Casa Sofia until moving into our own house later in 2002; we soon realised Casa Sofia had the potential to be a wonderful holiday home for guests staying short and long term.They tell us they value staying at Casa Sofia not only for its facilities, its wonderful views and the privacy afforded, but also they enjoy being in the village of Villanueva De La Concepcion, walking down to Pastelero for an excellent meal to be driven back to Casa Sofia by the owner, and visiting the many places of interest within convenient travelling distance of Casa Sofia.

What makes this villa unique

We first came to the land where Casa Sofia was later to be built in April 1999, The sun was shining, and the land and surrounding hills were green and beautiful. Later in the afternoon we witnessed our first sun set from the same spot as we have seen many more since that day. What else makes Casa Sofia a special place? The aesthetic and the spiritual: Nalini's paintings on the walls; the views; the tranquillity and the seclusion. The practicalities: the property ticks most of the boxes which many guests regard as essential or desirable: private heated pool for use in all seasons; air-conditioning/heating; English free-sat TV channels; broadband internet with wifi; good access roads passable in virtually all weathers.

Villanueva De La Concepción is a lovely, friendly, safe place where guests may enjoy the lively, festive traditions of a typically vibrant Andalucian village, where there are traditional bars, restaurants, supermarkets, shops etc. El Torcal National Park, with its unique natural limestone sculptures and various walking routes, lies above Villanueva 10 minutes away by car. Beyond El Torcal the beautiful historic town of Antequera with its many ancient churches, distinctive architecture and prehistoric caves is 25 minutes away. Malaga, the Costa Del Sol resorts, Cordoba, the White Towns, Seville, Granada, El Chorro Gorge, Ronda and Gibraltar are convenient day trips by car. Other Activities: wild-life photography, green-laning. Golf: the nearest course, an 18 hole course, is Antequera Golf Club, about 25 minutes drive. Many of our guests choose to play on at least two different courses. The other courses are on the coast about an hour away. We can give guests advice and information, and make arrangements on their behalf, as we have excellent contacts locally.

Ski: Sierra Nevada resort is about 90 minutes away by car. Villanueva De La Concepción. An expat’s view:- “Why Villanueva De La Concepción? I’ve stepped back in time to when dad was a lad:- I can’t smell the Hovis baking, but I think I know nearly everyone. I can park almost anywhere I like, and leave it unlocked… A good friend hasn’t locked his front door for the last 10 years, and now can’t find his key… I went in a shop once, and Nicolas, the owner, chased me up the street, as I’d left the Serrano ham on the counter. I have owed the man in the Moto shop 10 Euros since last year… Visitors keep coming back to check us out. My daughter-in-law, and several others, keep in touch with what’s going on in “Concepcion” through Face Book. Tom, the owner of Xebar, our “English bar”, keeps them regularly informed… Last week we had our feria: it started with rock night and free beer in the bottom square. I got caught up in a parade: children wearing satirical papier-mache heads: I recognised the mayor among other local celebrities. Friday night saw the local flamenco classes performing, followed by an exceptional performance by a professional troupe. Earlier in the day the Ruta De Tapas: 13 bars and 13 tapas… As a student in the 60’s we did the King Street Run, which was a pint in all 8 pubs, and a commemorative tie for those who completed the Run… By six o’clock the streets filled with groups of cheerful inebriates, many in fancy dress: the reward nowadays is a commemorative Tee shirt… There were two bull fights: the real and the silly: the latter when our local frustrated toreadors dress up and “fight” little bulls; other local heroes rush into the arena, as stretcher bearers, or as priests to deliver the last rites… In the winter our mayor laid on rock bands, live music, in our bars… What else? There are several great places to eat and drink, including Rincon De La Villa and Bar Torfa. Our local mountain, El Torcal, is from another planet with its limestone sculptures. Antequera, our nearest big town, the safest place in Andalucia, is a heritage centre, that hosts a free Blues Festival in July: late night atmospheric blues music high above the town in Plaza Santa Maria. Our nearest city, Malaga, has it all: the Picasso Museum, excellent restaurants, tapas bars, fishing villages.”

School Of Painting: Nalini arranges and tutors painting activities, including the provision of artists' materials and equipment and the use of her studio in Casa Nueve Arcos; a light lunch is included

We can accept payment in many different currencies We can offer discounted rates for under-occupancy, and for rentals of more than two weeks. Long term rates are negotiable. Energy saving measures: we charge guests for the amount of electricity they consume at the same cost as we pay the utility company, currently £0.16/€0,21 per unit. IPTV is available & the charge is £1.00 per day, if guests use our box and service; if they use their own tablet/laptop, of course there is no charge. We usually accept pets, but we must be advised beforehand, and reserve the right to say no.

We require 20% of the rental to secure your booking and this is not refundable. On receipt of your deposit we will send you a confirmation advice. The balance of the rental is to be paid 8 weeks before arrival. Failure to settle by the due date will entitle us to treat your booking as cancelled by you. You may also ask about paying the 80% balance in cash on your arrival at Casa Sofia.
